"Range" is not the right question with a boat. Wind, waves, current can all greatly affect range. TIME is a better gauge of performance -- how long it will run on a full charge. If the 3-horse I looked into is any indication, the one in the video will disappoint most. The 3hp would run only 70 minutes at full throttle ---- and required TEN AND A HALF HOURS TO CHARGE. I'll pass until they make my old evinrude useless. Edit: And the 3horse electric had a $3000 tag.

From the little research I've done on this with other boaters using a 50hp electric outboard you get maybe two hours give or take. You're done by mid to late morning and beached most of the day waiting for it to recharge...no thanks.

Heck, I'm a muscle car guy who know also owns a electric car. There's no getting away from the insane power of these motors. And my car charges for free off of solar. Things are changing fast!

@@kf4293 there in lies the problem with this motor, 70 mile range doing 20mph so get on the throttle you’re most likely looking at 1/2 that range on a full charge then you need overnight to recharge so not many people will be boating frequently with this. Also, nothing in boating is inexpensive so although hopeful prices will never come down significantly on these if demand ramps up, greed will see people these prices now and keep them steady no matter what production efficiencies they may see

Yup i just looked it up, the 180E has a range of 70 miles or 3.5 hours at 20 mph and needs overnight to recharge. So basically an excellent option if you plan to put around a lake, river, etc. not meant for off shore trips.

It’s a step above a prototype and 7 years old. The battery technology will advance just as it has in EVs. I have a boat with a 100 gallon tank. Gas like water I assume weighs about 8lbs per gallon. So as the batteries improve you get a lot more range out of a battery pack that weighs about 500lbs. 200 miles will be very doable very soon.

Super heavy, a LOT of heat, short user time if over half throttle, retails 30% more than a gas fitted rig, batteries degrade if not cycled fairly regularly, replacing the mega-batteries will be crazy expensive, lithium mining is massively dirty business, CCP is the main benefactor. User cannot do his own maintenance at all. If there are fire issues as more if these hit the marinas they will refuse to house your boat. Because if you ever tried to extinguish a lithium battery fire you know what I mean.

@@skydude38 I charge my batteries with solar power but I'm only running a little trolling motor and they don't have warranties for saltwater unless you buy a special saltwater Edition motor. They make 500 horsepower gas Motors now but hell they're over $50,000 each minimum. I live on a boat in the Florida Keys and there's boats with 4 and 5 and 6 500 horsepower motors. They got a half a million dollars worth of motors on the back of the boat

Well if your goal is to be able to be at sea for a very long time the best way to go is a hybrid generator system that has heat recovery because running a generator at peak performance parameters gives you a much higher efficiency and longevity. So you don’t necessarily have to not use fuel you just use the fuel to charge the battery that’s improving your efficiency. Generator that can be hidden away in a sound insulated room. This really is the way everyone’s going to be doing it eventually. I know because I make batteries and I’ve studied these systems for quite a while

So in simple terms if your system is more efficient you use less fuel.... If your using your inboard motor to charge lead acid batteries your efficiency is way less because the engine is operating at at less efficient load and rpm. Also running an engine at low load is bad for it.

@@thomastreglia3388 To offer a different view: submarines are electric, cruise ship and big yacht propulsion is electric (Azipods), the electric trolling motor in my garage is about 30 years old and still operates. I just recently replaced a bilge pump on my own boat that survived almost 20 years of year round use in mostly salt, and it was the integrated float switch that failed, the motor still runs fine. Electric is fine in water if it's well made, properly installed and maintained. Cheap and neglected stuff will fall apart quickly, and improperly installed stuff will corrode quickly, so proper use of anodes and isolation transformers for the shore power will be critical. Also noise wise, the quieter the better, especially making long runs or trips with the lady. Those old 2 stroke V6 sound cool for about a minute, then they become a painful annoyance.

