hi Father Phil. I miss the lovely change of engine note when the large levers pulled the belts in gear. Or the grunt as the engine almost died bringing lumps through it. But don't miss the the lack of dust protection¬. Dad had an airflow helmet to keep the dust out!

Love a good vintage combine video. Neighbours of mine have a New Holland 1545, has never left the Parish since new. Bought in Spa Garage in Mallow in about 1974. Parked up now after last owner died suddenly but would love to see it going, many happy hours spent as a passenger & driver on it. Coincidentally, original owner has outlived the 2 subsequent owners!

Hi to you all. Really interesting stuff. 1965, we bought a S/H 780s, to cut some eighty acres of barley when I was farming in North Devon. I know that I could climb those steps and drive it right away now. It all came back to me ! The reg. on your 788, KDV is a proper Devon registration, as it’s an F it would have been registered in August 67. Oh it brought it all back, the dust the rattles and no guards anywhere !Good stuff, keep it up. Thanks C

I have one for Father Phil, I’m one year younger than him, we also had a 788 and as a 4 year old I also sat on the the tool box behind the driver seat, however, and I don’t recommend this, as a 4 year old in 1975 we were cutting one day, my father was standing up and leaning over to his right hand side when I got up and went to get off as we were going along cutting. Holding on to the handrail I missed the step and swung down in front of the wheel and the combine ran right over me! Cracked my pelvis. Had a fairly new trousers on me which we didn’t get too many of in those days and I remember being most upset about a nurse in a and e cutting it from top to bottom with a scissors!

In the good old suffix registration days a vehicle could be registered as 'new' even though it could be several years old so the E plate (Jan - July 1967) only indicates when it was registered, not the age of the vehicle when registered. I'd definitely say the 788 is older.

Hi farmer Phil. This is Linda's husband. Does father Phil know the trick of cracking an egg into the radiator. You crack an egg into the radiator and the egg goes to the spot that's leaking and seals it. It might take more than one egg. I seen my uncle do it back in the eighties with a Ferguson tea 20. He put four eggs into radiator and that sealed her for the day. We drew turf all day after that. Never leaked a drop of water all day.
