Before the storm season even began, FEMA officials repeatedly stated they didn’t have adequate funding to appropriately address and provide emergency aid in light of the increased possibility we would be experiencing more extreme storms this year (due to the uncommon patterns of weather this year). The GOP opposed and prevented funding, and everything climatologists stated ended up becoming true. I wish the people of Florida and North Carolina the best of luck. I however do not hold out a lot of hope with FEMA. Two years ago the forest service burned down most of northern New Mexico. The victims of the Calf canyon fires still have not been made whole. FEMA has hired personnel opened offices, but mostly continues to deny claims and request additional information. This is a little different this was not a natural disaster; this was a government caused disaster. I feel that these victims of FEMAs mismanagement have been forgotten

Members of the General Aviation community are some of the unsung heroes of the initial response to Helene in Western North Carolina. A week before the first military helicopters began bringing in supplies, private pilots were flying at their own expense out of airports in Lenoir, Statesville, Jefferson, Morganton and many, many other airfields loaded with donated food, water and myriad supplies to those communities served by airports in their areas. Private helicopters from all over the country were rescuing people from roof tops and searching for survivors. General Aviation proved its mettle and value in the critical hours after storm passage and for weeks thereafter. Cities should prioritize their search for spaces to build landing strips since who knows when they will be needed again in a time of emergency created by natural or man made disasters.
