In about 10 years time when they release another one :( They still can't make Indexes, controllers and particularly basestations quickly enough and they're still selling at the original full price, so I can't see why Valve would bring out another headset when their current one is so sought-after. They also must make a fortune from users buying basestations and knuckles for use with other headsets. They're in a very strong position and have no need to bring another HMD out for the forseeable future.

Many thanks for the Review Mike! As an owner of the OG Vive Pro + Index + Base stations + Wireless adapter. I can't wait for the PRO 2. The reason I am buying one is exactly that! BUMP in resolution and FOV. Also having the ability to play in Wireless mode without any VIDEO compression (ulike Quest 2) and swap batteries on the fly (unlike Quest 2) it's a no brainer for me. Looking forward to the Vive Wireless Adapter update as well ^_^ As for games, I am mostly looking forward playing (and developing some AAA VR game mods for games that actually have proper graphics like HL-Alyx).
@hellterminator3 жыл бұрын
1. The Wireless Adapter does compress the video, but instead of h.264/h.265 it uses a custom codec which is much less efficient, but also a lot faster. The result is lower latency (but still not equivalent to wired), comparable artifacting and *terrible* resolution (about 3/7 the resolution of the Quest 2). 2. Using the Pro 2 with the wireless adapter is just dumb - you'll be limited to a resolution straight out of 2017 with a promised upgrade to 2019 resolution. If you're OK with that, why not save a ton of money and buy a Cosmos Elite instead? Or why not save even more and just keep using your original Pro? The nominal resolution will be the same. Sure, you lose 1/3 of the subpixels, but you gain the beautiful inky blacks of OLED.
@Helifax193 жыл бұрын
@@hellterminator Interesting. I have both the Quest 2 and the Vive Pro with the Wireless Adapter. I can clearly see macro blocks and resolution problems on the Quest 2 via Link or Air link but no such issue on the Wireless Adapter (unless the emitter is blocked or the signal drops in quality). I couldn't find the spec for the Wireless Adapter regarding the Vive Pro and what is the max resolution it supports, but with the naked eye, I can see a bit lower resolution, but not as low as the Quest 2 resolution. (This on an i9 9900k and RTX 2080Ti). Comparing both of the them SBS, the wireless adapter clearly wins in terms of quality and performance (and actually being able to change the battery). However a lot of people don't care or have the same high standards ^_^ (Just The Wireless Adapter is as expensive as a Quest 2 after all, but you can clearly see the benefits). The only negative I have is that it requires a PCI card so on my Desktop Replacement Laptop I can't use it :( at least not with another external PCI to Thunderbolt enclosure which is bigger than the whole Laptop....)
@hellterminator3 жыл бұрын
@@Helifax19 Were you perhaps running low bitrate on the Quest 2? I usually run 100Mbps h.265 and while the image is a bit softer than my Index, I can't really see blocking, but before I upgraded my AP, when I had to run at 30 Mbps, there was very visible blocking. As far as Link goes, something's definitely off about the image and it does block for a second when the scene changes completely (e.g. going from menu to game), but other than that, it's not blocky either. But to be fair, unlike Virtual Desktop, I haven't spent any time tweaking it, so maybe it could be improved.
@Helifax193 жыл бұрын
@@hellterminator I tried everything from 150Mbps to 300Mbps and auto now with the v28 software. It was always adding a lot of GPU overhead to do the encoding which resulted in best case scenario with macroblocks, worst case scenario with frame stuttering longer than 1 second.. v29 seems to have improved this greatly though! 6:10 This is not *as much* of a problem if you use SteamVR and OVR Advanced Settings to calibrate your VR headset. For example, my recommended setting for Valve Index as someone who previously owned an OLED original HTC Vive is 130% brightness in steamVR, and in OVR Advanced Settings: Red 100%, Green 100%, Blue 94%. Brings some of the vivid color back that I missed from OG Vive.

Right now pcvr headsets feel as if they have hit a roadblock and innovation is lacking, the last time we have seen a truly innovative pcvr headset has been the valve index and that headset is already 2 years old and nothing has topped it which is sad. Right now buying anything other than a quest 2 or a valve index just feels dumb. Hopefully valve will release their next headset and it will bring some well needed innovations.

There are a lot of compromises involved in getting it cheap yet able to function without being plugged into a pc, of course. You solidified my thinking on this headset. No more than you get (display upgrades) it just simply doesn't warrant the purchase/upgrade. First time I had those controllers in my hands I was not a fan, so it's disappointing that they just ignored them. Ignoring the controllers was probably with the thought that those that will upgrade already have something else or at least something they like. It's like holding two massive TV remotes with triggers. That's a weird rack for a company to consistently hang their coat on.

The individual peripheral options (eye and face tracking) are ok for us last gen users to give us a quasi-upgrade path...but a new headset should have it all integrated. I'd love to see a deeper dive into the vertical field of view and the distortion. Or more specifically a direct comparison to the Index when considering an update from the OG Vive. I've seen other reviews marking FOV and distortion as the biggest drawback of the Pro 2. I'm currently torn between the Index and the Pro 2 to replace my OG Vive and I'm still on the fence on which one I should get. The high resolution of the Pro 2 is tempting, but the refinement of the Index and the fact that it will cost me less pull me towards the other direction... What should I do?

1:50 Seems like the Vive and Vive 2 both have the mic in the same spot. Just an open tube leading directly to the mic diaphragm, at 90 deg to the mouth which is spitting wind into it. The mic itself sounds GREAT if you're not spitting wind into it. Too bad they made that hard without modifying it. But the mod is simple... a felt furniture pad over the mic hole. That's it. I know it's not a huge leap forward in VR, but I'm still excited to try this out as I've been using the original Vive for awhile now. I've really struggled reading most text on the original vive as the screen door effect on it really blurs out smaller or further away text, so the increase in resolution is what I'm looking forward to most. I am really disappointed that they didn't make new controllers because the vive controllers really are just god awful. The placement of the menu button is genuinely the most annoying thing about the Vive, as I personally always push the button in slightly when flailing my arms around.

@@ArchivedTony TL:DR I love it and it feels like I can actually see when playing VR now. I honestly couldn't see the screen door effect anymore with the pro 2 and I can actually read text quite easily now. My wife seems to be more prone to motion sickness with the newer headset. I still don't have anything like that. It's also much more comfortable and the included headphones are decent enough. I'm not an audiophile so I just like the convenience of pre-attached headphones. Overall it feels like a big upgrade from the original for me personally. I'm not really up to date on the prices of other headsets anymore and I only have the original to compare it too.
