Yup I always tip a $20 to $40, ask their names, shake hands, and treat them like the humans they are. Nothing bad has ever happened to any supercar I've parked with a valet. I've come on other days in my truck or the wife's Benz and they recognize me and know me by name. Same tip, doesn't matter what car I'm in. Always upfront, no damage, no issues. As for the joyriding cars thing, used to work valet. At the time I had a 1999 Camaro Z28, LS1 V8, 3.73 geared, automatic, loud exhaust, FAST. So I never really joyrided anybody's car, I mean what's the point, my car is faster. Until I got behind the wheel of a black 2005ish supercharged Benz E55 AMG. Had to park on the 4th floor, very busy night. HOLY SHIT was that thing fast, never felt another car with that responsive of a throttle or that much low end grunt. Plus it made all kinds of cool V8 noises, tire sqeualing and supercharger whine. I never did get above 20-25 in the garage, but you can damn well bet I got there in less than a second lol. Anyways got back down to the desk and the phone rang, I picked it up. "Yeah there was some valet guy driving stupid fast in the parking garage in a very loud black Mercedes, can I speak to your manager" "I am the manager, and I know exactly who that was driving that car. Trust me I will have a word with him, he won't be working tomorrow" "Okay well thanks. He was really driving like an asshole" So I was the asshole, the manager and I wasn't working the next day lol.

@@deheerdeheer First thing to know about US cities is that the vast majority of them are sprawling and have deliberately-broken public transportation. So, if you have any means at all and place any value on your time, you drive your own car to places you want to go. Many if not most upscale restaurants require valet service. You don't get to eat there if you don't drop off your keys with the valet, so figure in the additional costs when making your plans. It may be a flex thing but more so for the restaurants than the guests as the driver of a 13-year old Honda Civic such as myself would attest. That's still no excuse to stiff the valets though; they're earning an honest living here. Other places you might encounter valet service are at malls, events, clubs, bars, restaurants, etc that were built without or otherwise find themselves without sufficient parking space for their capacity. This most often happens at places where real estate is at a huge premium such as in city centers. I personally try to avoid going places where I know I'll need to valet; it's an order of magnitude more expensive than paying a parking meter on a city street or in a public garage.

I love and hate hearing these stories. As a valet we are treated like shit on a daily basis. Its never up front to your face; its more subtle. My team of 12 guys parks 15-20k cars a year at our resort. we maybe have 4-6 at fault accidents a year. The greatest thing we did was add cameras all over the lot. People love to come to the resort and then blame the valet for scratching their car. No we have HD video to show actually no it did not happen here. I've been doing valet for 7 years, its physical, fun, and financially rewarding.

I’ve been a supervisor of 2 different Casinos in a tourist town, figured I’d throw my answers too. 10. On average, we usually run with 5-6 Valet on any given night. Most I’ve been at work for was 1100 cars with a lot that only held 450 cars. We have a bigger casino that I know has hit over 2200. 9. Things happen. We go months and months without any damage. 8. For us, you must be 21+ and have a clean driving record for the last 5 years. And pass a drug test. 7. I can’t imagine being an owner of a valet company, just being a supervisor of valet is a lot. We’re very high volume for the staff we run with though. 6. For us, it depends. At one casino, we split everything, so it didn’t matter. At my current casino, we keep our own tips, so tipping up front and at the end is good. And if you tip $20 it won’t get you up front but will get priority from us. 5. It’s hard to say, we deal with multiple Bentley, RR, Lamborghini, McLarens, Ferrari’s, Maybachs, etc a week. Hard to know what the most valuable is. 4. Biggest tip at one time was $250. I’ve had co workers get $400-$500 though. Worst tips are stiffs, but working at casinos. We’ve definitely had someone give us 7c cash out vouchers. 4. Probably when our valet ran a C7 Corvette into a trailer carrying a 65” Mustang. Instantly fired lol. No one was happy about that. 2. One of our employees forgot to lock a door in our lot one day. When a runner went to get it in the morning, there was a naked homeless man in the backseat that woke up and attacked our runner. 1. Short answer, yes. But it really is rare in our area. All of our lots have security cameras, and they are on property. If you joyride in someone’s car, you will get fired. Doesn’t mean people haven’t tried, but they’re generally gone afterwards. We’re at work to make money, and the pay is pretty damn good. It’s not worth losing the job to get 30 seconds in a cool car.

