I had viral meningitis and encephalitis nearly 6 years ago and can so strongly relate to this story. I experienced complete devastation of the life I had built. I am still hurting and still struggle daily. I try very hard to focus on healing and learning and growing. Some days I almost lose hope that I'll ever make a full recovery but I always search for and find the achievements I've made with little to no support at times. I am just recovering from bacterial meningitis. I was misdiagnosed and sent home. I was dying and they didn't know. I started fading, really fast. I went into a coma and septic shock. My case was really bad, I had a 10 percent chance of living. I'm glad I'm here, but the after effects are so frustrating. I lost feeling in my right (dominant) hand. Apart from just that, I had to relearn how to read, write, sit, stand, speak, eat, hold things, use the bathroom the list goes on. During the infection, a very small portion of my brain that controls feeling shut down. Which is what caused my hand to become numb. I'll never get it back again.

I had viral meningitis was I was 17 yrs old. At the time I had a young daughter and living with my mom. One day I woke up one day with a massive headache, my neck was stiff, I could hardly lift head and light made it 10xs more painful. My mother thought that I had stayed up late, she was a little annoyed that she had been caring for my baby while I slept all day. So I got up and forced myself to care for her. The next day wasn't any better, medicine didn't work, rest didn't work. Day three I told my mom something is wrong, this doesn't feel like anything I've felt before. She reluctantly took me to the ER. This was during the westnile outbreak and apparently that had similar symtoms, so Dr did a spinal tap. When results came in, I was diagnosed with viral meningitis. I was discharged after the diagnosis, I don't remember what the exact treatment was, but I know within a couple weeks I was much better. I feel there's a chance my memory may have been affected, however I've had a couple concussions since then so I take that into consideration. Anyway it's a terrible thing to go through, I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

I was diagnosed with Viral Meningitis in the early hours of Sunday October 20th, 2019. I had a headache earlier that Saturday, around noon. I went to bed with a headache that night but, took some ibuprofen liqui-gels. I woke up at like 3am with a super bad headache that felt different. It felt like my scalp was tightening towards the top and back of my head. I debated going to the hospital. Then, I threw up and knew this was something different. So, my partner took me to the emergency room in London, Ontario here in Canada. A nurse took my temperature and said I had a fever. I was then sent to another waiting area to be seen by a doctor. After about 20 minutes or more, I was put in a temporary bed and examined by two doctors. After they were done, I saw them talking for a few minutes. Then, the younger one came back and said he had a hunch and wanted to do a spinal tap. He did that and I waited for the results. I was pretty drowsy but, he came back about 30 minutes later and said my white blood cell count in the spinal fluid was 15,000 and that I had meningitis. He said they weren't sure if it was viral or bacterial but, they were doing more tests to find out. I was immediately admitted and put in a room on the emergency floor. They hooked me up to an I.V. with saline and eventually anti-viral and anti-bacterial medicines. I couldn't sleep, because each time I laid down, the pain would shift to whatever side my head was down. The next day I was moved upstairs to another floor and they continued with the anti-viral and anti-bacterial medicines. That was the first time I was able to get some sleep... for about 45 minutes. Then, some people came around to allow me to vote from the hospital, because we were in a federal election. Then, shortly after that, a group of doctors came to see me. The were amazed that I had the intuition and realization that my headache had been different and I decided to go to the hospital. They said, if I hadn't, things could have been a lot worse! Later that day, I was moved to yet another room. I was a double occupancy room but, only had one bed and I had the room to myself! It even had a shower! I spent two nights in that room and had a PIC line installed before I was discharged, so I could administer meds from home. They sent me home around 2:30pm on Wedensday October 23rd, 2019. My headaches were gone but they sent me a home care nurse and they delivered meds to my house, which she showed me how to administer. For 2 or 3 days, I had to have a pump hooked up to me 24/7 that dispensed the anti-viral meds. I also had to take these little pressurized balls of anti-bacterial medicine, that looked like Christmas ornaments, and hook them up to my PIC LINE once in the morning and once in the evening. They would slowly deflate as they administered the meds. After that, I had to flush my PIC line with a saline solution each time. I did that for about a week and a half, before I was told I could stop. I could have returned to my factory job then but, ran into trouble getting a Return to Work letter. I finally got one from a new family doctor I had just found. But, I was off work for a total of 4 weeks. Since then, I've felt fine and count myself as pretty lucky. I haven't really felt any side-effects from the viral meningitis. *However, I might be now. It's now June 2020 and hasn't been quite a year since my experience. And, lately I've been having strange headaches again. I'll have them either right before bed or, when I wake up in the morning. But, these are just light headaches. There's no feeling of my scalp tightening. But, there are other factors to consider. I've been laid off work for 3 months now. And, I recently just had Carpal Tunnel surgery on my left hand. So, I've had to stop my daily exercise routine of going on my treadmill for an hour a day. So, that might be it. I am 47 years old though and notice that if I eat a lot of sugar in the evening, I'll get headaches at night or in the morning. I think that's just a fact of getting older and needing to lay off the sugar. But, I've had several days of headaches now so, I always wonder. I read that a relapse of meningitis is very rare. So, I hope that isn't the case. I guess I'm typing all this out to relieve the stress of that idea.

