I too love the torque multiplier tool. That has to be one of the best inventions for tools ever. :) I have never seen anyone lubricate the shims before.... That makes a lot of sense. Great video as always!

Oh I absolutely love this tool. I am buying one for myself. Yes, always lubricate those three shims with oil. So they don’t stick together and spin easily.

Hey! good video! I had just rebuilt my 71 Super with 1641 upgrades and installed the engine fired it up and went to clean up and found my 3 shims hiding in a rag! I got sidetracked by my two kids !! oops! Now I have to do it all over again!

Good video, Slade. I especially liked the trick of sticking the screwdriver in the alternator slot to keep the crank from turning while installing the seal. I like to check my free play before installing the flywheel seal. Then, I remove the flywheel again to install the seal-assuming my free play was in spec. Also, I use my Torquemeister, and I set my torque wrench to 28 ft. lbs. This gives me 252 ft. lbs, so I tighten just a tad more and I know I’m at 253 ... or slightly above.

It was done prior to me putting the seal in. Actually on a completely different day. I had to return my buddies gauge he needed it LOL

Just take your time it will be fine. They may have put the seal in dry or not seated properly. I like using that grease because I know it will not corrode the rubber.

That Torque Multiplier is an awesome tool! I bought one from JBugs specifically to take the drum brakes off and put disc brakes on. It's expensive but worth it! Great video bud! Oh...and I love dielectric grease!

Another great video Slades. Glad to see that 36mm still being put to good use lol. I once was using a different brand socket and put it on my torque wrench and the thing split apart and broke. Luckily they have lifetime warranty lol. Thanks for all the helpful and entertaining videos you always make. Yeah surprisingly that socket has lasted me forever. It’s a craftsman, but it’s not an impact. I cannot believe it never broke on me. But of course now that I said that, you know what will happen. 🤦🏼‍♂️🙄😂

Great videos. You are an absolute genius. I'm in Australia and have stated in your other videos, if you ever visit Western Australia you have free accommodation in Esperance lol. I do have a question......... there is a paper washer/gasket with the dowel holes supplied in the gasket kits. I have seen videos that say just leave them out. I noticed you haven't added it either. I also have a small metal washer/gasket with the 4 dowel holes in it. This will obviously need to be fitted to the crankshaft end before the flywheel. This will affect endplay. Note - this metal shim is 20 thou Have you encountered this at all. Cheers Scotty

Great video. Why do you not use dielectric grease on the flywheel o-ring? You oiled that but used the grease on the seal.

VW Service manual/Bently edition C1969 for Station Wagon, Van, Pickup and Double Cab states torque for flywheel gland nut is 217 pounds. The book How To Keep Your VW alive by John Muir sates 222 pounds for sedan

Great video, but one question. You made a point of explaining why to use dialectric grease on the main seal as it will not errode the rubber. However, then you just put oil on the oring. Why not dialectric on the oring?

I am sure you know this. Since your torque multiplier is 270/30 or 9X. then all you need to get to 253 Ib-ft you need only 28.1~ 28 Ib-ft torque to get to 253 Ib-ft on flywheel nut.

11:47 just divide by 9 the amount of torque you need in the main socket and you will have the amount of torque you need to apply to the 7/16” gear drive… the relation of torque multiplication of this wrench is 1 to 9. Saludos.

I would always check the end play regardless. It’s just a peace of mind. I will be building a new motor some of the parts are back ordered. And I will show absolutely every final detail.

Another Life-Saving Video Slade! I just got that highly-reviewed torque multiplier tool from JBugs. Weird thing is my stock engine's 36mm glad nut from flywheel would not fit in. I was told by one rep at Jbugs that aftermarket and with time the old nut may not fit in. Fine! I ordered a new 36mm stock glandnut.. guess what.. same thing.. its not sliding in. I am concerned because if im going to use the tool to torque this nut that high... it should at least snug in all the way. Whats ur take on that? I contacted JBug 2nd time and they say "this is normal, everyone calls us and then keeps the tool. It'll work". But im skeptical

He made me feel like something is wrong with me to even have a problem with that. I hate it when ppl throw out their resume "oh i have been here for 10 years and..." as if that's gonna help me finish the job here lol. I politely tell him that i feel guilty to return and exchange it because if the next one wont fit then it defeats the purpose.. he responds "oh! I was not going to offer u exchange, I was only going to offer you return if you want to" Its like they dont care and they are OK with it knowing that it does not fit. They already know the problem and its considered "Normal". So i guess im the only crazy one 🤪🤕

I just had that same exact issue with mine! The original was about .5 millimeter narrower and about 1.5 millimeter shorter than the new gland nut. The original went in and out no problem. The new one would not go in more than one half turn. After very careful consideration I decided to take a chance with the German made gland nut and I was able to slowly screw it in. It was tight at fort but once the tread conformed to the crankshaft it was fine. No issues after that.

I can’t get my flywheel completely on the crank? When I take the gland nut off, there’s a gap between the end of the crank and the flywheel. Nothing is bunged up! This is why I removed the engine. This is a junkyard car that I recently got. I had it running. When I push in the clutch, the engine locks up. I can get it free, and it runs fine. But whenever I push in the clutch, engine locks up. Pulled the engine, removed the flywheel and there was that gap. The dowel pins had tipped a little and had deformed the holes in the crank and the flywheel. After careful grinding with a dremel, all is good, but that gap is still there! I would think the two parts should touch? I am an experienced engine builder! Just never touched a vw.somebody did something wrong a long time ago. Any suggestions?

OK that’s strange, I have never had that happen before. Something definitely don’t seem right, unless I’m just being stupid. I would post that on the samba. If I was there in person it probably would make it easier. But it sure sounds kind of strange.

Ok, I went on the samba. There is a possible explanation for this. It turns out that this engine is an older 1200 engine someone put in this 71 superbeetle. Should be a 1600! And it’s problably a six volt engine. Which means differant flywheel, and starter. I think they sorta installed the original 12v fly wheel from this car on an older engine, and made it work. Head scratcher for sure! My kind of luck! Anyway got some more researching to do. Thanks for the response.

After torquing the flywheel to 225 ft lbs, the engine does not turn and it sounds like something is stopping it from turning. Before I did the final torque I could turn it and hear the compression building. Is this how it is supposed to be? Nothing external is preventing the engine from turning…

No it should not be that way at all. You will have compression strokes with a spark plugs in. Don’t force it, remove that nut, and check everything.

@@SladesVWBeetle, thank you! I actually added one shim since every one said to always have at least three. I very carefully removed the shim I added and re-torqued it worked just fine. I am going to have to leave it as it is until the new engine rebuild which is not too far into the future. It has been running fine since the engine was originally built. Thank you so much for your prompt response and I like to complement you on your excellent teaching skills. I have learned so much from all your videos in the past month or so than I had previously to finding your videos.
