As a HGV Driver in the UK, trucking across the country delivering plant machinery can be challenging especially when its down tight, narrow county lanes.
Join mean as I take you along, showing you the challenges that I face on a day to day basis and what I have to do to ovecome them.
If you enjoy the content dont forget it give it a like and why not leeve a comment asking any questions you have about becoming HGV Driver and life on the road.

Thanks for sharing. I found the first video really interesting (and also very well made, clearly and concisely delivered - not easy to do!). I guess it’s not surprising that you’ve had such a strong reaction and wider coverage. All good for the channel! Personally, I appreciate you taking the time to share the info. What someone earns is such a personal and relative thing. Keep the videos coming. I really enjoy your channel. Cheers and all the best.

@@AshleyHaleUK thanks for the reply. A few things I’m interested in: how to choose a training provider. Seems to be a big choice where I live and quite a variance in price. What should I look for? Maybe you could talk about how you chose yours? I’d like to know more about the Taco. Does your employer provider a card? How does it work? What re the dos and donts? On a more personal note, you look in good shape. How do you manage the health aspects of being a HGV driver? Diet? Exercise? Keeping active in general? What are the ‘top 5’ skills to master when you’re starting out (appreciate depends on load etc)? I’m also really keen to know about the choice of trucks you have at work ( asked about this in a previous comment) what the differences are between each make, do you have a preference? How is the truck kept clean (especially inside as I think you mentioned someone else drives your truck too?)? What are the essentials you take with you for tramping? What’s your nighttime set up like? How easy did you find it to adapt to sleeping in the truck? Sorry that’s quite a long list but you did ask! Just applied for my license and hope to start my training in the next month. Final one is would you recommend doing the class 1 test first time, or start with the class 2 and then work up to the class 1? I’ve understood you can go straight from car to class 1 now but have read plenty of comments that this is not necessarily a good idea. Thanks again and hope there’s one or two things from my list that are helpful. Cheers!

@@mrb4211 I'm doing my course through a government scheme where it's all paid for, I don't have to pay a thing. Doing mine through a company called Hughes driving training!!!! Will be really worth you looking them up and give them a call. I've not had to pay a single penny, not even my medical. Hurry though cause I'm not sure how long the scheme is lasting for. They've been excellent by the way and very helpful. Hope this helps out.

Nice video. Im doing a Class 1 too but to be honest the payment is terrible t. Been doing same day national deliveries with a van for last 4 years and on a very good day i can make a weekly wage of a HGV. So for me- there are money but the big logistics company keep them as a profit and prefer to pay what everyone else pays and keep it as low as possible.

Tramping is a mute point as many people commute during the week to earn a living. I was in the RAF for 30 years before leaving and started Tramping, I spent more time away from the family in the armed forces and class1 driving is the easiest job I have ever had. Your vlogs were spot on.

Well done for your first video. I'm not one to subscribe to HGV driver channels but you came up and found it very interesting indeed. As a HGV driver myself I can see a lot of your points. It all comes down to personal preference and if you want to earn a lot you can do. Personally myself I don't enjoy the job very much but just see it as a means to earn money. I work 4 shifts a week and earn around 40k which is more than enough to support my household. I've done nights out etc but it's the unpaid downtime I didn't like. Hope to see more from you sometime

I'm currently shunting for one of the parcel companies and we have 8 shunters on my shift and each of us are doing 80 to 120 trailer movies a day. Some saying shunting is difficult and with so many moves even more difficult but for me it is easy and I really like it, keeps me off the road and I don't need to deal with silly drivers.

I did a bit of shunting during Covid, I agree about the not having drivers to deal with and it was great to know when you were finishing, but they gave me a radio and I had 4 different department calling for trailers and for some reason they always seemed to want them at the same time and the factory had a one way system so I'd drop a trailer on one bay then have to drive round the factory to pick up a trailer from a bay a hundred meters away. I'd rather be on a run through Europe. But different jobs suit different people.
@J_I_Was
@J_I_Was Ай бұрын
@medler2110 we have so many shunters that doing it on a radio is impossible, so everything is done online. We all have tablets log in, and each of us is getting jobs assigned, so in that sense, it is quite good.
@medler2110
@medler2110 Ай бұрын
@@J_I_Was sounds better managed, this was a food factory, it used to have 2 shunters, but dropped to 1, so it got hectic. I think the night shunter had a quieter life. However it kept the pennies coming until I got back in my normal work.

1:31, just a point you can't opt out of the 48 hour average or max 60 (working) hours, on the WTD for Road transport. You can extend the reference period from 17 to 26 weeks with a workforce agreement and opt out of the 10 hour night working regulation with a workforce agreement. But you are right most people not involved in haulage, and some that are judging by the DCPC classes I've had to sit through, don't realise there is a difference between duty time, working time and driving time. And it doesn't matter how much you earn as a truck driver there is always someone who'll comment that they earn more for less hours, but they never actually prove it.
@AshleyHaleUK
@AshleyHaleUK Ай бұрын
You are 100%. When recording these videos you get so much in your head it comes out wrong. Then I didn't notice what I had said when editing. Opting out of the 10hrs at night is almost needed in lost jobs especially trunking. When your on holiday it's a 48 he week that is used to calculate towards your 17 or 26 week average. Which way less than the 12-15 hours days we typically do which is why it helps for lowering it. Never had any issues with my WTD over the 26 weeks, just the odd 6hr rule broken when loading took ages.

Most people dont know that if u waiting in a yard or delivery adress ie 4 hours or 5 hours or loading a Truck it does not count as driving time on the tacho it should automatic switch to other work....so you never really go over u 55 hours

I never understand when people say, "Driving is hard job." If your job is hard, you've got an HGV class 1 license. Find another job. There are plenty of driving jobs. If you've got a class 1 license, you aint gonna be out of work for long.

I guess you also got a lot of jealousy. Since that video on your wages. You asked me to let you know how my first week of tramping and driving a car transporter goes. Well it's been a hard week learning something completely different which has a lot of safety factors to it. It's not a case of jumping in a truck and going and learning the tachograph. I'm a fresher and got my licence a couple of weeks ago, so I need to get use to driving a bigger truck, with more weight, doing more reversing and parking in difficult places and get the cars off. Although difficult and frustrating at times, especially with reversing cars up on top of the truck, I'm enjoying it and look forward to getting the knack of it and it becoming 2nd nature. Just as for the tramping, but they say absence makes the heart grow fonder. I look forward to seeing my wife when she's free too. But we have a 5yr plan to head for.
