Thank you so much for this detailed explanation. What stood out to me most was: contact point is as important as intonation. We should think about which contact point we are using for the color we are trying to play.

I follow your master class thow I´m a begginer. I´m a street violinist. I mean I play in tghe streets to earnb some pesos. I earn a promedio de 100 pesos an hour. It is about 5 american dollars. I play Pachelbel canon in D, Eine kleine nach music, a Bach´s Bourree in G, and some other classical pieces, I began to learn the violin at the age of fifty with a profesional woman violinist. She is an american who did study in the USA. she did teach me some basic things. But she teach us more repertory than tecnique in her little strings orchestra. I like your videos cause I learn a lot from you.I thank to you. I´m a mexican I was born and live in Cuernava Morelos Mexico. Mark is my alias for Marco my real name. Nowdays I´m 59 years old. Miguel, my son, began at five with the violin but now he has lost the few love for violin he had, and fall in love with his celular phone and batlle games in internet. I thught to enrroll him in the local professional violin academy but I´m must motivated than him to join it. My son is almost 13 years old ¿ how coul I motivate him?

I sympathize with you. The video games and the smartphones ruin people... The one thing you may tell him that if we he plays the violin he would become smarter in the games as the violin teaches problem-solving, enlarges memory, and will make him more versatile and hard to beat. Plus, by playing the violin, he would meet many more beautiful girls than the geeks who only sit in front of the computers :)))

A review of how to keep bow parallel would be much appreciated! My arms are kind of short, and even with elbow extension at the tip of the bow, it's difficult for me to play in that area of the bow without feeling some strain in my arm muscles. Also, do you have any suggestions for switching contact points seamlessly? Pinchas Zukerman said once that he intentionally initiates bows in a certain direction (for example, bowing out on a down bow to slide closer to fingerboard) but it's hard for me to execute that smoothly. Thank you always for your videos!
@ViolinClassUSA
@ViolinClassUSA 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks - I will add this point to my next video about the bow. Mr. Zukerman is correct about the bow direction helping to change contact points. All finer points of violin technique are hard to achieve at first so patience and perseverance are our best friends :)

Thank you Prof. Bushkova for this useful video. When my son plays, many times his teacher mentioned that he has "slip tones" -- does this have something to do with the contact points as well? And do you have any suggestion on how to correct this? I also look forward about playing parallel to the bridge. Thank you in advance!
@ViolinClassUSA
@ViolinClassUSA 5 жыл бұрын
I do not understand what "slip tones" are... Every teacher's vocabulary is very different. Does s/he mean, not enough contact of the bow with the string that produces a sort of "whistly" sound? Sorry I cannot help if I do not get the question...

Why not simplify the 5 contact points down to 3? between fingerboard and bridge as 1, slightly towards fingerboard as 2 and 3 is slightly towards bridge? Less dynamic and colourful but easier to manage?
@ViolinClassUSA
@ViolinClassUSA 4 жыл бұрын
Well, at first, we are just happy to be able to draw a bow on ONE contact point - No. 3! As we play better, 3 contact points could be used for intermediates. 5 contact points are for much more advanced players. And then we use 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, 4.5, and so forth contact points as well :) Precision is the key.

Hi professor , where are the contact points for artificial harmonics ? are contact points the same for four strings or not ?which point is better for each string ? thank you from Iran
@ViolinClassUSA
@ViolinClassUSA 5 жыл бұрын
For all artificial harmonics, use stronger Contact Points. CPs always change depending on: 1) thickness of the string 2) length of the string 3) dynamics

Why do you number in that order? 1 ponticello 5 sultasto
@ViolinClassUSA
@ViolinClassUSA 5 жыл бұрын
It is a good question, Guillermo, thanks! 1 - Right BEFORE sul ponticello and 5 right BEFORE sul tasto. When I invented the system - back in my Interlochen-teaching-days -I first numbered the points the other way around (5 was nearest the bridge, 1 - nearest the fingerboard; 3 stayed in the middle, of course). Back then, I was coming from the Russian school system of grading (or marks): In the school, our 'A' was '5' and our 'F' was "1" (the weakest). Then a couple of years later, I read a good book by Carl Flesch, and he was talking about the contact points there, but in the reverse order. After the initial celebration ('great minds think alike' and such), I decided to reverse MY numbers as well so that I could then send my students to read Carl Flesch (if they ever felt like doubting me!)
