Hey Vintagebursche. Can I make a little correction to the gun? That is a Thompson 1928 you have there. And that’s as it should be since the M1A1 came into production in 1942. the A1 is distinguished from the 1928 mainly by its charging handle. The M1A1 has its on the right side whilst the 1928 has its on top. Also the A1 does not accept drum mags and is usually seen without vertical front grip. Though the front grip can be changed. Thank you for considering.

Actually Tommy Shelby is more likely to have a M1921 Thompson Sub Machine Gun. These came with a finned barrel Cutts Compensator on the end and 50 round drum magazines. Although the Thompson coiuld be fitted with a 100 round magazine only 20 or 30 round box magazines and the 50 round drum magazine were used in quantity. The drum magazines were heavy and rattled a lot. Almost useless in a military sense but not quite as critical for gangsters.

The real historic gang existed from 1890 until their disappearance in 1920. But the show starts in 1919 and continues up until 1930(as far as season 5). That is why the mugshots don't match the style in the show.

Johannes I’m pretty sure Billy Kimber interacted with both the show’s gang and the IRL one. Also, I think I remember reading that the IRL gang, although it was mainly active during the 1890s, it still ran around in the early 20th century.

Just a note here from a gun collector, the "Tommy Gun" isn't actually a Thompson m1a1. It would likely be a m1921 or m1928. The m1a1 only accepts stick magazines, has a side mounted charging handle, and was used by the US forces during WW2. If seen with a foregrip, drum magazine, and top mounted charging handle it's probably a m1921 or m1928.

Thompson M1928A1 with Cutts Compensator. 50 round or 100 round Drum magazine. Usually stolen from National Guard Armories or from Police, a favorite of Gangsters and Gmen. The M1918 BAR was as popular as that used 20 round magazines in 30.06. The M1A1 Thompson was a U.S. government contract for a simplified and less labor to produce version for WW2. Stellar video by the way.

The M1A1 variant isn’t a well known model. Usually 1921A1 would be the common Military monicker. When people think M1A1 they think M-14 battle rifle. Either way awesome video and throwing in the Tommy gun for effect was icing on the cake!!! Although it seemed like they preferred the BAR and the Lewis Gun. I was also surprised how long they carried Webley revolvers given the time period and all. I thought they would have been heavy into carrying the ol Colt Slab Side (1911)! Which Tommy does start to transition to at the end of season 3 going into season 4. I guess there was the .38Super, and the .380 Frenchie (wimps 9mm). Ok I’m done dwelling on the guns.but let’s face it, if ya like classic firearms it’s a great show for them and the writer does and outstanding job with his research! In closing I’d like to say you answered my question about the little brass tab button thing. I didn’t know it was a removable collar.
