I had the opposite problem. My master cylinder seals were shot, and I ordered a new master. I have a 1973 Super, and it turns out the 1973 had two different masters depending on the month of manufacture. The brake line clocking is different... so the fix was to put the new internals in the old master... which worked out fine. But in those days the parts people didn't know about the mid-year changes in the 1973. They were struts, master cylinder, and a bunch of other little stuff I can't remember right now. Beware the 1973 Super.
@SladesVWBeetle Жыл бұрын
I had a 73 Super on my first KZbin round. I did notice there’s some definite differences from early and late
@jemcnair76 Жыл бұрын
@@SladesVWBeetle Yup. The early struts weren't the right diameter (smaller) for the strut tubes, the master clocking for the early units was way wrong, and I seem to remember the rubber brake lines in the front were too short as well. You have to give the parts people the VIN, or the assembly date in the door.

I am hopefully in the final stages of going from a new style pedal system to the old ones.. I was havng the same self-braking issue.. there was no way that I could get the freeplay with the new pedals

Good stuff. Ok, I watched the whole thing. I didn't see any mention of greasing the end of the brake shaft end that's in the master cylinder. Is this necessary? Thanks for the great videos. Very informative.

I am having the exact same problem. Brakes building pressure, changed the master cylinder a few years ago but haven't drove the car much till recently. I have no free play that is for sure. I remember removing the brake pedal assembly, so I'm supposed to start by adjusting that first? And then if that doesn't correct it, adjust the pushrod? Thanks for the videos. Great help.
@styverdyver Жыл бұрын
Timely video. I rebuilt the pedal assembly (using your videos) on my 73 beetle. I removed the pedal stop to repaint etc., and now the clutch pedal has too much play but the brakes seem to be working fine. I want to adjust the pedal stop to remove the clutch pedal play. By adjusting the stop; will it change the brake rod and/or brake pedal play? I did not modify the brake rod in any way during the rebuild.
@SladesVWBeetle Жыл бұрын
When you adjust the pedal stop on the floor, it truly may move your brake pedal and cause you to have to adjust the rod.
@mikejohnson5703 Жыл бұрын
I know this old , but what size is the adjusting nut on the pushrod? I've replaced my master cylinder and have alot of slop.
@SladesVWBeetle Жыл бұрын
I believe the adjusting that is 13 mm. But I’m not near my garage right now

OK got another question! I was told it is not good for the transmission to be towed LONG distance with the two bar designed for VW's... it can damage a manual transmission even in neutral. Do you believe this to be true?
@jeffbannon1345 Жыл бұрын
Slade, once again a great video. I may be “one of those people”!! Given the brake pedal stop needs to be adjusted first before the rod, do you have any tips on determining the correct position of the pedal stop?
@russelltatro2835 Жыл бұрын
I was wondering the same thing.
@SladesVWBeetle Жыл бұрын
Technically you just want it to sit straight up, I really don’t know if that makes sense. If you look from the side view, you would want where your foot presses the brake pad, to be straight up and down even. I don’t know how to explain it on here lol

No more live shows? Also, the interior brake button shows you if there’s an issue with your brakes. Think of it as having a master and a slave setup. The front and rear brakes work independently. If that light doesn’t light up when pressed, or lights up while your driving, your font or rear brakes have an issue. It’s called a ‘press to test’ button. It’s in the owners manual.

@internetkilledthevideostar Жыл бұрын
@@SladesVWBeetle that’s all it is. VW had it right though. If it’s failing, and lights up, at least you have your front or rear brakes still. If you push it, before you start it, and it doesn’t light up, you know you have a problem before heading out. Old aircraft, like the B-52 had/have this neat feature. Let’s you know if the master or slave system is f’ed up.

WITH A BIG PUDDLE OF BREAK FLUID ON THE FLOOR, DO YOU THINK IT'S JUST AN ADJUSTMENT?
@SladesVWBeetle4 ай бұрын
@@stableboynmilkmaid no, I don’t believe that would be an adjustment. You definitely have a leak somewhere. I would clean up the area with brake clean very nicely and dry it. Top off the fluid and have somebody push the pedal very slowly while you look for the leak. Wear safety, glasses, and gloves. And keep your face back while looking for the leak.

@@stableboynmilkmaid I would actually spray some brake, clean all around there and dry everything off really good especially if you have an air compressor. Then top off your brake fluid.
