19:53 Your issues might be caused by the length of the cable. Officially, the USB protocol only supports cables of up to 1m for 3.1 gen2 and up to 2m for gen1. It also requires the cable to have an E-marker chip which ensures the host and client device are aware of the cable's limitations for maximum current and data speed. By contrast, a USB type-C to type-C cable using the USB 2.0 protocol can be up to 4m long and the E-marker is optional. So even though they may have the same connector, not all USB C cables are created equal. In general, don't skimp when buying USB 3.1 cables and keep that maximum length in mind. Longer cables are available but may not work.

Yep, if only "Universal" Serial Bus was truly universal, lol. Viofo now offers 1.8m and 2.5m cables off their website. It sounds like they're also recommending USB 2.0 cables over 3.0 to reduce interference. dashcamtalk.com/forum/threads/viofo-a329-2ch-testing-review-rcg.51797/page-9#post-627752

Also important is remembering not all USB cables provide both electrical power and data transfer. So grabbing random ones from around the house will give different results. Some cables only provide electrical power, particularly if made for a device that won't need the data transfer capability. It's cheaper for a product manufacturer to purchase and include a power-only cable if that is all that is needed.

Suggested feedback for Viofo (manufacturer developers): 1). Make it so you can set to what device to record (external SSD or internal SD card) based on time, so that you can record when car is off to internal SD to save on power consumption. 2). Add another output port to add a third camera (possibly with a USB-C port). 3). Allow a time setting to set HDR recording mode (ex.: on at nighttime and off during daytime).

Apart from the immense added convenience of not bothering about storage limit and remotely viewing the footage from anywhere, under the current setup if my car or the dashcam is stolen, my footage goes away with the thief. Looks like a solid evolution. They took the processing for the interior camera, and allocated it to 60fps capabilities. Nice addition to the line. Im not a knowledgeable silicon guy, but i would guess that adding the processing for the third camera (while keeping 4k/60) is a thermal management hurdle, at this time. The A329 has an obnoxious amount of oversharpening. They need to dial it back. While 60 fps might not help reading the license plates, the cars on the other side of the highway appear to have less motion blur in the segment beginning at 10:51.

@VictorF032615 күн бұрын
Note that USB C cables vastly differ in specification. This is because USB C unlike USB A has an encoder chip inside the cable end. The encoder chip has several functionality that some companies don't implement. For instance, USB C can be used for up to 100W power delivery, but will not do it if the cable is programmed so that the maximum limit is say 20W. Charging USB C cables usually dont have data wires inside to save cost so its physically incapable of transmitting data. Data transmission is also an issue, the encoder can support different data rates up to 40gbps, but some might only support up to the USB 2.0 standard of 480mbps. Now this might be ok for camera usage since sd card write speeds are up to 40mbps anyways. But if you want to connect an ssd to a PC it might take forever with the incorrect cable. The most consistent cable I found are the thunderbolt 3 and up cables for data transfer. Even with the right cables though if the device you're plugging into doesnt support the full feature it wont work either at full spec so a bit of a mess. But thats just why his power cable cable didn't work.

Now that I’ve bought it, here are my two cents. I’ve posted a clip recorded by the front dashcam without sound on my channel. I removed the CPL filter because, with a ceramic film on the front window, it caused a birefringent effect that spoiled the footage. The clip I posted appears overly sharpened and processed. If you look closely at the overhead power lines at the start of the clip, you’ll notice white fringes around them. While this level of digital processing might be helpful for reading license plates, I personally prefer the image quality of the A229 that I keep seeing on other KZbin channels, including this one. This is the most expensive dashcam I’ve ever purchased, yet I still favour the footage from the A229-it really stands out compared to other renowned Korean brands. Although I initially bought this dashcam for security, I was also hoping to use it as a mini GoPro for vlogging. At this point, though, I’m generally disappointed with the video quality and accept that it serves well as a security camera. Some sunsets in Thailand can unexpectedly look spectacular; it would be nice to capture a few clips to use for social media from time to time.

