Scleroderma caused the heart and lungs of my mother to harden causing secondary pulmonary hypertension. This is what caused her death. What's so strange is that her skin was affected only on the hands and she lived only 3 years after diagnosis. Most people will have skin hardening all over and live years with this disease. It's been 11 years since passed at age 54 and there is still no real, effective treatment to stop disease progression...just management of symptoms.

This is my first year working, but not in residency already, as we only choose next month (I’m so nervous and excited at the same time!).
