I always enjoy your stories Alex, not only for the sometimes humorous and awkward scenarios that play out, but also for the lessons that you actually teach on how to professionally deal with potential negative outcomes and turn them into positives. It starts with taking ownership of the mistakes and applying the same formula for your companies success to the process of resolving conflicts. I have had the great fortune of working for some very successful business owners and managers and learned many lessons from them. Lessons that have served me well as I applied them in my managerial experiences. I wish I could have had the opportunity to meet and work for you Alex. Because you are like an encyclopedia of managerial expertise. #Respect

See watching this I can't help feeling 4hrs to park 5000 cars isn't really enough time in anyone's book. Also having cars still arriving at 7pm race start time will always cause that last minute rush. I know it's easy with hindsight, but opening the gates at Midday and then subsequently closing the gates at 6 - 1 hr before race start might of been easier allowing that last hour for celebrities/VIPs or other issues. Them the "last minute rush" would be an HR before race start. Another option would be to allocate a parking "time window" starting from midday -2pm 2pm - 4pm... 4pm - 6pm that would be a 3 tierd pricing structure that would increase closer to race start. The parking window would be notified ( printed ) on purchase the ticket. This way youd have some idea of how the incoming car flow. I'm not knocking anyone. You did everything you could. But as you know from experience Alex and I from life experience, things always takes longer than anticipated... Love your stories.

How did they not take human nature into account? Historically, more people start showing up the closer an event gets to starting. Interesting story though.

One of the simple ways to get around some of the last minute rush is to charge cheaper parking earlier in the day. $20 all day/ event parking if you arrive and park between 3 and 4pm. $25 for arrival and park between 4 and 5pm. $40 for arrive and park after 5.

honestly that was the most boring of all his stories. sure there was some interesting side info, but the main part of the story was, customer didnt expect all his viewers to appear within last hour (which is to be expected) and traffic backed up so much he had to advice the valet company to not charge any more cars coming in. I was really expecting a real story out of this how someone tricked one of the guys collecting the money or something but this was just a story of mismanagement.

At University I had a professor who was an expert on these kinds of issues. It is a queueuing problem and there are complex models on how to deal with them. You will get spikes where you will get too many people arriving and lulls where your employees don't have enough to do. It is similar to how restaurants have to schedule around lunch and dinner rushes or grocery stores schedule cashiers. In this case, what they needed was a fourth or fifth parking lot that they could open when the last-hour rush became too great to handle with three lots.

Those fines can be steep. Especially if they have to have police officers pulled in to direct traffic around them. Then the city starts billing for the officers times, but all the cops involved which could be up to 30. And at the 'event rate' cops get paid at for working off duty events, which could be up to $35 per hour. Then there is the fine the city just straight levels and that can be up to $5000. You lose $16k in revenue, but you save yourself 25k in fines.

First thing that comes to mind is to offer a discount if people arrive early. Basically, some time of incentive to arrive early so that the parking is more spread out. Is this why some places have promotions with gifts for the first 100 fans or if you arrive before X time?

As a person who used to have to cross Tara Blvd regularly, I know exactly the effect traffic at Atlanta Motor Speedway has. When you get traffic for events at the track, it backs up Route 1941 for miles upon miles. Back before the intersection where I lived was redone, you legitimately could not get out of the main exit for the subdivision on NASCAR race weekends and had to go 2 miles to another exit where there was a traffic light to go down towards Jonesboro

You just made me think of something, here in Florida you pay $25-50 at the theme parks to park. Not valet just to get into their area. If 5,000x20 is 100k. These theme parks are cleaning up by charging even more, probably parking close to the same amount and still charging a entrance fee for the park itself.

A burning question that I have is HOW do you hire that many honest people at one time and keep them honest? If everyone was literally walking around with backpacks full of cash it would seem tempting to "skim" some of that money given the scale of that operation. If I was one of your parking attendants I certainly wouldn't steal a single penny from you but in the back of my mind I'd be thinking about how impossible it would be to have 20 parking attendants each asking for $20 from 5000 customers and some of the money not disappear. I get that your attendants are issuing tickets and someone's always keeping count of the spaces but at the end of the day if the money comes up short, how do you know who the culprit is?

Every time I hear about these stories, I wonder why valet even exists. As an European it sounds so stupid to not park the car myself and let the young enthusiastic guys and girls park my car somewhere "safe". Edit: Lol I was too early, they did exactly what you should do in this situation. Just direct the people to the parking place.

Sometimes a venue will have a larger than usual event, so they don't have enough parking. They will use valet services to park the cars very close to one another, or to double park, so that they can fit a lot more cars in.

My friend managed a store for a large multinational retailer. I was looking for another opportunity and he brought me on to help with their yearly inventory. Over three months, I set up their program and trained them. I used the companies existing software, etc. Inventory comes around and when they signed off at the end of the day, it was 0.08. I was happy. The next morning at our followup meeting, in walks regional and corporate...and they freaking grilled me. Didn't pursue that business venture any further.

Directional parking is horrible. You tell people what to do and then they just do whatever they want. Total nightmare waste of time. And then u get yelled at bc some people didn’t listen and are blocking other cars from leaving

As a german, I don't really get the gist of the story. Here, it is: You can park anywhere around, if you're lucky to find a spot. But If you're notz, we gonna charge you premium. A concert or any other popular venue? Find a parking spot. Or take the leap and pay $30. Not a big price to pay on a $500 event.

He has too many great stories. Either a crazy eventful valet thing happens every day. Or most of these are fiction. I believe I know the answer.

Parking a car every 30 seconds? That's only 120 an hour and they needed to park ~5k cars lol

Unless you buy by some miracle empty land and asphalt acres next to a major sport/cultural/tourist venue that does not own it themselves I wouldn't count on it :)
