I shot a trailer for these guys up in Washington state back in 2006. It was to be submitted to discovery channel as a TV series documentary series following the brothers as they assembled the airplanes as well as kit builders who bought one. I can see little snippets from my video that I made in this KZbin video. 😊

I was sitting in the desert in Iraq when I received the copy of Popular Science with Bede's latest creation. I liked it so much I wondered how I could ever afford to fly one - and came up with a notion for commercializing something similar. Even reached out to Burt Rutan, who said they could build a prototype (but they would not get involved in the certification). Well, not being wealthy I did not pursue it. But, it would have been just as fun as flying Phantoms!

To be honest, half a million for a plane with that kind of performance is an absolute bargain. a 10.000ft/minute climb rate is essentially the same speed as freefalling due to gravity, but in the opposite direction. I can't imagine what a thrill it would be. To those saying buy an L-39, it had 1/3 the climb speed of this beast. It's a completely different animal.

Somebody should recreate the Me 163 as a kitplane. Replace the rocket motor with a small jet. Put air intakes in the leading edge at the wing roots. T/off and landing on a fuselage-mounted wheel, plus strakes on the wings as with gliders. Laser-scan the fuselage and wings of a Me 163 in a museum. The flight characteristics of the 163 are well-known, from a dead-stick glider all the way to 500mph. The new 163 would sell well, as the cheapest way to acquire a warbird.

A gas turbine (as in a turbojet or turbofan) is a *combustion* engine. What did you think the fuel did in the combustion chambers? A gas turbine - in its normal form such as used in aircraft - is even an _internal_ combustion engine, because the combustion in inside the engine, in the working fluid (air) flow. A gas turbine engine is not a *piston* engine, which is the term which should have been used. The difference is that combustion is continuous in a turbine engine, and inherently interrupted in a piston engine.

It is even less simple than that… The guy with too much money… Has enough mechanical skill to build… Or has even more money to have somebody else build it… Doesn’t want to own the A model. Nobody wants to fly the A model… Few would want to fly the first 10 serial numbers of the B model either… Personally, my preference is to own one that is a decade old, with 1k hrs on it already… Infant mortality of new airplanes is a real thing… having a failure of the engine will cost a mint. Landing in a field at high speeds is going to be uncomfortable…. So Viper team…. Get started! I want to buy one 10years from now…. From somebody that has done the break-in flights…. 😃

Not worth the money. Like someone said a person can buy a L-29 or L-39. The L-29 can be re-engined with a more powerful engine. While the jets are classified as “EXPERIMENTAL” they are a proven design and many of them are out there burning up the airways on the weekends. I’d much rather have an L-39!
