I hope she is collecting frequent flyer miles for these trips. I used to go out once every 6 weeks or so for a large dinner and beers with my friends when I lived in NY. After I moved to Florida, I realized I could still hangout with my friends and I was saving money as well. I would fly in in the afternoon and leave on the first flight the next morning. Flight costs ran about $120 RT Spending $120 every 6 weeks was cheaper than NYS taxes.

One day a week? No brainer. Its probably cheaper to fly from anywhere in the country (Hawaii and Alaska excepted) to Newark once a week than it is to sublet in New York for 3 months. Even from my house in the west it's less than a $200 round trip flight, then $30 for the train into the city. Rent is definitely $1000+ cheaper here. Plus no moving expenses and lower cost of living. Totally worth it.

People commenting have no clue how rent works. Rent for a 12 month lease is about $2000 but for 3mos it'll probably be $3000 because its short term. This is an internship not a permanent job. Plus she's traveling once a week and lives with her parents. She's saving most of her stipend.

Even if she's renting, she can't stop renting for 10 weeks. What she's doing cost less than renting almost anywhere. She's also counting some expenses that she might have even if she didn't travel (I would say she should only count half the cost of food and other expenses). She's also saving the hassle of figuring out living in a new place for just weeks. She even said that she wouldn't do it if it was a full time job. Also that way she doesn't have to be away of her family and friends. There is more to the equation than money. I've worked abroad once for 3 months and stayed st a hotel payed for by the job. It wasn't that fun (the pay was worth it, though). That's just stupid journalism. They look for outlier cases to get some shocking news.

That tells you how fucked up the system is when plane flights for her are cheaper than rent by almost half. Persoally, when I travel, I do cost effectiveness of driving versus flying. Typically for the cheapest flights, I'm driving an hour to 90 minutes to any of of the airports since my regional airport costs a fortune to fly from and it connects to the airports 90 minutes away anyway. But typically, I end up driving because its cheaper for me to drive for gas + wear and tear on the car.

Okay what happens to the concept “time is money” all the prep time and travel time can also be counted towards the cost of her lifestyle choice to travel vs. rent in the city/state!
