I agree VR is the next step. The worst thing that happened to me in VR is 🤔.........Was playing Half-Life Alyx. and in the game, a head crab passes near my legs but at the same time, in the real world, my cat decided he wanted affection. My brother's first reaction to VR says it all. "Damn! ALL games should be re-made for VR". We were just trying out a simple Zelda Wind Waker scene in "Steam Home". But for him, just experiencing the depth, 3D and presence of VR was enough to get blown away. Then we tried Half Life Alyx and yeah, I forced him to take breaks, but he played for 4 hours and wouldn't stop if I didn't tell him to. xD

I think Half-Life 2 VR is a real eye opener how games can be transformed with VR. Half-Life 2 is a master piece already. Experiencing it in VR enhances the experience tenfold. The atmosphere, the world, the gameplay, all of it is still just as you remember from a flatscreen, but noticeable more intense. Being able to compare the same game in flat and in VR really shows how good those additions are, that VR is no mere gimmick, but a way to make certain games even better.

I am ashamed to admit that I wrote VR off until very recently. I am a huge traditional gamer but I equated VR with the silly and primitive experiences that came out around the launch of the original Oculus Rift. I decided to get a Quest 2 this July and I have not played a flatscreen game since then. I even got my wife obsessed with Vrchat and Bigscreen, now we explore and play together just about every day. She has her own Quest 2 and the ease of use was such a huge benefit I have come full circle and think that VR/AR is the next revolution in entertainment and technology. It has gotten more accessible, lighter, and cheaper in just 5 years, I can’t wait to see where it will be in another 5.
@CrossingRover2 жыл бұрын
More directly in response to the video, traditional FPS feel so robotic and unnatural after playing games like Contractors and Onward. I’ve played a lot of Airsoft and paintball, so ducking behind cover, aiming in a different direction than I am looking, and manually reloading feel so satisfying. I literally don’t think I could go back to playing a flatscreen FPS. Plus another great aspect of VR is that the industry is still in its infancy. I’ve felt more and more detached from the AAA games industry in recent years and most of my time was spent in indie and retro games. Because of the small budgets and dev teams, VR games return the feeling that the creator actually had a vision and message they wanted to achieve, and they’re using all their limited resources to accomplish it. No more bloated 100 hour open worlds with maybe 20 hours of actual gameplay spread paper thin. No more 30 minute cutscenes with zero interactivity in a medium defined by its interactivity. The experiences are allowed to simply speak for themselves and be exactly what was envisioned.
@fireaza2 жыл бұрын
Big props for you having the balls to admit that. A lot of people would rather miss out on a potentially fun new way to enjoy video games, because their already made a big display about how they believe VR is a gimmick, and their ego is more important than anything else.
@CrossingRover2 жыл бұрын
@@fireaza Absolutely, when I’m flat out wrong on something I can admit it. I think the issue is twofold- it is almost impossible to communicate how different a VR experience is through traditional flatscreen content. Just the act of moving around and exploring a virtual space can be exhilarating in a way that I haven’t felt in a traditional game or movie. Maybe I’m just susceptible to it but I find myself completely immersed to the point that coming back to “real” reality can end up feeling strange at first. Secondly, mainstream media hardly talks about VR or when it does, equates it to gimmicks like 3DTV.

I am 60 years old now. I started playing pancake games in the early 80's at arcades. In the mid 90's I got into PC gaming. It was fun to explore so many new worlds and experiences. In the 2000's, I got tired of viewing other worlds through a small window, interacting with worlds in miniature scale and controlling game functions with M&K. I stopped playing video games for about ten years because pancake games just didn't meet my expectations anymore. Then came VR. I jumped on it and finally got what I was looking for. To be 'inside' the game, not just look at it through a small window. To move my character with my actual body. To see the various worlds and characters in full scale. I still won't play video games, unless they are in VR. I don't care how good of a game it is, if it is not VR, I won't play it. I bought two licenses of Star Citizen years ago, but I haven't and won't play it until it comes out in VR like they promised. Too bad Hogwart's Legacy won't be in VR. WB really dropped the ball on that one. What Harry Potter fan doesn't want to be 'inside' the wizarding world? People who scoff at VR really have no idea what they are missing. I get it though, some people are really into 40 year old tech and may never like VR. To each their own, but damn, I am happy we have VR!

VR adds so much. One of the coolest things is true dual wielding. If you hear enemies coming from two different doorways you can point one of your guns at each doorway and just wait, wheras in a flat game you would be stuck pointing at one spot with both weapons. Or in Skyrim VR (which admittedly doesn't have the best sword physics) I would hold my shield up with my left hand and stab out with my right, ancient Roman-style, and it worked! Firing bows and arrows also felt great in that game. I also love the sense of scale that VR provides. The moment that sold me was very early on, during the opening sequence for Rigs Mechanised Combat League (a mech-based sports game) where one of the mechs leaps right over the head of the player in full 1:1 scale. I instantly became a true believer in that moment and haven't looked back. Can't wait for PSVR2!