i had menengites at the age of 4 and left me half deaf with fatigue and sometimes tired legs. I am usually exhausted to work full time and when I was at school I almost always skipped a day. It never leaves you without long term damage. If I have something happening in the week I kind have to reserve my energy or else am bound to fall sick or tired. Low mood and depression is also part of the long term condition.

I was diagnosed 7 years ago. Since then Ive battled daily migraines, fatigue, and memory loss. I take 100mg twice daily of topiramate, 100mg twice daily of sumatriptan, 1000mg daily excedrine, and fluoxetine. My ears constantly feel like they’re burning and audiology has said I have a 15% decrease in my hearing in the last two years. I also have memory loss. I’ll be in the middle of a sentence and forget what I was talking about.

I was diagnosed in 2003 at the age of 13. I lived with the symptoms for nearly 2 weeks, as my mother did not take me seriously when I began to complain about the debilitating headaches. I went about my schooling in a constant haze, in pain, and extremely fatigued. It was only when I began to come home after school and cry myself to sleep, that she decided something actually may be wrong. A spinal tap confirmed it. I am now 32 years old and am convinced that it, along with several serious concussions, has contributed to a myriad of issues I now have that weren’t present before. All of which have worsened as I’ve aged. I began to notice cognitive decline and memory issues in high school. What used to come easy to me-school work, testing, focusing and engaging-suddenly became a struggle. In my early 20s, I was diagnosed with major depressive disorder, anxiety, ADHD, PTSD, and was told that I expressed “borderline personality traits.” I was later diagnosed with bipolar disorder. I’ve been on medication after medication, and none of them work for me. Essentially, I feel like a part of me has been stripped away and I’m now a shell of the person I used to be. Maybe meningitis is only one part of the cause, but I am strangely relieved to (maybe) have a bit of an explanation as to why I took a psychological turn in my life.

Happened to me the same year, I was 9 years old. I’m still struggling with life and trying to figure out why i basically feel how you do. I feel like I’m not who I should be or want to be. Physically I’m here, but mentally and emotionally there’s no juice. I smoke to calm what I assume are overstimulated nerves. Everyday I want to die, but I also want to live. I feel like I just take up space. I have a mental block that doesn’t allow me to get motivated or stay focused enough to learn different things. Basically for some reason I’m not even 30 & I feel like a old person. I enjoy life, but I can’t do much of anything. I sometimes space out for a few seconds or minutes. I’d rather be dead, because I realize I’m just getting older and this shit has really stopped me from finding my own lane in life. I feel like I can’t even appreciate the time I have or the loved ones that take care of me now cause I’m so stuck in my head. If I were to outlive them, I’d end up homeless. People gonna assume I’m a drug addict or lazy cause you can’t see mental illness and when we speak on that topic the idea people have is of somebody with some obvious indicator. I’ve always thought I had shit wrong with me.

