Do you switch the plugs in the skimmer when you open it? I have two holes and the gizmo was on the hole by the pool

2 Things. And I should explain this in my opening videos. ONE: Do you have 2 lines or more going to the front of your pool pump? TWO: Do you have a main drain on the bottom of the pool? If you don't have a drain in the pool, don't remove the second plug in the skimmer. If you have a main drain, take the plug out. BUT. The main drain is a common failing point when closing for the winter and it could be blocked off because it has broke in the past.

The sand filter gauge needs to be removed every winter?

If it's on good shape, yes. Sometimes we can't take them off because the valve is cracked where it screws in. If the pressure gauge is over tightened it will crack the valve. So an epoxy is used and that's when you can't replace.
