So they literally touched nothing except the screens and lenses, this seems like a pretty low effort "upgrade" that leaves some very glaring flaws in place. I had a small amount of hope HTC was back in the game based on the excellent 3.0 trackers, but maybe this is a wake up call that they were barely in it in the first place.

I am owner of HP Reverb G2. And I decided to try out Valve Index recently. The tracking and controllers are superb. But the resolution, common, I cannot play in Valve after HP G2. So I thought it would be nice to have superb tracking and resolution. And here we go, I ordered HTC Vive Pro 2 which, in my opinion, has it all in one.

@@minecrafter0505 I would try it out before making your mind up. VR headsets work different for each person as we have different eyes and head sizes. I have the original HTC vive and I can tell you that my friends had different experiences with it over my own and that is first gen headset. I have a pre order to updated my original set. I feel the screen resolution for the current market is the best in the field ... the next one is the 8k x Prima but that one is almost double the cost and has its own issues. In about 10 years time when they release another one :( They still can't make Indexes, controllers and particularly basestations quickly enough and they're still selling at the original full price, so I can't see why Valve would bring out another headset when their current one is so sought-after. They also must make a fortune from users buying basestations and knuckles for use with other headsets. They're in a very strong position and have no need to bring another HMD out for the forseeable future.

@@vtidsvr4674 I have a small amount of hope that a company isn't just after profits but wants to innovate and create some amazing technologies, and thus would release a much better headset sooner, regardless of their other predecessor performance. Part of why I give kudos to oculus quest 2, they basically said fuck the history of the quest 1, we need to release this better version to get more people to VR, all at a financial loss.
@vtidsvr4674

@@alexkennedy5133 Valve is a business - It's mostly just about profits in reality. FB also gave a huge middle finger to PCVR though. They weren't interested in pushing that further, becaue they went down the mass-adoption route. So you can see it from both sides. Yes they've pushed standalone VR to new limits, and at an initial financial loss (purely the hardware) but they had a 'Rift 2' ready to go and then at the last minute they dropped the project in favour of standalone. I will always wish I could have had a Rift 2. As I said elswhere, if there was a Rift CV1 with better res and lower SDE it'd be my favourite headset ont he market. It so nearly came to market, but FB fudged that.

I know you touched on it, but in your experience how does the sweetspot/central area of optimal clarity compare to that of the G2. I know it depends on face shape/eye depth etc but for me the G2 was unusable because of the peanut-sized central sweetspot with blurriness elsewhere. Thanks.
@_kev_
@_kev_ 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'm very annoyed by some aspects of my G2, sweetspot being one of them. I preordered a Pro 2 only to get rid of the G2 asap. I still have an Index, but the visual clarity of a higher res display is addictive. I just can't put up with loss of connection, weird USB behavior, poor build quality, bad software and atrocious FOV anymore. As long as the Pro 2 gets rid of these issues, I'm already happy. All I hope for is an Index replacement with higher res.

@@_kev_ I own an Index and I basically see the Pro 2 as an Index but with higher res. I don't notice the higher refresh rates on the Index so I'm happy with 90hz, and I prefer on-ear audio. The mic does sound pretty disappointing though! My only concern is the sweetspot size and also how much of an improvement will it be over the Index when I'm running a 1080ti (can't get hold of a 30 series). Worst case the sweetspot is crap and I return it and continue with the Index and CV1.

Not worth it. My oculus quest 2 literally never fails and was half the price.

