Viola Beach - What Happened?
Viola Beach were an English indie rock group, formed in Warrington, Cheshire, in 2013. The band's final line-up consisted of Kris Leonard (guitar and vocals), River Reeves (guitar), Tomas Lowe (bass guitar), and Jack Dakin (drums). All four, along with their manager Craig Tarry, died when their car fell from a bridge in Södertälje, Sweden on 13 February 2016
Following analysis of video from a traffic camera, the police offered a description of the events. After the bridge barriers were lowered, two lorries were standing in the right-hand lane of the carriageway and two cars were standing in the left-hand lane, in front of the first set of barriers. The band's car arrived in the left lane, braked and then swerved left, narrowly passing the first car before continuing. The driver in the front stationary car estimated the speed of the band's vehicle at 60 km/h (37 mph). He said their vehicle then drove through both sets of barriers without braking. It subsequently struck the middle section of the bridge, which had been lifted by 1.5 m (4 ft 11 in), and fell 30 m (98 ft) into the canal. It was suggested that the initial impact against the bridge may have been violent enough to cause the death of the car's occupants. The inquest heard that the car's speed was 108 km/h (67 mph) and that manager Tarry was driving. Info from Wikipedia.

You did a fantastic job with this video. It was a tragic accident. Horrible loss of young lifes. I absolutely agree that they might have misread the signs. Thinking it was a warning, if they saw the signs at all. Once they passed the barriers, I agree, they might have thought "railroads", better drive faster to not be crushed by a train. Not knowing it was water below and 25meters, and no train. Absolutely horrible and very sad =(

Yes, it was left hand drive on that rental car. I know, I would have problem to drive on the left side of the road if I had to.

A solid red light means stop in the UK. I do not see the average British person being confused by this. I do not think anyone will ever really know what happened to these poor lads.

Most likely they didn't know about the bridge. Having crashed through the first barrier, the driver panicked and did a hit and run and increased the speed.

nobody drives through two barriers under normal circumstances, maybe the driver was having a heart attack or something, no point blaming Sweden for this, I am a britt that uses that road about 4 times a month, plenty of warnings etc, and traffic standing still, red lights and closed barriers are universal for STOP, you don't need to see the lifted bridge, you just need NOT to drive through barriers, people that knew the driver don't believe it was suicide then maybe it was a heart attack or he got spiked with LSD, horrible thing that happened to them
@paranormalt
@paranormalt Жыл бұрын
The inquest heard no alcohol or drugs was found in the blood of the driver. Post-mortem examinations also showed the four band members had not taken drugs and had only consumed small amounts of alcohol. The driver died of head injuries according to the coroner.

@@paranormalt drugs unusual to Sweden may not be part of the drug screening process, LSD hard to detect anyways, may not have looked for Monkey dust that makes people jump off buildings, or PCP that gives hallucinations, schizophrenic like symptoms and suicidal thoughts, something was missed, I mean what options are there left, demon possession?-of course not

Unless he was going slow at 65mph at the point of the CCTV because he was slowing down for the bridge but had previously been doing 100mph. And one of them was having a heart attack for example. They should have traced the owner of the white car behind and questioned them

Maybe the driver fell asleep at the wheel and had left his cruise control on, I know from driving alot of miles at night that it can be very dangerous. Also I don't understand (unless he was asleep), why his instant reaction to hitting the barrier which would be so loud to stop especially as there are two barriers. I believe he was unconscious and potentially had his foot on the accelerator or as I mentioned had left cruise control on. Such a shame, I wouldn't blame anyone for this issue other than the driver and if he was passed out that is unfortunaly Just an unlucky circumstance. Thoughts to the band r.i.p, I know being in a indie band all I would want to do is make it in the music scene. To be this close and it being tragically taken away from you will always be in my opinion one of the worst things ever.

