What is that contraption that you picked up? Don’t regret any sales of gym equipment. What I do regret is not making some purchases I had the chance to before the Covid home gym price hikes.

It’s a Moore’s Leg Blaster and rack. It’s a squat bar of sorts. Quite different from any modern squat bars. I’ll have a series of videos out with it soon. It came with the original paperwork and training program.

I have to thank you, special, for this video. I live in Arizona (where Johnny Gibson lived), I never heard of Gibson plates, and since I watched this video a few months ago I've been keeping an eye out for them at garage sales, thrift shops, junk shops, etc. Sure, a long shot, but who knows? Today I paid $14.50 for a 25 lb Gibson dumbbell at a thrift shop. I can't find anything about such a thing online. It consists of four 5-lb plates (and the handle which I presume is five pounds), "Gibson" is imprinted large and boldly on each plate, but they are "fixed" (They spin, but they're welded on, per a small round metal plate separating the plates and the handle). It's REALLY "Old School". No knurling. The welds look rather crude (very lumpy). I presume it's from Gibson's earlier days. I was rummaging through the sporting goods area of a thrift shop, it was buried under some weight vests, and I almost had a heart attack when I saw what this was. I asked the thrift store staff to check and see if there was anything else like this that came in but, alas, there was only this dumbbell. It's got REAL personality. And I've seen no Gibson dumbbell online, for sale or anything else. Thanks again.

That sounds like a pro-style dumbbell. I have a friend who found a similar Gibson pro-style dumbbell. Great find!!! Thanks for watching and commenting.

Is there a way to authenticate factory bored 100s vs someone who bores them in their home shop?
@vintageweightspgh Жыл бұрын
To the best of my knowledge, not a 100% way. However, the condition and age of the plate is consistent with the inner portion of the center hole. I’m sure there are people that have bored them out themselves or at machine shops, but it’s not something the average person can do with the precision of one from York.

Biggest regret might be letting go of a pair of 20kg DD Yorks but the $ i got for them went a long way in gym expansion and upgrades in the earlier years of the cellar
@vintageweightspgh Жыл бұрын
I remember chatting with you about those. Sounds like you at least got a decent amount for them.

Are you strictly a weight guy or do you pick up stuff like the York Iron horseshoe and the Krusher? I like the York Aristocrat and Weider go-go dumbbells, and have several sets. Recently picked up a Jones set, which was a Wisconsin company.

I’d love to find an iron shoe, crusher, and anything else related to strength history. I like my iron boots!

I generally speaking am liking your content. Maybe i also sound lame saying this, but please be careful driving while filming. Distracted driving is dangerous, and a car accident while transporting the equipment you're picking up would be even more dangerous.
@vintageweightspgh Жыл бұрын
Not lame at all! I appreciate the concern. On long drives, I’ve tried recording twice now, and as long as I’m on the highway, I feel safe. Everything is hands free and I keep my eyes on the road. I don’t know if I’ll do it more in the future, but it seemed like an opportunity of time when thoughts are percolating to speak about them.

I have been looking for a vintage standard set. Any advice you can give would be appreciated??
@vintageweightspgh26 күн бұрын
You can usually find older standard York weight plates on the used market. Made in USA, good quality. If you can find for less than a dollar a pound, you’re really getting nice weights for cheap.

Might be more competition here in my area… all I can seem to find are the odd ball Hampton and newer weider

I picked up some rusty billard weight plates and restored them. Would selling them for $1/ pound be considered cheating myself?
@vintageweightspgh Жыл бұрын
Billard standard plates (1” center hole) are usually about 50 cents to a dollar a pound. I have a Billard Standard video on my channel as well as a Billard deep dish Olympic video if you’re interested. Thanks so much for commenting!
@therealme8783 Жыл бұрын
@@vintageweightspgh they are Olympic plates. Thanks for responding!

A set of billard 50lb standard plates would be really cool. Any 75 or 100lb standard would be nice. I do regret passing on some listings recently. More of a vintage machine, but could have got an old school nautilus pullover dirt cheap but I didn't make the drive within 1 day and she was gone the next. Never even used a pullover machine since they are rare in normal gyms. It is what it is.

What's a fair price for pre U.S.A. York milled plates per pound.
@S.Critch6 ай бұрын
I think $1.25-$1.50 in most places is market value for milled back era plates in good condition. Higher for 10s and 5s if they are milled. People often ask $5/pound for those. 2.5’s milled are very valuable. Sometimes you might luck into $1.00.

I was trying to find out the origins of the now ubiquitous generic "Barbell Standard" olympic plates and I saw you on another channel explaining why olympic plates (other than York) don't say 'olympic' on them anymore. There's a company called Barbell Standard whose website's about page includes this excerpt: "Originally founded over 60 years ago, Barbell Standard and our iconic plates are still synonymous with Muscle Beach and the Golden Age of bodybuilding." I've never heard of that company and their youtube channel only started uploading videos 4 weeks ago. Do you have any videos about these specific "Barbell Standard" generic plates?
@vintageweightspgh Жыл бұрын
The best I have produced is the podcast episode of mine that you referenced. My podcast, Home Gym History, is produced by Garage Gym Radio and published to their channel. To the best of my knowledge, the company you’re referencing isn’t the first or only Standard Barbell. But even if they were, they were once mostly made in USA and not that accurate (machined for casting flaws not tolerance) then shifted overseas.
