@BigBoyXP40146 жыл бұрын
What's crazy is that someone that collects cars and is clearly an intelligent man wouldn't research the maintenance costs of a vehicle he wanted to purchase (although given all the experience he had he may have just assumed what that would've cost). The maintenance is so insanely expensive because McLaren stipulates the maintenance procedures for the vehicle must be in-line with and comparable to the level of care given to a racecar. Not just a racecar, but a racecar that's being driven to the level that it was designed to be driven every time that it is driven AND under the assumption that it's driven like that several hours a day, several days a week. It's like when people make videos about what it would cost to own a Formula 1; yeah, sure, you can break the value of each of the individual components down and give someone a hard number for the value of the vehicle by itself. But when you take a look at what it costs to maintain that vehicle to the level that it has to be maintained... well, you find out that you basically have to own an entire racing team to even possibly consider it. That's why the McLaren F1 is as expensive to maintain as it is, and honestly taking into account that all of that is absolutely necessary to assure it stays as valuable as it possibly can be and runs to the specs that it is advertised to be able to run at it's entirely worth all of it AND all things considered it's not THAT expensive.

@leoa4c5 жыл бұрын
@@Dredded_one I understand your point. However, in this case, it does not make sense. Both the wheels and tires' specs will be the same - Same wheels, same tires, same pressures. So, there is absolutely no reason to calibrate anything. If we look at racing categories... F1, F2, WEC, WRC, etc. No team calibrates the suspension after a tire change (except between slick and wet tire changes). Even when F1 were allowed to mix up different compounds, the suspension was left alone. If we look at other speed record manufacturers like Jaguar, Bugatti, Koenigsegg, etc, they did not require a "tire calibration". And I don't think that modern McLarens require it either. It was a smart scam by McLaren in the 90's, and I assume that most costumers actually fell for it :)

seems pretty much like a fancy story to make the owners think they are not being scammed. Of course race car tires are balanced on a machine and not everything adjusted to them. Or are really complex race cars like F1 or LMP1 doing another 2-3 adjustment pit stops after the actual pit stop? Would only make sense if they put a new model of a tire on there, but even then it is very far fetched. And McLaren for sure only puts lifespans on half the parts to make sure they earn a load of money on maintenance even though most F1s just do max. 500 kilometers a year

It is to do with Camber changes, different compounds will make the car roll over onto the tyre more so than others, the stickier the tyre, the more it will need a camber adjustment and also sway bars tightened and spring rates changed along with rebound settings too, obviously this is only if you are super good on a track and are on track all the time, for the road with this guy, he didn't need all of that for just putting around, especially seeing he is a self professed "Not a good driver" and never goes to the track (What a shame). McLaren are right in what they say about the adjustments, but for this guy? Yeah he never needed it, they did shaft him IMO too, yes they are great cars, but the basics of physics and engineering is essentially the same across all performance cars, I think McLaren are just super picky about everything as if you are always sitting in the pits of an F1 garage, for 99% of people this is overkill.

It’s essentially a new engine and it was purpose built for the F1, however it shares a similar design and is designated as an iteration in the same family as the engine out of an 8 series (e31). It uses quite a bit of off the shelf bmw parts but from a wide variety of different engines. He’s definitely wrong about it being a converted race car for the streets. It’s actually the other way around, it was originally a purpose built streetcar using many properties of race cars to create an ultimate streetcar. Awesome video but I have to mention one thing, Gordon Murray built the F1 as a road car first and foremost. That was always the goal and is why is has three seats and as much luggage capacity as a ford fiesta. Even after seeing it's success he was reluctant to give the go ahead on the F1 GTR's of 1995 to be made.
@chir0pter5 жыл бұрын
I mean it was the homologation specials like the 911 GTR and CLK GTR that forced McLaren to actually develop the car for the track, creating the 1997 Longtail. What made it amazing was that, before that, a road car competed at a high level racing class with minimal modifications.
@Jdalio55 жыл бұрын
The 2nd &3rd seats were after thoughts...if they werent plausible this car would still exist as a 1 seater. Sorry but your premise is not accurate!
@xxxDeaDLocKxxx5 жыл бұрын
@@Jdalio5 You are incorrect. If you study the history of the car or read the book Driving Ambition, you will know this. GM designed this first and foremost as a road car (but an uncompromising one). Yes, it has race-derived tech (F1 tech always filters down to the masses eventually), but this priority is also why it has A/C, a radio and lots of luggage space (relatively speaking). The driver sits in the middle because GM felt that was the purest and most natural driving position for any car, and results in the best possible field of vision - not because it was designed as a race car. From the outset, it was designed as a three-passenger car. While there were always questions on how the F1 would perform in professional racing, it was never a design goal and never seriously considered until well after the car had entered production. Some individuals closely connected to McLaren convinced them to work on a racing variant after launch. While other manufacturers had to build "homologation specials" (street-legal versions) to conform to the rules of some racing series, the street versions they produced were difficult to drive and extremely uncomfortable to use on the road (CLK-GTR, GT1 etc) - they truly were race cars converted for road use as cheaply and simply as possible to just barely conform to the rules at the time. In fact, the spirit of the rules were such that the racing was meant to be for race cars that were variants of road cars, not the other way around. Most of the manufacturers however built the race car first and the road car second, flouting the true spirit of the rules and the racing series. McLaren was the only manufacturer who did it properly - they adapted a base road car for racing. The amazing thing about it is that in spite of relatively minimal mods to the car, it still beat cars designed for the track. This is perhaps the best testimony on the underlying design and the genius of GM. The fact that it broke the speed record and held that record for a decade was also a byproduct of the design - it was never a serious goal. GM felt speed-chasing was just headline bullshit, and he focused instead on chasing the best possible driving experience with the lightest possible components, whilst still maintaining a base level of comfort and practicality for long-distance road use. TLDR: The design absolutely was, first and foremost, a road car. This is indisputable if you speak to, watch the interviews of or read the writings of anyone involved in the development of the F1.