Wow Bro I could read more on what u have to say just by the wording alone in ur reply...I'm here because for the last few days I been having headaches that don't seem to go away, the only relief I get is laying my head on something hard like a coffee mug or cannister...but reading through the comments it all makes sense...like just the other day went to use my debit card in a store put in my pin and it didn't go through, it wasn't till the 3 or 4th try I realized I was putting in the wrong pin 👀.... Sad part is doctors be claiming to know a whole lot bout everything but somehow ain't got a cure for a damn thing these days, they 1st thing is to throw us on medications that even come with more side effects 😑

I just got Meningitis back in March of this year. Was in the hospital for 2 months. Had a relapse of it. Had 4 Lumbar Punctures, turned out it was a mild bacterial Meningitis that turned into Viral, and later Chronic Meningitis. I'm slowly making a recovery from it. However I am experiencing fatigue, dizziness, and I have headaches or migraines on the right side, I also have a stiff neck a lot. There are days I feel well and think I am better, but then I end up getting hit by everything all at once. Lately my hands have been tingling a lot like they are asleep. I hope these after effects go away soon. It is really having a major impact on my job and life. A lot of people and doctors think I am faking or don't want to believe me which is very frustrating. Thankfully I have a boss that understands and my family members know what I have gone through and am still going through. I know when I do get dizzy or have headaches my face turns red and I can't fake that.

He essentially told me I'm lucky to be alive. However, he is going to do everything he can to either try and make these symptoms go away or make them less.

Thank you for sharing your story. It is imperative that those suffering get an early diagnosis and treatment. You are very fortunate that your doctor saw the signs and ordered the tests and that you received support after that fact. It's wonderful that your husband supported you through this and I can imagine he had to do extra parenting as well. Sickness is not anyone's fault and is not failure. However, I wasn’t feeling well one day I couldn’t eat, My meals got down to smoothies. My head became heavy, driving behind the shell was difficult I thought it was looking at the screen to much I had just started college August 3,2017 ....make along story short my Pcp wouldn’t listen to me on a August 13,2017 all she did was blood work ..I waited until the blood work came my Pcp called on August 19,2017 and said your wbc was 12,000 and your vitamin d is low , I don’t really think there’s anything wrong with it . She said I feel maybe it’s your vitamin d making you feel that way. I just couldn’t accept that answer! That same day at 6:00 pm I arrived at my mother’s job to pick her from work , I could barely drive. We get home at 9pm I’m very sick and light headed , and throwing up... fever is 100.6. My parents say your going to hospital I say “no” I’ll go in the morning I’m just having a stomach virus or something.... August 20,2017 I’m er I find out I’m diagnose with viral spinal meningitis and my wbc double over the weekend to 24,000 I spent almost a week in a half in hospital and till this day my body has not recovered. I went the hair salon to receive a style to only be my hair is damaged I had lose half of my hair due to being sick!

Oh my God!! I was fine, playing with my model airplane when I was 12. Got a bit of a headache, and woke up in the hospital 7 days later. That was 1986. It took years to find out it was Meningitis. Since then I have suffered crippling migraines. After that, I was diagnosed with ADD and put on Ritalin, from 13 to 15, then Adderall, from 15 to 18. Now I am realizing ADD and ADHD is a common side effect of Meningitis. I guess at 45, it's not too late to talk to a neurologist.

25 years ago I had viral meningitis. The doctor came. Said 'take asprin' and left me to it. No help, no treatment. I was pretty much unconscious for six weeks. I felt totally forsaken. I cannot describe the terrible pain. I had a headache for nearly five years afterwards, but had to live my life as if nothing was wrong. I went to work, continued surviving. Today I know viral meningitis has had a long term effect, but no one wants to know! I'm definitely not the person I was, if I mention how I feel I'm told 'not still going on about that, are you?' I do think more information should be out there, as much as the bacterial form receives. One might not loose limbs, but the loss of person, of memories, of vitality is as relevant.

Listening yo your story amplifies just how lucky I was..Christmas week 2001..i was 31..suffered same pain,,but passed it off as proper man flu..went to work none the less hoping it would pass..as I was delivering white goods for John Lewis..My strength wasnt there..so I went home and slept till next morning...when my Girlfriend saw my hands and feet covered in purple rash...within the hour I was rushed to hospital and given a 50-50 chance of survival...I was unconscious for 3 days,Told I had the bacterial with septicaemia ..I had been caught in time..kept my limbs and hearing etc..but wow did it take it outta my body...I was walking like an old man..lost 2 stone in 7 days thru vomiting etc..John Lewis were amazing..full pay for as long as it took,and a bouquet of flowers every month..After 6 months I went back,,but they insisted i had aid..brilliant company...Although I had heard Bacterial is more serious than Viral,,,it would explain my lethargy since the illness,,which i had put down to my laziness...so thank you for your video,,,,,big thanks to the doctors and nurses at Milton Keynes hospital that saved my life ..

