From the hard drive vaults of CanonWired comes this exclusive, never-before-seen footage, filmed over a year ago, and nearly lost among terabytes of footage: The Virtual Tour of Doug Wilson's Office and Library! I'm sure there are a lot more books that have been added since, but otherwise things look pretty much the same. Enjoy this virtual tour!

If I'm being honest with myself, I can't help but admire someone who has that much respect and appreciation of books.

+jimmie darks LOL! In other words, you have no answer to my questions. Boy, that's rich. YOU are the one bringing up something that has zero to do with the video, which was simply a pleasant tour of a home office/library. And yet you have the gall to tell ME to "stick with the point"? How about answering what I asked? You know you can't. And won't. ETA: Yeah, just what I thought. Crickets.

I don't get these notifications always, so I missed answering your question. If you have a non-God perspective, then it would be true. As I understand the statement referred to books give life, and they can, just depends on what kind of life you want. No, educating yourself is not selfish. My point was educating yourself for self-purposes only, and not contribute to the good and benefit of others is selfish. Knowledge without wisdom in applying the knowledge is useless, and not for the benefit of others, again, is selfish. Hope I answered your questions. My apologies for taking so long. Just got a notification today.

I recognize some of my library which I am just diving into. The Hendrickson Ante-Nicene, Nicene, and Post-Nicene Fathers; the Baker edition of Schaff's Creeds of Christendom. When anybody asks me if I have read all my books, I answer "of course not!". These are reference books. I use the indexes to refer to them as needed, and their bibliographies to research more deeply. When I want to discover what the Ante-Nicene fathers thought about a topic, I consult the index of subjects. When I want to see what they said about each verse I consult the index of texts. A well-researched index, bibliography, or syntopicon is worth its weight in gold as it saves hours of research.

I never thought I'd hear Girard (prophet) and Piper (obsolete) mentioned in the same sentence. Like Will Hunting might say, those are a lot of books, too bad they're the wrong ones (except Girard of course).
@REDRAGON12345
@REDRAGON12345 7 жыл бұрын
You think John Piper is obsolete?
@MrSippiMekong
@MrSippiMekong 7 жыл бұрын
+REDRAGON12345 Yes. Novel to study, but that's where Piper's relevance ends to this chaplain ministering in the real world. Out of touch with reality. Philosophically shaky, inconsistent with a cosmology informed by quantum awareness, but most troubling is the utter incongruence and even abusive the model is toward the deep suffering of this world. But I'm a process oriented universalist who, believe it or not, is ordained by a major evangelical denomination. Oh and I happen to live in the same city as Piper so I have particular proximity to the vitriol and lack of pastoral (care) depth that has come from his church. And don't get me started on women. Obsolete in all these ways. Piper more or less perpetuates Charles Hodge. Seriously out dated.
@REDRAGON12345
@REDRAGON12345 7 жыл бұрын
Coming from an Arminian-Wesleyan perspective, I find Piper completely outdated (and overrated), but perhaps for different reasons than you. Still, I find most myself in agreement with much of what you've said.

Just recently found you through looking at Theonomy you teach more about it than most but can you do a thorough teaching on it? There is so much to learn from it seems alll want to stay away from it we as Christians must know at least to be a standard of our laws ,there is much to learn from it ,hope you and Durbin get a group and discuss the issue of what laws we keep because as little as I know about it most people say ,well that was the Old Testament,and some things the O.T. Does not make sense or does it? I know it is a standard and hard to enforce ,but our country needs help ,we are a nation of ostriches ,I have heard you on it and you make so much sense,JESUS SPEED TO YOUR MINISTRY,SEEMS THE HOLY SPIRIT HAS BEEN LOST THESE FEW CENTURIES IN THIS WORLD ,it only thrives in the hearts of some,I am the worlds biggest sinner but the LORD JESUS SAVED ME,and I love to hear sermons on subjects because I love hard preaching THANK YOU

... and this is important, why? ...'Of the making of many books there is no end'. Rather, "O how love I they Law... it is my meditation all the day." Little time for else. How sad and telling that so much money and time is spent on the writings of men... when at the same age, in these last days, God's Holy Word, Inspired, Infallible, AND PRESERVED, is once again being hidden from sight under a massive pile of men's writings and professorial criticism... writings purporting to be the Holy Word, yet needing copyrights sworn by the writers as their original authors, to protect profits! When confronted with substitutes and altered words, I ask... "which one are you going to burn?". Beware, man with his books will soon be forgotten, His Holy Word alone remains forever. "Time, like an ever rolling stream, Bears all its sons away; They fly forgotten, as a dream Dies at the opening day." (Psalm 90)

I read books from men who help and teach me how to meditate upon God's word. It's really helpful considering what God may have been teaching His people in history. We can also learn a lot from history, including the mistakes of our forefathers and we can praise God for what He has done in and through His church in previous generations. Obviously, these are all subservient to the direct reading and meditating upon God's word for ourselves. I want my minister to be well-read so he can both minister to the souls of the flock and know how to interact with the world around us faithfully. Blessings.