while it's nice to hear an ex-owner talk about his car... there is a huge amount of factual inaccuracy in this video. I won't go through it all as i will just get a lot of hate for it, but i'll just point out this. The Mclaren F1 was expressly a ROAD CAR, definitely not a race car. This is both in Gordan Murray's design brief, calibration of suspension, bushings, and a host of other parts including the transmission, intake system, exhaust and so much more. In fact, when customers asked to take this car racing, Mclaren initially denied their request because these cars were designed at all levels as a road car. It's only after a lot of pressure, that they made some dedicated race cars out of the F1 (GTR, GTR Longtail etc etc) and it was adapted to the track. It's ok to not know all your facts, but there is so much in this video which is incorrect that it's a bit of a letdown.. especially when it's an actual owner who is giving the bad info. oh well.. it's just the internet. Aside from the comment about the body being fiberglass, he also thinks it has some standard BMW V12 engine. He doesn’t understand that it’s a completely bespoke BMW engine designed only for the F1 and not used in any other car in the world. Doesn’t mean it’s not reliable but even his assumption about the car being reliable for using some off the shelf BMW engine is wrong. Half his complaints are ridiculous. I wouldn’t bother changing the fire extinguisher or replacing the tires. I believe they came with Michelin tires. They are fine for tooling around everyday driving for well over 3 yrs, particularly if they have like 100 miles on them. You’re not doing any top speed runs anyway and driving like Ms. Daisy in an F1 on 3+ yr old tires won’t blow the car up. Perhaps I may replace the fuel cell if it is something that really does degrade over time but otherwise, most of the stuff can be ignored as no one is driving these cars like a race car. Hell they’re all 20+ yrs old now... not like you’re going to void the warranty. Even if you did, you’d still be able to sell it for a ton b/c the car is so rare.

@@AngelGonzalez-xk8yl That's good for this guy because if he was a car guy he would be wearing blinders, and wouldn't give us the straight talk about how the car really is. He basically said if you want a car that lives up to it's hype it's not this one. It's an alright car, but you wouldn't dare put 100,000 miles on one. If you wanted to put 100k miles on a F1, even if you're one of the best drivers on the planet you'll go through many clutches because they're dog-shit that break every 10-15k miles with a good driver according to it's creator. jalopnik.com/replacing-the-clutch-in-a-mclaren-f1-involves-a-big-sla-1821432923 >The tool list to perform a clutch replacement includes a slab of granite. The F1 uses a multi-disc clutch and a small-diameter flywheel with a replaceable friction surface. To eliminate clutch chatter, the new friction surface must be adjusted to less than five hundredths of a millimeter of runout. >Measuring this requires a dial indicator and a dead-flat surface on which to spin the flywheel. Hines’ chunk of granite comes with a certificate, verifying its flatness down to 0.00004 inches. It's a load of bullshit that indicates that the car is all Hype. The amount of bullshit that goes with a F1 would enable you to put a million miles on a LFA.

"This truly was built as a racecar first, that they then made street legal" that's totally not true, that's why it was so surprising that it win Le Man's the first year, the Porsche GT1 and Mercedes CLK GTR were the first that were made as racecars then made street legal and were much more extreme than the F1, not undermining the F1, just saying this is wrong

@@themarauder6108, you're luckier than most in that case. I haven't known a single McLaren owner who hasn't encountered major problems with their car. Sold a McLaren MP-4-12C to buy a new NSX. It was the best decision I ever made because the McLaren though attractive in many ways was an absolute nightmare to keep on the road. I don't care that McLaren honored the $89,000+ in repairs for the 11 months we kept it! Transmission failure/problems, oil leaks, LED taillights failing, instrument panel lights not working, ECU replacement (2X), leaking struts, creaks rattles, electrical gremlins, parts availability etc. etc. etc. Christ what a beautifully designed but horribly executed and unreliable vehicle. The POS like our Ferrari 348 spent more time in the shop than on the road! Getting into an exotic car and having it start and actually be capable of going on a road trip without having to worry about a problem is truly enjoyable. The NSX is far more reliable, great at everything and better than the McLaren (even when the McLaren was working). The McLaren was never a great car but, it was better (even great at) frustrating and completely ruining your driving experience with its constant issues and breakdowns. Never again.

Definitely one of the most honest and unique takes on McLaren F1 ownership I've ever heard. And I absolutely see why it left such a bad taste in his mouth. We're all OK with the thought of paying to play, and we know that if we took a car like that out for a track day there's going to be some costs that accompany that, but the thought of a vehicle costing you $50k a year just to sit there looking pretty when you had no forewarning of its impending rise in value would put most anyone off. And if you don't have a problem spending $800 on a $10 extinguisher, you're probably never going to have to make that kind of decision because you're obviously so bad with money that you'll never have enough of it to buy the kind of car that requires you do so.