I will get my wife to write her experience once she hopefully comes back from hospital. I wont give any advice as i am not a doctor. Almost 4 weeks ago she had covid positive and got over it 10 days . A week after she started saying she is having headaches and pains around her neck and ears . Then she went to the gp and she has given oral antibiotics and pain killers and told to go back home which I really think she shouldn't have been sent back home but as everyone is aware hospitals are super full at these days. Day after her mother took her to hospital and they gave her iv ,antibiotics and sent her back home ! A day later she was very poorly . Constant headache and swelling around neck and ears. Now she is in hospital day 5 and she is having horrible headaches. She is always feeling tired and feeling sick . Doctors done head ct scan and took blood test and they are saying this is viral menenjitis. As I said before I will get her write all her experience on here . I am so appreciated that ppl are sharing their experiences.

Very interesting you had a problem with your left ear and not both ears. I had viral meningitis and same thing my right ear. Tinnitus was really bad at first but after a couple years much better but still there. But tolerable during the day a little noisey at night. Weird only the left ?

I had meningitis as a baby and almost died from it, I don't know if there's a link between this and that but I could see I'm a lot "slower" than a lot of kids, especially socially, academically I was average but I definitely struggled and still struggle to socialize and fit in, I'm also very prone to depression and anxiety, I think I'm too sensitive to sound but I don't know if that's related.

Hi I also had meningitis as a baby, I’m 33 now and have actively been fending off depression/anxiety for last 5 years or so. I also felt like I never fitted in, still don’t tbh. It’s only just occurred to me recently that meningitis might be the reason… then i see these comments this 1 in particular and it’s like I’m reading my own comment lol this needs to be looked into, people like us have been forgotten about as we have gotten over the immediate effects of the disease but long term has clearly got some negative effects too

There might actually be a link between meningitis and mental illnesses like depression. I had it when I was just a baby and recovered just fine but I don't know if my mental health issues are related to meningitis

​@@dant883Hello sorry I'm replying now but I didn't see this comment until I came and watched this video again. Yes absolutely. Most people talk about the hearing loss meningitis can cause but they never consider the mental illnesses it might also cause. And your comment isn't the first one I see that I can relate to. Who knows, maybe it is the cause. I will keep doing more research but I haven't found a lot of information.

Since spinal meningitis everything mentally is hard and I get these random tremors. Math is difficult and every job I have had has been so difficult people notice I am mentally diff and this is where life get hard people dont understand when you dont think like them.

I was 13 when I was diagnosed with viral meningitis and the doctors just thought it was a flu at first so it went on until it reached the 3rd week when they finally found out what it was. Is it possible that it could change behavior and sleeping patterns? I used to have so much energy, but since that happened I am constantly tired I was diagnosed with Chronic fatigue syndrome because they couldn't find anything wrong I was just wondering if that could be a reason that I never have energy anymore

MikaGinelle when I was a little girl I got shocked by electricity really bad and I was pulled out of a sink and just put in a room and never got treated for it but I almost died I was all purple about a week later I end up getting really really sick and now I was just put in a room in a dark room and I never really got taken to the hospital until it got so bad I couldn't breathe I was really really bad and I was taken to emergency and they admitted me and I was put in the hospital for a few months the doctor told my mom that I wasn't going to make it and I had brain damage well now I have not been able to read or write I'm very I forget I I can't retain for very long keep my memory going unless I'm fresh doing it all the time it's affecting me don't know where to get help

Hi, the after effects of meningitis can last months or even years. Let your brother know that this is normal and to not try to push himself too much, too soon. The brain has been through significant trauma so after effects are very common. Hannah

Hi, I had a painful headache last week Tuesday, I went to the hospital, ran some test and unfortunately they found out that am infected with viral manengitis, today its my 6th day at hospital and the doctors says I can go home, my body will fight the virus on its own and I should be fine in 3 weeks time, am still young😭 and scared of the pains that I go through when the headache starts, I don't even know how I will cope without antibiotics😢... I just want to go back to my normal state, like for God's sake I have an LLB degree to complete, I have people to make proud😭, Please meningitis don't destroy the dream of a black child, I have done you nothing 😭
