Montefusco1 is correct: though Joplin's (and other) rags are usually played as fast as possible, Joplin was insistent that rag is to be played slowly and carefully. It's about syncopation and melody composition, not speed. This isn't to say that I don'ty enjoy hearing them played fast, if a performer can do it - just that what you see here is closer to Scott Joplin's intentions.

I agree, he was brilliant! And you hear the laughter when people realize what it is he's playing. ;)

I think that this is Virgil showing how much he loves music, regardless of how difficult it is to play.

I believe this is North Phoenix Baptist Church in Arizona and an Austin organ.

Virgil Fox loved to simply have fun with Joplin and to make people laugh and be happy. He also played Theatre Organs for only that reason,,and he said to me of himself playing a theatre organ,",I won't give up Bach,,I better not!" Please,,don't take it so seriously,,he didn't! Have fun with him!

There's a parallel in what my band does in tributing Black Sabbath... We don't rush. My guitarist feels strongly that it works better slow.

your speakers are deceiving you. It is the dedication of a PIPE organ. Not his Rodgers nor his Allen.

And people wonder why the organ is despised by so many.

First, with regards to this tragic performance I will mention several reasons one might consider,it is rather amazing the music he is playing does not coincide with the fingering positions, odd,,in addition he had broken bones in his hands, and in addition he was suffering terminal cancer, so all thing considered, it was not the best performance. Last, for someone ,down the line who goes after his playing of Bach, I'll suggest that if he can draw audiences of 17,000 he can comment but this time trying with a respectful comment

Why was it tragic? He performed it at the speed Joplin intended. The version from the movie "The Sting" is just as slow.

Good God, he played Bach too fast, and Joplin too slow.......sounds like the 90 year old lady that played for open skating at the ice rink!

For your information, sir, Joplin noted in his music that ragtime should NEVER be played fast.
