I've wrapped a lot of bike parts in my day. EX250F, MT-03, FZ-07, Sportster X, Monster 797, few Groms and others I can't remember. Most of them were my friends bikes that I had the tools to do it. So I let them use them, and helped out. I'm not a professional to any extent, but I enjoy doing it. Tanks are always the hardest part. I do have some tips tho. Invest in a actual heat gun. It makes working with the wrap so much easier. You can pick up a cheap one at Amazon or a hardware store for $20-30USD. The difference it makes is night and day. I used a hairdryer for the Ninja which has a simpler tank than the MT. Yet had a easier time with the MT cause of the heat gun. I also use what is called cold stretching. It's were you use as little of the heat gun as possible. It is more time consuming, but you have less chance of the wrap warping. You can wrap stretch with just the heat from your fingers and friction. This will rub your fingers raw if you don't wear gloves, but I like to be able to feel what the material is doing. It's kinda up to you where and when you want to use the heat gun. Weird curves, line changes or to get bubbles out is the only time I use it. Hit the whole thing with the heat gun once you're done to make sure the adhesive is activated and you're good. I watched a vid from Adobo Moto and went to town. It's a little dry, but has a lot of good info.

Ideally you should’ve pre stretched the vinyl and covered the top, then as you heat the sides it shrinks back and takes away a lot of that excess you were left with. You need to hit it afterwards to about 85-90 degrees to kill the memory so a heat gun and thermometer is essential. Good effort though

For an amateur was not too bad, actually. But, tbh, I'm curious how the edges are holding since then. 1st, brushed look vinyls can be very challenging anyway, it must be tackled carefully to keep the lines nice and not distorted. 2nd, trying do wrap in one piece a bike tank is another big challenging job. 3rd practice is a good teacher 😉 If you want my advice, for a future wrap, - place the tank on a stand, so it gives you access to work easily on the bottom, - ask a friend for help, much easy to work in 2 (3 even better) - heat the vinyl with a proper heat gun, to 50° - pre-stretch the vinyl then place it on the top and try to mold it to the shape of the tank - while you are doing this, be careful not to over-stretch the vinyl !! - heat the vinyl on the recessed areas, so the memory of the film will shrink it back to the original state ( like this you won't have so much material to work with and trying to get rid of it) - try not to over heat and keep stretching the vinyl, to avoid stretch marks and glue lines - go with the vinyl under the tank so it gives you a inner peace that won't start to peel off with time. Voila!
@avry872 жыл бұрын
And another thing, when you are heating the material to stick it in a recessed area, don't stick it from the middle, as you will put too much tension in the vinyl. Instead work it in from the lowest tension point to the highest tension point. Hope it makes sense
@AndyManCam2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Good tips. I don’t think I’ll be doing it again in a hurry though! I did however watch on the official 3M tutorials that they recommended heating and then working from the middle of a recess outwards as this spreads the tension across the space, instead of causing it to ramp up the further you go.

Really impressive job. I'm surprised it was possible with a single piece. I'm still working out how to get the tank off (undoing the the connections without dropping it). 😂
@AndyManCam3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Craig! I was convinced it was possible, right up until the point i had it on the table! 😅 I reckon a tank removal video might be in order, but with better light and more time!

It may not be spotless perfect but you did a bloody good job, tempted to say much better than most of the so-called professionals. Double kudos mate! I'd have thrown the thing over the window ten times over ha ha ha.

Thanks JB. Simply the fact that I didn'T want to immediately tear it off was already a win for me! I'll try again when the bike is shored up for winter!

Keep it up!! Looks great, quick shifter time!! Haha only Honda mod worth the $$
@AndyManCam3 жыл бұрын
Thanks John! I'm still not decided as to whether or not I want to put the quick shifter on. In any case, it wouldn't be the 800€ Honda unit! That's too many $$'s for my tastes! :D

Good effort, tbh i didn't fancy your chances with the tank shape but still looks pretty good.... if you squint :)

Thanks CB. I was surprised too! Agreed with the squinting!

Looking at the shape of that tank, it really isn’t ideal for wrapping. Worked with 3M Dinoc sheet a couple of times on architectural projects with flat surfaces….. a total nightmare. Brave effort and final result was a solid 85%. Welcome to the 80 percenters Andy., not perfect but good enough. :D
@AndyManCam3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely not! It was a real challenge! I’m happy with 85% for now!

Well I think you’ve done another great job Andy. I certainly would never have attempted that, far too much of a faff for me. It looks really good from the pictures on film. Why not just go the whole hog and have it resprayed with a decent finish by a good painter. Just a thought. Probably cost prohibited?
@AndyManCam3 жыл бұрын
It's something I have considered TB. It would be pricey though. I've also considered having it professionally stripped, brushed and laquered to give a real brushed metal effect. Maybe ideas for a little further down the line.

Good job Andy, how long did it take just to do the wrapping part, not including the prepping or removing and refitting of parts ?
@AndyManCam3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Patrick. I think probably about 2 hours.

Andy did have to drain the gasoline out of the tank before you started the work on the tank ?
@AndyManCam3 жыл бұрын
I siphoned all but a few drops out. Not least because I had to carry the tank up 5 flights of stairs to the kitchen!