It’s a great idea that will take awhile to make good sense. It has a battery that weighs as much as two people, just runs at full speed about 3.5 hours, retails about 30% more than a four stroke gas engine, and the battery generates a LOT of heat and will likely have to be replaced after 6-7 years at a very high cost. Not to mention that lithium mining is a far cry from clean technology, and benefits the CCP more than anyone. My 4-stroke gas engine has been flawless since 2011, burns pretty clean, no smoke or fumes, has many more years in it.

I can see this picking up for recreational boating more quickly than commercial. But competition is going to be interesting. I think we'll see companies making more affordable but smaller PWCs (personal water craft) for people to quickly and easily get out on the water. I'm sure there's a market for converting over to this system but it's difficult to get everyone 'on board' if it's expensive. I suspect you'll have a company (Tesla?) come along with the ability for scale to produce a very efficient, small, packaged system or PWC (hydrofoil?). The energy density of gas and especially diesel cannot currently be beaten by batteries. Batteries will improve but it's a whole different game out there on the ocean especially with commercial and larger fishing vessels.

Unless intentionally busted open it's highly unlikely that Li-ion batteries would pose anywhere near the same environmental hazard that gasoline, diesel fuel and oil do (all of which routinely find their way into our waterways). - Can the batteries short out and catch fire? Any battery can be deliberately shorted out. I'm certain the packs used in this application are well insulated and properly stowed. Barring some sort of massive physical trauma there is perhaps zero chance they can accidentally be shorted. If they are a high quality NCA (like Tesla) or NMC (like Nissan) chemistry and employ a quality Battery Maintenance System (BMS) then it's extremely unlikely they will ever catch fire. This boat almost certainly uses NMC chemistry which is less likely to burn than NCA chemistry. Nissan has been building the LEAF for nearly 12 years with over a half million sold world wide and to date there has not been one reported fire caused by the batteries. Most EV battery fires are caused by high speed impacts or by employing extremely high charging rates. This application charges the batteries using shore power which is most definitely NOT high power :-). - Do you have to remove them for winter storage up north? The Li-ion batteries shouldn't be a problem as long as they don't get submerged. For a marine application they will be extremely well insulated and sealed from the environment. As for temperatures, they drive Tesla's (which use NCA chemistry), in sub-zero weather all the time. Tesla's have been tested at 40 below and work just fine (albeit with considerably less capacity). If using LFP chemistry (LiFePo4) however, care must be taken not to charge them if below 0C or they will be damaged. - How far can you go on a charge? That particular boat has a battery pack with 70kWh of energy. The motor is 180 Hp which is pulling roughly 135 kW of power at wide open throttle. With the motor at full throttle pulling 135kW of juice a 70kWh battery will last roughly 30 minutes at best. If just putting around between 15-20 mph with a boat that small I suspect the motor would be pulling roughly 15kW (20 Hp) of power which should last a good 9 to 10 hours.

I’ve built large lithium battery packs and I can tell you that with the way that diesel engines need to be rebuilt because of their operational parameters going with a generator with heat recovery and running that thing at the perfect RPM and load gives you way more hours. There are companies that put out small generators with heat recovery that will give you like 80,000 hours before the engine needs to be rebuilt, and the efficiency is much much higher. This is basically a hybrid belt system that I’m talking about but also has heat recovery for all your hot water and space heat. So basically you could be at sea for much much longer with the same amount of fuel

I have a 20 year old Bayliner Capri that just sits in my driveway becasue of all of the problems with the inboard motor. I spent a lot of time work and money restoring it so it could be used as a fishing and relic hunting boat, but here it is July and the damn thing is still broke down. I am 100% for electric boat motors as well as automobiles. That is the future no matter how much some people want to trash the technology.