Like others have said, the problem may with with the cables you're using being that there's cables which are USBC 2.0 which are good and fine for power, but may not transfer data fast enough. Typically, the faster the data transfer, the shorter the cable. For length and fast data, you may need a USB4.0 which should allow for a longer cable with faster speeds.

You know what would really improve these devices is some sort of AI that could actively focus more of the pixels on the most important feature we need to record, like license plates! That be the real game changer. For now, adding more camera pixels is the more costly shotgun approach that marginally works.
@VortexRadar2 ай бұрын
Would you mind being more specific? I know AI had become a bit of a magical buzzword, but what, exactly, should it do with the lens, sensor, processing, etc.?
@xolomartinez60362 ай бұрын
@@VortexRadar It would have to be targeted towards high value environmental features such as license plates and less towards extraneous details such as the roadway, sky, etc. As it is, they are processing video/pixels so this shouldn't be too far outside their realm of expertise. With some extra processing, maybe more of the pixels could be focused on the vehicle plates than on the entirety of the scene. Or like a fovea that captures high def. It only has to do this for an instance, essentially IDing the vehicle as part of metadata it would collect during a run. Once it has the data, it doesn't even need to be recording high def. It would just have the data in case it were ever needed later. It would only need a single high res snapshot of a plate/vehicle stored to not overload memory. Each new drive run would auto clear RAM. Just something like that, nothing fancy. The AI part is just IDing vehicles and moving on. Like all I needed in the hit and run was the front grill, plate, driver's face. 3 decent snapshots and I'm good. Time, date, other properties are good too.

@@VortexRadar There's a lot of memory options out there for the a229/a329. Would a SanDisk V30 512GB 190MB/s work just as well as Viofo brand? And yes, AI is way over-used term but not in the way I'm suggesting. AI would be used to ID by category things like plates, front or back of a vehicle and if possible grab an image of the driver. Just a limited scope and mostly never necessary except in situations involving accidents. Hopefully these detail are used only for crash purposes, not to harass and stalk random people.

The A329 seems to be good regarding the use of an external hard drive, but is let down regarding not having HDR on the 60 fps mode, which, going by the night samples, makes it redundant. What's the sharpness like on the A329 on the 4K 30fps mode vs the 60fps mode? As previously mentioned is a bit over sharp. Seeing the photo stills differences is good, but the 30 vs. 60 is a bit of a gaming meme as you can't see the difference. It's a good comparison video. The best is to have a bigger sensor with a better lens with a higher resolution outcome.

Thank you for this! You’re extremely thorough!! Love your videos as I’m a researcher when I buy electronics that are pricy. I have one question, would the scenario where someone steals the dash cam… would one still record via as card and just offload to ssd every day? If it can only record using one or the other, I don’t see the benefit of having the ssd hooked to it in the car like you suggested as if someone steels the camera shouldn’t they take the ssd too? I’m trying to understand if I’d want to run ssd or the card and just offload to the ssd. I guess. 😊
@VortexRadarАй бұрын
Yeah it’s either or so your best bet would be to hide the SSD somewhere (the glovebox probably wasn’t the best example) so that if they grab the dashcam, they won’t also get the SSD.

You could have prepared the drive using disk utilities on the mac, you just need to go up a level to the physical disk. You were trying to modify the volume that was already created, instead of changing the disk at the root level.

How do these Viofo’s handle heat 38c and above?
@Tellyawhat42 ай бұрын
On a 38c day, it's a lot hotter than that inside the car!

If license plates are more readable that is always a great idea. I believe the 229 Pro had problems with that from what I hear. Now about the SSD support how does that work? If you plug in an SSD will it then copy the contents of the SD card to it? I hope I don't have to keep the SSD plugged in for it to work.
@VortexRadar26 күн бұрын
What sorts of problems? The A229 Pro has been the gold standard for reading plates. For the SSD, you can either write all videos to the SSD while you drive or you can selectively copy clips from the MicroSD to the SSD.

