Viper Jet with huge 90mm ducted fan rockin the sky

This time Mat was on the sticks to fly his brand new Taft Hobby Viper Jet. As usual, onboard recording of the flying has been done with very simply attaching the GoPro 3 with some fiberglass reinforced tape to the tail. You can see how its done when fast forwarding to the very end of the vid. We needed to move the 6S Battery slightly more into the front to level out the Center of Gravity taking into consideration the additional weight of the cam. The GoPro has had indeed some minor impact on the flight characteristics especially when performing rolls with the Jet, but neither take off nor real flight was really impacted.
Some reviews on the Jet:
- Servos are metal gear compared to most of the other brands. We experienced a lot that servos quit during flight when not being manufactured with metal gear. Especially on the no name brands.
- The Sound is absolutely stunning! Almost like you would fly a real turbine
- Weight ratio is approx. 1:1 which allows you to do vertical climbs easily
- Overall appearance is excellent given the relatively small price
- Dampers are included in the retracts, again: not common in this price class
- In the video you see that we had a small problem with the sequencer for the retracts. This is normal and can be corrected easily when putting D/R for Gear to the max.

That was FANTASTIC!!! A well set-up jet (I really like the functioning gear doors), well flown and interesting footage, too. I normally fast forward to the end of flight vids just to see the landing, but your whole flight was interesting. Taft sure got this plane right, as did you. The gear struts work well, and the retract mounts are solid. 10/10!

No issues so far. Retracts are excellent. If you don't get them out than just put D/R on GEAR to 150% on both sides.

This bird is screaming to be an FPV ship.... Think how fast it would go without the Gopro brick mod! Mint landing by the way trickled back some power to counter the bounce. NICE skills.

Would guess approx. 150kmh and yes the wheels are good enough to take off on a grass runway. We tested that successfully on Sunday. With respect to the expo I would say start with -25% on aileron and elevator but this is always a feel-thing.

It would probably be better to mount the camera in the cockpit or a nose mount of some sort with a clear nose cone. The view in that belly mount is great, but the turbulence created must be a lot. Enough to negate any aerodynamic benefit of the ventral strakes I would think.

Awesome video. How often do the retracts 'not come out', they look really strong with suspension and all, are they as good as they look? Edit-- read the rest of your replies, seem strong! What was that about the locktite on wheel screw? I have had to do that on a lot of planes! Is that for all three wheels or only the front? Would running this on a Dx6i and a AR600 DSMX be alright or does it regularly fly out of 1km range?

STOCK setup, zero issues so far after 60 flights. Use Locktite on the wheelscrew...

What do you mean you put gear D/R to the Max?

Depending on your transmitter and the D/R rates out of the box, sometimes you experience that gear is not opening or closing. You need to adjust the D/R rates from 100% to 150% to make it work.