She didn’t ask any questions? “Omg it’s so quiet?” We have established at this point electric motors are quiet. Brushless motors have been quiet for decades. And it’s not “running” sitting at the dock. Electric motors don’t have to idle. The power is on demand. When you use your vacuum cleaner you don’t start it and let it sit there? I know she’s not technical but she’s not stupid either. How about an actual price, different models based on power output, battery type, size, dimensions. Like can you retrofit the battery pack where the gas tank used to be? Is the battery bank an extra cost on top of the engine price?Range on a full charge? How long it takes to get to full charge. Can you run the “house” accessories off the battery bank vs having traditional lead acid deep cycle or agm battery bank? I know it’s a fluff piece to fill an empty time spot, but damn if it was about who Vladimir Putin was fucking this week it would have got 20 minutes.

Elco Motors make a range of electric outboard replacement motors with the same form factor and lower end as a gas motor. They are 90% efficient and available from 5 to 50HP made in the USA. I am completing a small pontoon build with a 20hp, 2 48v 200 amp hour batteries, a propane generator and 900 watts of solar panels. As many have noted, it is mostly about the batteries. Mine with the 24v 200 amp hour systems battery for the trolling motor and general boat 12v power weigh over 400lbs. That means the 180hp probably requires a 96v battery of 1000lb to have any range and no onboard power regeneration is a killer in my opinion. With my propane and solar, I am capable of recharging fully in a short time and running all day. But its a 17' pontoon boat, not a ski boat.

I'm all for most parts. Makes sense storage wise, just gut out tge fuel tank that should already be around the center of weight for the boat, then slap in the batteries. Lots of room under tge floors. Weight of the batteries would be a downfall, weight is everything on a boat. Secondly, maybe range isn't the biggest thing to all. As a fisherman, I generally travel wide open throttle to one end of the lake to the other but spend 80% of the day on my trolling motor. Two points that come with that though is A) on a 2 or 3 day trip you'll need to recharge after each trip. B) sense ill be on my trolling motor all day, is that going to effect how many hours of fishing I get. As many have mentioned, is 10 gallons of gas and a few pints of oil as bad as those batteries will be sitting at the bottom of the lake? Oil and gas will float and get pushed to shore doing very minimal damage realistically. What can be said about the batteries I dont know. I definitely think electric motors are going to have an impact on the future of boating.

The battery tech itself determines how bad it will be at the bottom of the lake. Lead is bad, but the sulfuric acid in a lead acid battery will quickly be stabilized into clay (turns it into gypsum). But keep in mind that gasoline engines also use batteries (but yes, fewer).

There have never been any problems with salt water and electronics. For this to gain any traction with mainstream boaters, it needs to be the same or better performance as gas and cheaper. Battery packs and motors need to have 3000 hours of reliability. Not to mention the enormous dangers of lithium battery fires. I want to see this work, just not ready yet.

the motor itself is a lot more efficient than a gasoline engine, probably 50% just need to consider the extra weight for batteries the benefit is that you do not need extra cost for gasoline, with a solar panel you virtually have free power ev engines are a lot, a loooot, more reliable than fuel engines, 3000 hours is a joke, they are virtually maintenance free if lithium battery fires are a "enormous danger" to you, i wonder what hauling gallons of gasoline is

They need to be 100 percent sealed. 3000 hours might be possible on smooth roads and inshore lakes and rivers but rough landings in ocean swells tend to crack anything and everything rigidly constructed. For powerboats this is still decades away from being good enough.

@@ianmankersen it really depends on what your needs are and what you want i personally have a 5 by 2m motorboat with 400kg and i outfitted it with an evo 6 10hp motor and a single 9000 Wh battery i have 2 solar panels which charge the battery to full within the week ( i generally use the boat weekends only) the motor is virtually maintenance free and what little maintenance is needed ever 6 months is laughable (just checking in the anodes and pins) compared to a stroke engine, a brushless motor as virtually no exposed parts, you'll notice after a while how little wear and tear happens also i do coast the baltic sea, not the saltiest water but still fairly rough sea considering the 15hp 2 stroke engine i had before and the fuel and maintenance cost it took i can say that my new setup is, quiet literally, for free now i can do about 10-11 mph for about 2 hours or i can do about 4 mph for over 18 hours before i drain the battery pack it's not like you're wrong, it might be decades away for certain applications but for my little powerboat going electric is a total gamechanger so, that said, cheers mate!

