This is one of my all time favorite songs. Thank you for your review. You really put words to a lot of what I think about the song. And you have also given me another perspective to consider, in some ways.

Amy, great review! You had me laugh out loud at 10:37! Well done!

This is one of those "you had to be there" songs. It's not unique or musically very interesting, but us emo/goth/scene teens ate it up back then.

You can see the difference between modern mixing techniques and those of the past by looking at that waveform.

I didn't expect this one. About the content of the lyrics, I do believe it's more about struggling with yourself and what society expects of you, not so much about a toxic lover. Interesting that you talk about the images created in the music, since Jared is all about the visuals, and has quite a good eye as a director when he makes videos for the band. Jared had a really nice singing voice, which you could appreciate more in other songs from this era. I'd love to see you react to a Manic Street Preachers song =)

I agree that the shifting rhythmic patterns are the most interesting thing about this. The underlying palm-muted guitar pulse that comes to the fore at times reminds me of Amimals by Pink Floyd, while the machine-gun 'repercussions' add a contemporary touch of emotional urgency ('em-urgency'? ).

May I suggest listening to some acts from the late 80s - early 90s showgaze era of alternative rock? Acts like My Bloody Valentine, Lush, Slowdive, Curve and Catherine Wheel. The sounds of these acts all have the hallmarks of the showgaze subgenre: fuzzy guitars, dreamy vocals and lush soundscapes

I am not much for emo music, but this one has good melody, layering and transitions.

About the content of the lyrics, it is not exactly about a toxic relationship with somebody else, but it’s a relationship with yourself. Jared Leto, the vocalist of the band and the one who wrote the lyrics) describe the meaning of the song as “It's really about a relationship with yourself. It's about confronting your fear and confronting the truth about who you are.”

Does anyone instantly think of Chad Smith, or I am the only one? 😄 Btw, I encourage Vlad to play for Amy that video of Chad Smith hearing the song for the first time and playing drums along with it. It is an example of how great drummer and funny person Chad is.
@orcaflotta786735 минут бұрын
Yeah like the Beatles' Ringo, Chad is the most funny, outgoing, openly friendly members of the Peppers. Watch the drum duel Chad Smith vs Will Ferrell. :)

@orcaflotta7867 Yep, I watched it, thanks. I really love Chad for his personality. And he is a damn good drummer too. So, the whole package!

Amy, "generic" is the perfect definition of this band. A lot of the pop rock bands of the 2000 played like this. If you told me this was The Goo Goo Dolls, I would have believed you. Record companies during this time really began to push disposable, junk food for the ears. Just because a band sold millions of copies and won awards doesn't automatically equal quality music. "Disco Duck" by Rick Dees hit #1 and everybody thinks it's garbage.
@luizarthurbrito12 сағат бұрын
And as crazy as it sounds, it's gotten even more generic lately. I checked a couple of recent singles by 30stm and they've gone downhill. Not an easy task.

Interesting contrast in watching your reaction to the song, and also being familiar with Drumeo’s channel episode of this song with Chad Smith learning the drum part sight unseen.
