VirtualBox is VERY popular and common in IT. I speak from experience. Not for general hosting, but for testing and specialized client-network access.

I've mostly seen it used by windows users that don't like hyper-v and don't want to pay for VMware workstation licenses. VirtualBox is also maintained by Oracle (🤮), so I avoid it at all costs.

As a VMWare Admin this is a daily chore when everyone comes dragging in their fantastic machine. Importing, exporting, ova, ovf it all seems someone is doing it for the first time, yes there is a complete write up in Atlassian. Then there are the ones that blame everything on VMWare because their exports are too big (uhhhh clean up your machine first maybe). Never mind I get paid tons of money for this...

Chris, the big challenge with virt-manager, making and using a shared directory. It is more complicated for virt-manager than for Virtualbox (for security-reasons it is not that easy to get that done in virt-manager) and we don't want Linux-users to be stuck to Virtualbox, right? 😉 So it is a good idea for a video if you can figure it out. A shared folder is pretty much essential for a VM in my book.

a workaround would be to host a webserver on the host machine to be able to transfer files onto the guest or even better with a FTP server so the client can also send files

VirtualBox is actually great for 90% of the applications for workstation / desktop use and it supports many different Vm disk formats too. I used it nearly exclusivelly for more than 10 years without a single issue. Now I use virt-manager for gpu passthrough and vmware workstation too because it has better 3d acceleration (higher opengl version) but that's the only advantage I see for those solutions compared to VirtualBox
@THE16THPHANTOM Жыл бұрын
off topic but how is the gpu passthrough? i want to try it and completely be free of windows someday. they say there are some performance loss but how big of a deal is that? is as negligible as FPS gamer snobs saying 16 nano seconds response from a monitor is too much and they need 1 nano second response?

you complain about virtual box but then go right into why vmdk is bad because its not portable. i use proxmox and virtual box and if you have enough memory and cpu the best option is virtual box because anyone can use it, share it, transfer it. not everyone has a lab in their house like you.

A few months ago, I used VMware vCenter Converter Standalone to create a VM of my Window 11 laptop. It created the files in VMDK format. Since then, I updated the VMware vCenter to Ver 6.4 and when I created a VM of my Windows 10 desktop, it created the files in VHDX. Any idea why ? The problem that it created for me is that I want to deploy this on my QNAP NAS and it won't recognize the VHDX files.

@Monarchias2 жыл бұрын
Want a relatively nice way? Start with a homelab. All you need is a pc that have at least 4 cores (or like 2 cores 4 threads) and 8GB RAM, 2 HDD minimum, but and SSD, or 2 would be better. For example 1 120 HDD (or SSD) for hypervisor (like Proxmox, hyper-v, or even Win 2016), and 2 other 500GB+ HDD (or SSD, for these preferably SSD's for speed, heavily advised). That other 1 or 2 drives are for storing VM's, images, backups and whatever you learn on the way to use it for. When you will spin up more VM's you will apriciate the performance of SSD's. If you will do it fine, you will quickly outgrow the specifications. For minimalists or budget reasons, I would scale things with 1 cpu thread and 2GB RAM wise. I hope this helped.

Here's what I'd like to do with a Virtual Machine (and yet I doubt its possible): I have a dual boot machine with two HDs, one has Windows on it and the other Linux. I need to log into the Windows side about every 6 weeks to work on a recurring freelance project so I'd like to find a way to load that already installed Windows drive in a VM under Linux. I don't want to install everything from scratch (because I have software installed on that Windows instance that I no longer have access to, but it is legally installed there). Is this even possible? If so what would be the best way to go about doing it?
@DavidM2002 Жыл бұрын
I created a VM of my Windows 11 laptop using VMware vCenter Converter Standalone. It's a perfect replica of my laptop with all of the apps and settings. It's free from VMware. Once I created the files, I then deployed that on my QNAP NAS but more knowledgeable people will be able to explain how to deploy it on your Linux drive. For a novice, it definitely took some hand holding and a couple more YT videos to really get it to run properly.