I’ll be honest, my only experience with a valet, I didn’t tip. I was 19, it was 2001, and I was dealing with a lot of culture shock. This was one of them. I was staying at a Motel 6, and they had complementary valet. I thought that was odd. It’s a Motel. Why can’t I just park myself? Complementary, huh? So, that means free, right? You couldn’t park your car anywhere else. They had to take it. I remember wanting to get something out of my car and they wanted to bring out my car. I told them no. It was literally right there. I can walk 20 feet. It would take longer for them to bring it up, and then repark it. 19 years later, if they expected me to tip them, I don’t feel bad about it. It’s complementary, so Motel 6 should be paying them, right? They essentially were an elevator operator, gas station attendant, or restroom attendant who offers you soap. What kind of job is that? I can do this myself. It’s more of an inconvenience that you’re even there in the first place, and now I have to pay for a service I don’t even need? Sure, there’s lots of places where a valet is an important job, but not here.

With the whole joy-ridding thing, I've been in a situation where a friends new manual M3 got put into an overflow lot, and while we were walking around, we saw it coming down the street flatout, doing about 40 or 50 in a 25 so the valet could get it parked up front. I guess some of the spots opened up or he just needed to get back to the booth, but when we saw that we immediately got up and went home.

Had an illegal unlicensed valet smash a car in to my rental and another vehicle in Miami . Restaurant manager said not his problem as he only leased the space to the valet company. Police showed and valet service provided no insurance or driver license info. Luckily, was a company rental and they had full coverage on car or I probably would have been screwed.

As a current Valet I can confirm a lot of this is spot on. Joyriding however is not an everyday thing. But importantly more is tips. You tip a valet as you would tip a waiter at a restaurant. Don’t be the person with the “why should I tip them if they’re just doing their job” excuse.

What a truly abysmal company Alex is running. When I was younger I worked for a very large resort with a valet staff about the size of Alex's whole company. Joyrides don't happen. We averaged SIGNIFICANTLY less than "1%" incidents. Forbes recommends you tip 1$ per star(restaurant, spa, hotel, etc) every time the vehicle moves. So at a 5 star hotel, you pay 5$ when its parked, and 5$ when its brought back to you is the recommendation. We also never saw any of these idiotic things his employees have done. Furthermore, with regular "lot checks"(checking the doors and windows of every vehicle parked) we had never had a single stolen vehicle. And no. You typically won't be allowed to park "up front" "yourself" if you give the valets a lot of money up front. That only applies to fly-by-night operations like Alex seems to run. The rule of thumb. You can trust a valet service that is ran by the restaurant, hotel, etc. Don't trust a valet service that is just contracted for a job.

I loved being a valet. Some people suck, some people are great most are just chill. I liked the aspect of being outside running around and just making some side cash. I worked as a valet for 3 years to buy some rental properties so I could keep my day job and retire earlier. Everything this guy says is incredibly accurate and it makes me smile.

I have to valet my car when I visit my aunt. She lives in a condo, gated community in Philly. Cars I've driven there: 1994 Miata (in not great shape), 1987 Corolla (decent for a 1987 Corolla), and a 2008 Yaris (lowered, dirty, and covered in dings and dents). At most I've tipped the valet $2. We've even been told not to tip them there because they're "taken care of pretty well". I think it's different when it's a place people live rather than an event or restaurant. Like, I'm just here to see my aunt... I already had to pay tolls and gas to get here lol look at my car I'm not made of money. Even my aunt drives a 2011 Camry. However, there are plenty of Porsches, high-end Mercs, Bentleys, Maseratis, and I've seen the occasional supercar. But the people that live there don't have to valet, only guests.
