@@Lordosvk well, in my country the repair would had to be authorized by 4 different government ministries, all juggling around for around a year, then it would need an environmental approval, another 8 months, and then get the required licences and approving the financing to do so, only 2 years. In the end, elections come and everybody forgets about the thing and the cycle repeats.

In Japan, many smaller crossings use arm lifting gates with cheap bamboo poles clad in yellow and black plastic, and a pile of spares stashed nearby. They also put signs on the arms telling you that if you're trapped by the arms, go ahead and drive forward and break the arms. They're expendable, lives aren't.

This reminds me of the time my tractor-trailer almost got taken out by a fast commuter train. There was a rail line about 30ft before the stop-and-go lights. There was a car in the small space between the light and the rail so I stayed back behind The crossing arm. I had a Freightliner autoshift. The light turn green and I proceeded across the rail...the car took its sweet time entering the intersection to turn left. As I was about halfway across the track, the lights came on and the arms started coming down. Another couple of seconds and I would have pushed that car through the intersection. Just as my tail cleared the rail, a passenger train traveling about 60 miles an hour came through the intersection. I would say I was only about ten feet away from having the rear portion of my trailer taken out. It was a normal route for me so from then on, I waited until any car that was in that short section to finish making its turn before I hammered down to cross the tracks.

I have called the Grade Crossing Hotline at least two times for the RR Crossing near where I live: 1) Walking the dogs, I saw a car stuck on the tracks because they thought it was the street. 2) Again, while walking the dogs, I saw some car had hit and left the Crossing arm at an angle, so that when it was lowered for a train, the train would hit it in either direction.

Did the truck company pay for the repair? (For those who do not know, if a gate does not "park", it descends. When descended and no train, it is raised back to its parked position.) Electricity keeps the gates up. If an electrical failure, the gates descend to their closed (fail safe) position. Grade crossing signals operate on batteries constantly being charged. If domestic power fails, the *(o)T(o)* will still operate.

I can't say I completely blame the truck driver. The signal bell started just moments before he came to the intersection, and big trucks like this take a little while to slow down and stop. And there was very little delay between the signal bell and the gate coming down. Basically, this gate needed a "yellow light" phase where people already at the crossing or approaching without time to slow down have a chance to get through the intersection, like standard traffic lights. The truck driver was clearly rushing a bit, but I wouldn't call that a crime, nor would I call crawling past a stop in a clear intersection. The real culprit here is bad city planning, or bad design by the train signal/gate manufacturer.

Watched the video twice. Second time more carefully, as if initiating an accident report. Trucker edged into the traffic circle {probably to check for traffic} before the crossing lights activated. Then the crossing lights activated and the gate came down onto the truck. {If only, the trucker would have , could have, should have stopped behind the crossing signal...then edge forward to check for traffic, the gate may have still come down on the truck, maybe not} Trucker sat. Then he tried to backup. But the gate wouldn't slide, hungup on top of truck. {If the trucker would have, could have, should have sat until the train passed...then maybe something else worse or better could have happened...no one can know...} The trucker decided to drive forward, not stopping when the gate hungup again, different location, on top of truck, rotating the gate. {Oops} Gate operational design flaw as far as I'm concerned. Back to failure modes analysis...

It seems like everything happens in La Grange, Kentucky or Ashland, Virginia. I’m glad they don’t have streets sharing a path with a train where I live. I also don’t understand why they have a short stretch of rail with no road around it for the cars to continue driving on. Constantly seeing cars getting stuck on the tracks because they don’t realize that the lane ends, and that it starts up again a block later. Why don’t they just pave it on either side of the rail like the rest of the street.

Just noticed that one of the lights on that signal got knocked out of alignment by the gate constantly raising and lowering.

I really hope they got the driver of that truck, because that is a hit-and-run. Not the kind where there is a person injured, but slightly worse than running from a parking incident.

Also, everyone who drive past the gate while it was having its fits technically broke the law. You are not allowed to do like the truck and pass a moving gate. Except in this case lenience from law enforcement makes sense.

The driver is/was wrong. In my hometown if the gates hit a car, truck, person, etc., the gates go back up to the resting position and back down flashing until the obstacle is out of the way. So in this case the gates would have hit the truck then went back up and the truck could clear, instead of resting on the dump body of the truck, him driving off then getting damaged.

The arms are made of wood so they will break just like it did . The arm was up , the truck started to move and it came down resting on the bed of the truck with the driver probably not knowing it was there .

Where I'm from gate that hit an obstacle lift back up for few seconds then drops back down,I think this would be useful in this situation.
