Excellent work. The quality of that phone reminds me of ours here in the states. Built to last, always had good sound quality, and never needed repair. Thanks for another great post.

Good restoration! I believe the date may be incorrect, although ATM became ATE in 1931, they did not change the moulds they used, so their telephones still had the 'ATM' trademark on them for many years after the change of name. The transmitter (or microphone if you prefer) on the set in the video is dated 1956 and, given that the wiring is, as someone else has pointed out, PVC insulated, then 1956 seems likely to be when the set was made, certainly it is of a type being made at that time. In 1931 the wiring would have been insulated with cotton. Also, the capacitor in the centre of the set appears to be in a plastic case, in the 1930s this would have had a waxed-card or metal case. Great work though - all the best:)

Wow, you know loads of information about vintage telephones. Thank you so much for the details. I’ve just googled the ATM how long they were in business but didn’t really know the real history behind it. Later on another restoration coming up on this channel: the pair of this one, hey in under my community tab I do questioners every now and then and one of the question about this telephone was: “what sort of business or office was this telephone used for”…so what is your opinion?

@@MasterT-n2c Telephones like this could be used by any small business. I used to see them installed in shops, cinemas, solicitors offices, garages etc. Five, ten or sometimes even 15 station push-button intercoms were relatively cheap as they did not need an exchange to link them together, all the switching was done inside the phones themselves, but the number of stations (phones) was limited as each had to have a wire running to every other phone on the system as well as speaking and call wires. Only one call could take place at any one time, but could include as many stations as required. Intercoms like this were certainly a lot cheaper than renting several additional phones from the Post Office; in most countries (except the USA) at that time it was the Post Office who ran the telephone service as a state monopoly. Private companies like ATM could however sell internal telephone systems, including simple intercoms like these directly to businesses. On most private systems it was not possible to make outside calls, so the users of this particular phone could only ever call Terry, Narelle or 'No 2'! Incidentally, those labels indicate to me that this phone must indeed have been used in Australia; in the England of 1956 the labels would have been something like 'Mr Simpson' (presumably the boss) and 'Reception'' (of course perhaps 'No 2' was the shop next door or at the end of the yard that the business had expanded into🙂). I have never seen an intercom like this used in England which had first names typed on the labels! Even in the first office I worked in some 20 years later there were still those who were always 'Mr'. Incidentally, looking again at the capacitor on a bigger screen I see that in fact it does have a metal case, but the overall design is more 50's than 30's, as is the PVC insulation. I have subscribed to ensure I don't miss your next video!

Thank you for the sub and I hope you’ll enjoy your stay. I also posted your comments under the community tab for others to read and learn. I do all kind of different things not just telephones but you may find some of my videos interesting. I try to separate them in different “playlists” to avoid confusion. 🙂 @@conradharcourt8263

Thank you so much for posting this video! You did an awesome job restoring this. This phone is the closest ive seen to the phone I have in terms of age. I want to rig it up so guests can pick up the handset and listen to a recorded conversation. What tool are you using to get the mouthpiece off? Also, do you think it is possible to rewire something through the handset (to the earpiece)? Not quite sure how to get in there without damaging it. Thanks

Wow, great idea and it is doable, to remove the mouth piece you just have to use a pin that fits trough the hole. 👍🙂