Onward update 1.7 was the most intense experience I have ever been playing a first person shooter. The gun shots and grenades are the loudest sounds in the game and they sound realistic. It's the only time playing a video game where I felt like I was holding a deadly weapon instead of a virtual gun. The gameplay is rather serious, 1-2 shots to kill, one life per round, an object to defend or attack, and 4 teammates that are counting on you to pull your weight each round. You don't want to be caught out in the open. As soon as you get shot at you dive behind cover with every bullet blowing out your eardrums as it flys by. The guy shooting you is far away and in cover and you have to find him without getting a bullet in your head. The maps were so big, detailed, and lively you forget you're in a video game sometimes.

I've been playing vr since 2018 and it is just brilliant. I've enjoyed so many games and met so many great people. Some of my worst and best moments in vr were those hyper-immersed lizard brain moments, when i played phasmo in vr for the first time I got so terrified, it was the first hunt i ever had and i was so scared that i crawled in a ball and froze on the floor. Took me about thirty seconds before i realised that it was a game and i can just take off the headset. A few times in a lot of games i just got so immersed that for like 20 mins I'm really there, of course you get that feeling when you are in vr but sometimes it just gets to a whole different level and the real world fades away for a while, theres a certain point where a switch just flips in your brain and for a while you can't percieve that it's not real, the fov that when you aren't immersed you can see the edges of dissapear and the feeling of the controllers in gone which feels great when you aren't playing a horror game. If you don't have vr I really recommend getting it, it's hard to describe the feeling of getting in vr for the first time, the only thing i can say is that it's just magical.

"Once you start playing VR games, it's hard to go back to regular gaming" 0:11 I do not agree at all... I have a VR headset, and I like playing VR from time to time, BUTT... to say that it's better than "regular games", and that it's hard to go back to them after VR is either plain and dumb lying to yourself, or just a horrible taste in video games in general. Like... at the start there were only 2D games, then there were 3D games, and now there are VR games... but have 2D games been forgotten because of the 3D games? No, not at all - I still, personally, think that 2D is the best way of games possible, because it has the most possibilities in game mechanics because of the limitation to only 2 dimensions... 3D is great mostly for looks, but if you want to make a game in 3D, you need a lot of manpower, artistic skill and technology capable of making such games, which apparently is a rare combination nowadays. The same is for VR - it's mostly immersion, but if you want a game that is more than just shooting, driving and stabbing - VR isn't the right option for now. 2D, on the other side, has none of these problems, because in 2D, you don't need the best looks that you need a whole team to make, and it's pretty logical to not have logic, if you understand me... VR just isn't that great.

we are definitely in the early stages. I’d argue we’re still in somewhat of an alpha stage. I don’t think vr will fully be embraced until there is a less bulky model. I think most people view it as a gimmick and it’ll take a streamlined, sleek model for people to really get on board. Almost all of VR is run by indie companies. it reminds me of the early 2000’s with PC gaming where the companies pushing the boundaries into the new domain were relatively small. Eventually we’ll see more AAA releases when companies realize it’s worth the investment and that’ll bring even more people on board. There’s no doubt in my mind that AR at least will be used in workplaces in the next decade or two. Anyone who’s done work in VR knows how beneficial it is to have infinite virtual space to work with. I can pull up 5 virtual monitors at once, being able to resize and reshape them, all without needing any actual equipment. We’re still learning and experimenting with the possibilities. This is a prototype.

The visuals are really beautiful, a level design worth a Mario game, and good ideas to use VR : your dualshock appears in the game (you can move it like a VR controller in space, thanks to the PS camera) and you can use many gagdets attached to it like a grapplin hook to make ropes for Astro and solve puzzles along with a water gun, a shuriken launcher, and even a minigun(yes) ! You can also use litteraly your head to destoy a wall, for example, or to beat specific enemies. Sometimes it's you who is being attacked instead of Astro. And when you get hit, your vision shatters like it's a broken window, you get liquids (water or paint) on your face that blind you, or sparks everywhere when you get electrocuted.

and there is also the haters, either can't afford it, or they get sick... or they are too lazy to want to stand and reload guns. There are some weird people out there that are hell bent into disliking VR... it's the best thing since 3d accelerated games... but some gamers just decided that it's a gimmick like 3d movies and can't fathom that they have been wrong for the last 5 years.

I just got into VR a few weeks ago and I noticed that I was so used to the guardian barriers stopping me when I walked too far that I would expect to see them in real life! My dreams have been vivid and have taken a new direction, and going back to playing shooters and rpgs on a monitor feels so detached and boring. Now begins the long journey to convince my friends to get VR headsets.