I am finding that most dash cams cannot be powered by a usb-c brick - my car only has usb-c ports and most dash cams do not boot with that power source. The provided cigarette lighter power source works - but not a usb-c to usb-c cable to my car or a power bric. Can you please check if this camera work with usb-c power?

Thanks for the review. 2 notes.....MOST usb cables today are charge only, they lack data transmission capability. The other note would be to have been able to tell us the micro sd compatibility re. capacity. I was unable to find on their site what the max capacity supported by the micro sd port, though they show only a 256mb card in their ad. I have my music playlist on a 1tb card and have never come close to maxing it out.

Yes the USB thing is well documented and affects many other things like radar detectors that need data transmission. It's a well-known headache. There are a LOT of things that were not included in this video, lol, including max video card size. It's already half an hour long. Too many things and people complain about its length. Too few and people complain that something is missing. No one is ever happy... Anyways, if you go to the website for the dashcam and click on "Spec" to see the detailed specifications, you'll see that they mention that 512 GB is the largest size officially supported. Here's more detail on the issues with 1TB cards in Viofo dashcams if you're curious. dashcamtalk.com/forum/threads/vortexs-viofo-a329-review.51804/page-2#post-625899

First of all, thank you for the extensive details you have provided. I only have a question: Is there any chance you could do a video to review Nextbase 622gw and Viofo A329 Pro together?
@VortexRadar3 ай бұрын
The 622 is pretty dated at this point. Here’s my review of it: www.vortexradar.com/2020/11/nextbase-622gw-dashcam-review/

Any rumors of the 329 coming out with a 3 channel? I'm currently using a 129 and I'm ready to upgrade but I now want a 3 channel.

The question is that would they be releasing a329 pro or not? And how would a229 pro compare with that. This information might help the customers of not getting sucked into buying a329 as of now and repent later.

I just got my A229 Pro 3 channel a couple of days ago, but I haven't yet installed it. Do you see a 3-channel version coming in the near future, like the A329 Pro? I don't do ride-share, but I like that the interior camera can record the sides of the car, so you have a better all-around recording.

Can you do a review on the Compustar front and rear dash camera? It links to a compustar alarm system or wires independently.

Man viofo is on fire. I like the ssd option. I'm probably still gonna rock with the u3000 even tho thinkware hasnt done jack squat with it no updates i ask them on Instagram any new updates for the u3000 ? I got no reply -__-

I have the A229 Duo and was hoping you'd do a review of this unit!-Thank You Sir!-I'm going to upgrade and as I understand all I have to do is swap out the front and back camera and keep the cables(wires)?

Yep! Cables are all otherwise compatible.

I drive a 19 Jeep Wrangler with a huge Adaptive Cruise Control Box on the already small windshield, and for that reason my local dashcam store recommended the A139 Pro (2 channel). But I heard about all the upgraded features on the A229 Pro and no this A329… Do you find that it would be much of a compromise placing the fronts camera to the passenger side of the ACC box??
@EL-TORO3 ай бұрын
My A329 just arrived today. The white line for the lens is not moved to the new location 🧐 still facing the windshield like the A229

Hopefully they address the choppy, abrupt changes to color balance and exposure that the A229 has. I ended up returning my A229, which was disappointing because my A129 Pro worked great

Your channel/videos are so helpful. How do the two Viofo cameras license plate clarity compare to the Vantrue N4 Pro? I have a Viofo A129 Pro. I'm a little disappointed in it's ability to record license plates and I'm looking to upgrade?

Love the review, I have the A229 Pro 2CH and love it and was getting ready to buy a second A229 Pro but saw the new A329 and wanted to see if I should buy that instead. I know you talked about the A329 fixing problems but I would have like to know what version front/rear software you were running on the pre market version of the A329..