Many thanks for the Review Mike! As an owner of the OG Vive Pro + Index + Base stations + Wireless adapter. I can't wait for the PRO 2. The reason I am buying one is exactly that! BUMP in resolution and FOV. Also having the ability to play in Wireless mode without any VIDEO compression (ulike Quest 2) and swap batteries on the fly (unlike Quest 2) it's a no brainer for me. Looking forward to the Vive Wireless Adapter update as well ^_^ As for games, I am mostly looking forward playing (and developing some AAA VR game mods for games that actually have proper graphics like HL-Alyx).
@hellterminator
@hellterminator 3 жыл бұрын
1. The Wireless Adapter does compress the video, but instead of h.264/h.265 it uses a custom codec which is much less efficient, but also a lot faster. The result is lower latency (but still not equivalent to wired), comparable artifacting and *terrible* resolution (about 3/7 the resolution of the Quest 2). 2. Using the Pro 2 with the wireless adapter is just dumb - you'll be limited to a resolution straight out of 2017 with a promised upgrade to 2019 resolution. If you're OK with that, why not save a ton of money and buy a Cosmos Elite instead? Or why not save even more and just keep using your original Pro? The nominal resolution will be the same. Sure, you lose 1/3 of the subpixels, but you gain the beautiful inky blacks of OLED.
@Helifax19
@Helifax19 3 жыл бұрын
@@hellterminator Interesting. I have both the Quest 2 and the Vive Pro with the Wireless Adapter. I can clearly see macro blocks and resolution problems on the Quest 2 via Link or Air link but no such issue on the Wireless Adapter (unless the emitter is blocked or the signal drops in quality). I couldn't find the spec for the Wireless Adapter regarding the Vive Pro and what is the max resolution it supports, but with the naked eye, I can see a bit lower resolution, but not as low as the Quest 2 resolution. (This on an i9 9900k and RTX 2080Ti). Comparing both of the them SBS, the wireless adapter clearly wins in terms of quality and performance (and actually being able to change the battery). However a lot of people don't care or have the same high standards ^_^ (Just The Wireless Adapter is as expensive as a Quest 2 after all, but you can clearly see the benefits). The only negative I have is that it requires a PCI card so on my Desktop Replacement Laptop I can't use it :( at least not with another external PCI to Thunderbolt enclosure which is bigger than the whole Laptop....)
@hellterminator
@hellterminator 3 жыл бұрын
@@Helifax19 Were you perhaps running low bitrate on the Quest 2? I usually run 100Mbps h.265 and while the image is a bit softer than my Index, I can't really see blocking, but before I upgraded my AP, when I had to run at 30 Mbps, there was very visible blocking. As far as Link goes, something's definitely off about the image and it does block for a second when the scene changes completely (e.g. going from menu to game), but other than that, it's not blocky either. But to be fair, unlike Virtual Desktop, I haven't spent any time tweaking it, so maybe it could be improved.
@Helifax19
@Helifax19 3 жыл бұрын
@@hellterminator I tried everything from 150Mbps to 300Mbps and auto now with the v28 software. It was always adding a lot of GPU overhead to do the encoding which resulted in best case scenario with macroblocks, worst case scenario with frame stuttering longer than 1 second.. v29 seems to have improved this greatly though! (I just checked! So perhaps they did more tweaks there for the 120Hz mode ?! )

I dove into VR with Quest 2, as a child of the 80's i had been promised a VR experience from waaaay back lol. I was not disappointed! It blew me away when i fired up First Steps... it was pretty much what i had in my head. But for me it was a bit too blurry, i also grabbed a Rift S before they sold out but my gaming rig hadn't arrived until a week after the Quest 2. I immediately saw a massive improvement in visuals on the Rift S over the Quest 2, and i fiddled with that thing for a week! Just couldn't manage to hit the sweet spot, and what i could manage... the pro strap had to be SO TIGHT it was miserable after 20 minutes anyway. I'm fortunate to have gotten a Rift S, and on the cheap, before they went out of circulation. I don't expect i'll upgrade until next year at the earliest. I'd love to see a deeper dive into the vertical field of view and the distortion. Or more specifically a direct comparison to the Index when considering an update from the OG Vive. I've seen other reviews marking FOV and distortion as the biggest drawback of the Pro 2. I'm currently torn between the Index and the Pro 2 to replace my OG Vive and I'm still on the fence on which one I should get. I'm interested in the resolution and FOV upgrade over my G2, as well as kicking Mixed Reality Portal to the curb. But after this, I'm going to hold off for the Index 2, if that ever comes out. Sure, the Reverb G2 can be a pain to get working, especially in a mixed setup with Index controllers, but it's not bad enough to justify that small of an upgrade, as well as that much of a downgrade in terms of microphone quality. Seriously, HTC, what gives? This is your flagship headset, and it sounds like a $2 clip on mic you find over by the checkout in a convenience store.

Right now pcvr headsets feel as if they have hit a roadblock and innovation is lacking, the last time we have seen a truly innovative pcvr headset has been the valve index and that headset is already 2 years old and nothing has topped it which is sad. You solidified my thinking on this headset. No more than you get (display upgrades) it just simply doesn't warrant the purchase/upgrade. First time I had those controllers in my hands I was not a fan, so it's disappointing that they just ignored them. Ignoring the controllers was probably with the thought that those that will upgrade already have something else or at least something they like. It's like holding two massive TV remotes with triggers. That's a weird rack for a company to consistently hang their coat on.