One thing I find with VRFPS games is that aiming and hitting targets who are on the move is far, FAR easier than with a mouse or joypad. With a mouse or joypad, most of the time you will aim ahead of a running person, wait until they gonna cross the path and then shoot, then re-aim in front of them and hope they keep going that direction, then shoot again and so on and so forth. With VR, I just follow the person with the gun while they run.. Cause the movement is 1:1, so it's like pointing at a moving car... Ponting at a moving car with a joypad is tricky, mouse, also pretty tricky.. In VR you can keep your crosshairs on like the side mirror with relative ease... Also, shooting clay pigeons in VR, easy peasy. Doing that with a joypad and no auto aim? Pfff, nope.

Exactly this. Some people just refuse to bother with it, I guess because of the price of entry, but once they try a really good game they're hooked. Pavlov still has a great community always up for a laugh and it has brilliant gun play too.

Personally when it comes to fps games, if it has a slow motion ability then I prefer a simplified reload system. This could be summarized in 3 words: Dual wield pistols Edit:in terms of vr taking over what I play, it hasn’t gotten to that yet (but that might be due to me sticking with free stuff because I’ve been cheap recently), but I also feel like some of the most immersive games won’t work in vr because they rely on random chance and dice rolls (FTL:Faster Than Light, Daggerfall, etc).

4:28 Boneworks is my favorite VR game because you can do pretty much anything that seems logical to do. You can grab your enemies with one hand and smack him in the face with your other fist. There is climbing physics. Everything is a physics object, has it's own weight, and interacts with everything else.

I was sold on VR when I started playing Walking Dead Saints & Sinners. I got to a big house, and I thought I had cleared it. But this zombie had wandered in through the front door. The front door I didn't close. It come out of the hallway and tried to grab me. I about shit my pants while I screamed like an 11 year old. I like horror, I love monsters, but OMG that was the most intense zombie moment I'd ever experienced.

I can give a good example A man is behind you, he snuck up on you and is about to plung a knife into your back On controller, you would spin around and have a slim chance to survive In vr, you can (while holding a pistol) aim your gun besides your head and shoot behind you, surprising your opponent all while never having to prioritise movement

VR is fun, but it's also physically exhausting if you play it for a long time, so I frequently take breaks that last for days before I go back to playing Onward or Blade and sorcery. So I play pancake mode games way more often. VR won't replace traditional gaming,but it's a cool option to have. Most major developers don't really care about VR currently anyway. It's currently overwhelmingly populated by games that feel like mobile games that are only interesting BECAUSE it's a VR experience.

Yeah, it ruined FPS's and cockpit games for me as well. Elite Dangerous is how I got into VR back in 2015, and playing a flying or space game without VR just isn't gonna be an option. I also love how VR can handle storage, like the backpack in Into the Radius. I love how versatile it is and how you can grab and sort things how you like, plus each object you touch in the game world (not just your home base, but anywhere in the game) becomes persistent so you can decorate your room any way you like or leave supplies for yourself out in the world... I assume SOME of this is possible in flat gaming, but it won't be physicalized and organic like it is in VR. Grabbing guns out of your holster and stuffing stuff into a backpack just isn't the same without modern motion controls.

I completely agree with the 3rd Person part at the end. I still havent tried VR myself but I always hoped someone would see the potential of VR for 3rd person gamepad games. I had no idea there are actually few games that support it. IMO all games should support VR. I know graphics take a bit of hit but thats changing lately with AI upscaling. I can only imagine how cool would it be to play game like Uncharted in VR and it supporting movement of the head, imagine peeking around corners...

Yeah, you kind of get used to it though. It kinda sucks once you get jaded by VR horror. Flatscreen games and movies are almost never scary after that. I am always on the hunt for my next "big scare" like a drug addict looking for their next fix. 🤣 Once you start to analyze the rmechanics of horror games and learn patterns in how their enemy AI is programmed -- they unfortunately _really_ become WAY less scary. I'd love to see more horror games with VERY unpredictable enemy AI and no safe spaces or hand-holding for the player what so ever. I think the scariest horror game I've played so far (besides my first P.T playthrough back when it first released) is Alien Isolation with the mods to make the Xeno _way_ more alert and aggressive. That sh*t is intense. Do you have any recommendations for a good VR horror game that will scare a jaded bugger like me?

I feel it is much easier to relax with games on a flat screen, and especially strategy games works better on a flat. My take on VR is that it certainly has some awesome features, but it won't replace flatscreen gaming. They can coexist. Sadly, I can hardly play VR due to having just been through brain surgery where I had a tumor pressing on my balance nerve, so I get dizzy almost immidiately. Haven't allways been like this, but my Rift stays pretty much unused these days.