I need to be able to maintain a minimum of 20 mph for at least 3-4 hours continuously in seas 0-6 feet and that is just one way. I need to have an expectation of 250 nm range in a vessel with a weight of 6,000-12,000 pounds. I would love for electric motors to accomplish this for me, with the added security of solar recharging but the technology isn’t to this level yet. Cheers back at you from Florida USA

The environmental footprint of electric is a scam. Batteries take tons of power to make and when you charge your car or boat you are more than likely charging with coal or natural gas. That is why if you are truly trying to reduce your carbon footprint now, a hybrid car is the best solution. A boat hybrid would be about worthless.

It doesn't have to be. This would be a good use case for solar or wind. Actually both solar and windmills are extremely popular on sailboats, slightly larger of the same could be installed where the boat is kept if the goal is to charge without use of any fuel.

I looked into battery operating my 15' v hull boat. I ran the #'s and it looks possible if I want to go about 5 miles per hour on two lead acid batteries on a 400watt solar panels running a 55lbs thrust motor. Any faster raises the amperage to levels where it gets crazy expensive.

@@timothyberlinski2299 this boat recharges from shore power 120 volts. Recharge time would be 12-14 hours. A pontoon boat at most carries 50 gallons of fuel not 300. The weight of the tank and a full load of fuel would be around 400 lbs. The weight of a Tesla battery capable of powering this boat would weigh 1400 lbs. The 1000 lbs.. difference would greatly affect the performance of this boat. %0 gallons of gas would give you more range than a full battery charge. &0 miles verses 2-3 gallons per mile.

I got a couple of rabbits that won't hide from fireworks and if you drop something loud or heavy near them they don't even flicker a n ear they have experiments going to try and get manatees to avoid boats but the boats move too fast

I live on a cute little house boat anchored out off the Florida Keys. I got a cute little 2-door refrigerator freezer. It's full of frozen meat chicken beef fish lima beans exchange Frozen all day all night on solar power. I got the panels out of the garbage and the batteries to. Even after I turn it off if I put a ziplock bag of water in there it will freeze. I can keep ice cream in it. It runs in the daytime just fine but the two dead battery quit working about an hour or two after sunlight. I used to have to buy one bag of ice at $3 a day and sometimes two bags. I did this for 20 years. My shoulder refrigerators been running since after Hurricane Irma 2017. The science is everywhere and the materials to do it have been around long enough to people are throwing them in the garbage. I love this country.

I can sort of see this. Regular outboard motors are hooked up to a portable gas tank that can be taken in and out of the boat. Inboard boats might have a built in one, but I've never seen an outboard boat with an internal tank. So instead of a gas tank you have a battery pack you can take home, or up to the cottage, to charge. Weight might be an issue. Maybe one of those new industrial packs like Milwaukee is using for their construction grade cordless tools.

@@carpballet Do you have any idea how heavy a full five gallon fuel tank is? Around forty pounds, and that size is standard for outboard motor boats. We're not talking Tesla sized battery. Milwaukee makes a line of cordless tools for serious construction. Like a cement saw that will cut a forty foot long cut in six inches of cement with one charge. Those batteries are huge, but can be inserted with one hand. battery powered lawnmowers that can run for an hour use two battery packs of the size you would use in a cordless drill. Don't get me wrong. I think gas is the better option if you're talking about a long day of cruising, or running a ski boat. But there is a niche market for electric. They already use small ones, and have for decades, for fishing.

And a small boat with an outboard motor certainly would not behave well if you stuck an 880 lb battery in it.
