Fascinating! Well done George; well executed for your first interview. Thank you to Professor Bob Stone for sharing his immense knowledge! I love the idea of preserving the past for historical purposes as well as showing objects and spaces from a different perspective. However, I am mostly intrigued by the therapy aspect of Virtual Reality. Nostalgia is indeed a very powerful sentiment, so it's genuinely fascinating that VR could take us back in time and reconnect, even if just for a moment. P.S. Love the Star Trek reference.😉

Haha! It's getting there, but will no doubt descend back into me rambling to myself in the woods... having said that I've got more interviews with amazing guests in the pipeine! ;-)

Wow it’s amazing that he’s done this. It is so nice to see what it would like back then. I’m wondering if you could some of the quarry workings on the moor like lee moor, foggintor, wheal Betsy, the gun powder mills and all the others. Seeing what they would look like back in the day would be great. Keep up the great work with these podcasts 👍🏻

Very interesting. I'd be interested in seeing one of the many Bronze Age villages brought to life or the mine at Eylesbarrow, the mine tunnels in Grenofen. And, although not a tunnel, what's in the quarry pond at Merrivale?...there used to be huge fish in there when I was a youngster. To be honest my list would be endless.

Excellent piece of work, George, thank you, the talking heads interspersed with the moor footage etc worked a treat. PS Wondering how people with dementia deal with VR and if it helps with the problems they can have with depth and colour perception. PPS you look like a 12 yr old grammar school boy from the 1970s.

Interesting - we're working with dementia patients. Need to look into the depth perception and colour issues. In all honesty, we tend to use screen-based VR for most of our stuff. Even when we use headsets, the stereo is normally very unreliable, so we feed the same image to both eyes and let head movement and monocular cues do their thing!

Great episode! I used to serve Bob and his team at the Burrator Inn when they were on their missions to Burrator. I have a suggestion for Bob which ticks his boxes, how can I get him a message?

Mmm... Virtual reality, or virtual representation as I may like to call it, has up to now been seen as an inferior cousin of books. An easy option for those that "can't be bothered to think" as it were. But is it? Does it's greater ability to "show us the picture", actually provide more food for thought than the established methods of writing to encourage us to think and learn? This is a question I cannot answer, but I think it may be answered sooner than we expect. There is no substitute for reading a real book in the real environment though is there. Or is there? May be I am behind the times, they wait for no man...

@@thedartmoorpodcast An equally ominous and inspirational reference perhaps. For thousands of years the horse was king of the road. And then became the car. How quickly the laughed at became the new kings, and already the internal combustion engine seems to be on it's last legs. I think the times they may be a changing... It could work well, if we are wise and responsible...

The one thing we find with the VR work we do in Devon and Cornwall, especially when presenting to senior folks, is that it stimulates many stories from their past (in my late mum's case, things I'd never heard before!). Yes, nowhere near effective as a good story and not designed to replace imagination, even though you'd think that, given the online hype. But damned good at eliciting stories!