The strange thing if it was so is that they hit the brakes before the cue and turned to the left to not hit the cars in the cue and according to the driver in one of the cars in the cue they speeded up after hitting the barrier and steered between the next 2 barriers if you understand how I explain it.
@curtbarnes966

@SR Ghost Expeditions so you're saying they broke to miss cars then continued to drive passed all the cars? It sounds like a car fault or a nervous driver Then. I didn't realise they broke before the cars. When you hit a barrier, anyone would begin to break that's the bit that is confusing.
@erdemir5641
@erdemir5641 Жыл бұрын
No nervous driver continues to drive through barriers. First instinct is to brake. Also if the car had a problem like accelerator locked on or cruise control you would see a constant brake light. Also braking or accelerating automatically turns off cruise control on this car. The driver knew exactly what he was doing and it was an absolute emergency of some kind, either the car behind was a major threat or something weird like the film Speed where he couldn't go below 50 mph or the bus would blow up cos of a bomb. Something of that level of importance but the police should have investigated this and there are ways of investigating it to rules things out pretty easily like checking cameras further down the motorway or checking phone texts. The fact the police didn't want to do anything is slightly suspicious and possible that they knew of something or involved or made a mistake in some way

Lots of weak theories out there regarding this...Flashing red lights, stationary traffic, multiple physical impacts and all in a foreign country at night? Very few plausible theories remain aside from intentional behaviour?

Tbh as a foreigner I wouldn't be able to read the warning sign correctly. Very misleading, not clear enough. 2 of 3 warning signs were not working the night of the accident. So... yes, Sweden killed the band. Negligence concerning road signs.
@susanneed6366

'Sweden killed the band'?? Well I would beg to differ, on the video there is clearly several more points of flashing lights other than the ones the woman instructs were not working on the night in question (on all the roadbarriers, on the high beams above the road, along with the electronic displays of red-crosses) even given the potential loss of rightside view due to stationary lorries. So to notice this was a road section to pay extra attention to was extremely clear, I'd say (which they seem to have done and indeed stopped). That the repeated symbol for 'bridge-opening' - electronic and stationary reflective road-signs - along the road was not acknowledged, extremely unfortunate and tragic but however cannot be blamed on Sweden, but falls on the responsibilaty of each driver & road traveller to adhere to accordingly, on any country's road, swedish as on british ones I suspect. Mistaken it for a railway crossing does make sense as a possibility. Though, why they would decide to take the chance to still cross it given all other vehicles already arrived and waiting and the albeit clear continuously flashing-lights (as can be seen on the actual footage) seems daring if not reckless. So very tragic however the circumstances. RiP

Tiffy Tattoo we foreigners here are not stupid, signs, lights, traffic standing still and closed barriers mean stop in any country, there are plenty of warnings, Sweden did not kill them, something else did, even something as simple as fainting from exhaustion and pressing the gas pedal may have done it

Hello. Do you happen to know what time their plane was leaving? What the driver did was intentional but there was something very important about getting through that bridge that is not related to being late (otherwise they would have been driving faster on the motorway). They HAD to get through that bridge to be on time for something, an absolute emergency or paramount importance. Or they were in extreme danger by stopping, I.e. there was a hitman in the car behind. I don't believe that train explanation, you would just brake whilst going up the side of the cars and before hitting the barrier, that is your first instinct in an accident. He HAD to get through that barrier no matter what. So do you happen to know if they were late for the plane? If so that flight was extremely important for some reason

My thoughts too, and I really looked into it. I tried to find out more about the car that was FOLLOWING them before the bridge. Look at kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4aco2lmr9Cpq6c after 8:04 in the video. The people in car behind was not among the people that was heard after the accident. 2013 there was a controversial police car chase accident involving 2 20-year old men who was killed when they drove off a open bridge not far away from Stockholm. omni.se/efter-hjulstabron-polisen-andrar-biljaktsregler/a/18bc6f8b-f3d8-4457-b811-85d44bf8556b The police ordered to open Hjulsta bridge to stop them. They did not stop and both died. This bridge opening was not because of the police ordering it. But what if it was an unmarked police car that was behind them? Why can't we find the witness statement from that car?

Do you know if the police tried to find the driver of that car behind or checked their mobile phone usage/texts? Have you tried to contact the police? The way the police responded so slowly or didn't seem to care was also a bit suspicious but maybe Swedish police are a bit like that. I'm English but was working for scania in södertälje when it happened. That bridge was right next to my apartment and walked under it every night. I also looked into if they would be rushing to hospital but I think there is a hospital on the route they were travelling before the bridge, you come off at that junction and there is a hospital there but not sure
