He did act coy about it in the 80’s. He was obviously gay, but many of us weren’t aware that homosexuality was a thing in those days, so we just thought he was effeminate. Same with George Michael throughout Wham! and Faith. I was a little girl and I loved him. My brother would tease me, “He’s gay!” and I’d be like, “No, he NOT!” but I didn’t know what “gay” meant. It just sounded like an insult, coming from my brother, so I had to defend my man.

@@Neevie-StyxCorrect. We really weren't sure if Boy George was or wasn't. He didn't come out . My thinking was he wasn't the first artist to act or dress feminine. We had Alice Cooper and Dee Snider.

@@FrederikSaraberNo...I'm pretty sure THOSE guys are actually, truly....bisexual.... and that really IS...a thing. I don't believe that we either ARE or we're NOT; I agree with Alfred Kinsey and his famous human sexuality scale: most of us fall along a continuum; very few people really are 100% straight or gay. As a gay man myself, I have had a few sexual relationships with women, but I am far more drawn to other guys. We're all on a continuum here.

"Secretly gay and bi" - I did not know about the bassist of Free, Dave Davies, Art Garfunkle (he's married to a woman, I know), bassist Ponozzo of Styx, Nona Hendrix, Debbie Harry, Joplin, Arthur Conley, Tharpe, Labi Sifre, but, I did know about Dusty, Little Richard, Townsend, Weidlin of Go-Gos, Halford, Lennon (really?), and Fred and Kate (as well as Ricky and Keith in the B-52s too, except Cindy), Joan Jett, Mathis, Gore, Lou Reed, June Millington of Fanny, George Michael, Franlkie Goes to Hollywood, Janis Ian, Johnny Ray, Armatrading, Singing Nun, Pete Shelly, and, um, Manilow "bravely" came out as gay at age 70?? Um, er, no. If he were age 17, 20, even 30, yeah...but 55 years after Gay Liberation and Stonewall isn't brave, and, come on, Boy George, Pete Burns, and Morrissey were never "secretly gay," even though most of these others were. I have never been sure if Bowie really WAS bi for real, or if that was just a publicity stunt. He has only ever been linked to women, romantically, except for one story about him and Jaggar. - people you DIDN'T mention include King Coffee of Butthole Surfers. Kid Congo of Cramps and Gun Club, Elton John, Neil Sedaka, Ricky Martin, Rufus Wainwright, Lil Naz X, Melissa Etheridge, and I forget thier names but members of The Searchers, Shadows of Knight, Question Mark & The Mysterians, Edgar Winter Group, Cannibal & The Headhunters, Depeche Mode, Patti Smith Group, The Indigo Girls, Instant Funk, Los Crudos, Husker Du, Village People, Sylvester, Pansy Division, Fifth Column, Tribe 8, as well as Darby Crash of The Germs (a punk rock band produced by Joan Jett) - and I think I remember reading somewhere that Billy Ocean was gay. Of course there are lgbtq people in all walks of life so it really should not be that incredible a shock that there are musicians and vocalists who are lgbtq. There are too many to list them all.

If LBGT+ people had respect and the freedom that heterosexuals do, there would be no need to point out that there are well-respected, talented, lovely people who were and are LGBT+. Visibility is important because those of us in this community have had to hide in order to avoid being arrested (only a few decades ago) and discriminated against (ongoing). Not being visible also allows people to make up lies about who we are. Many of us are so ordinary that people have no idea who we are until we tell them. As people get more used to seeing that we are everywhere and our presence is normalized, we experience less discrimination and more acceptance. People fear what they don't know. Homophobia and transphobia damage people's individual lives and society in many ways. That even costs some people their lives through suicides and murders. This type of video helps us to be known to each other and to others. When we stop experiencing hatred and discrimination, then we will just be a normalized part of society and won't need to make a point of our existence. BTW, heterosexuals make themselves visible constantly, everywhere. You just don't notice it because it is so constant and pervasive. Every time you see a heterosexual couple in the media is one example.

I was a child of the 60s...I knew something was "different" about every one of these people. As a child, their sexuality would NOT occur to me. Looking back, "Well YEAH", still, their contributions to entertainment have NOTHING to do with whom they slept with. This video completely overshadows their contributions to music history. THUMBS DOWN.
