The love, the caress, the look, the touch that u get from ur love ones worth millions of millions. With all the money of the world u cannot get back the smile or the look from ur grand mama n papa BACK. At the end of the story we have lots of money but what for. On whom to spend they r already gone.

Hi Dan, I'm from Australia but born in Papua New Guinea. My maternal grandfather is a SEETO. When I watched your video...you spoke in a dialect I know as "see yup". I am trying to find out where he comes from. It's a bit hard as he was adopted out together with his brother when they were 8 years old. Anyway enjoyed your clip. There are many Seetos that lived and were born in PNG and I never knew what other countries they ended up in.

Great to hear your roots are from Hoiping China. More than likely your grandfather was from one of the villages in the area. I'm very much interested in where Chinese immigrated to, including Papua New Guinea. Is there still a lot of Chinese people living in PNG? Stumbled across your videos and they make me so happy! My parents are also from Kaiping (Chiak Ham, more specifically) and immigrated to Canada in the 90s. I haven't visited since 2012 and would love to go back soon. My mom's side of the family is also Situ! Super cool to see places that I actually recognize in your videos :) You've shot some location clips where my parents actually lived after they got married!

Wow! so glad I stumbled on this video. My mother and father would always tell me stories of village/farming and from "Hoiping". For a long time I got stuck on Kaiping. My mother has passed away just this year and my father has wanted to revisit. However, he says he too old for the trip now. So, I'm trying to find out as much about the people from this area -their motivations etc. My mother is Cheung and father is Seeto and he too grew up in Papua New Guinea before ending up in Australia. Is there any other resources on the web about these Chinese migrants? Great video!!

Wu, David Yen Ho 吳燕和 1982 The Chinese in Papua New Guinea: 1880-1980. There might have been a presentation about this book at a conference that I was a guest speaker. I didn't go to this presentation but I think it was on the agenda. The conference is called WCILCOS (International Conference Of Institutes And Libraries For Chinese Overseas) I believe there was also a presentation about Situ (Seto, Seeto) connection to Papua New Guinea from 1920 to 1930. Google search WCILCOS to find out more information. Unfortunately I wasn't directly connected to this conference so I don't have access to this information. You might try to contact University of British Columbia because they were the host for this conference in 2012. Thanks for checking out my video. Good luck in your research.

Hey I know I am commenting on a fairly old video but you and I share a last name. I'm not sure if we are related or not but my grandfather spent the last 25 years of his life looking into our family line. I believe my father holds the master pdf file that the book is printed from. From what I see in the book, we have traced it back as early as 1324. I'm sure we have a common link somewhere in there. If you want, i can try to get a copy of this file to add to your records. I would be curious to add to ours if you are willing to.

Great to hear your grandfather was so dedicated in researching his roots. High probablity our families may have crossed paths at some point. If you can get a copy of your file for me, that would be great. If you like, check my video called "Visit Szeto Clan In Hong Kong", where the Hong Kong Clan discusses their research of the family tree.

Stumbled onto this video 10 years later, my mother's side of the family came from Hoiping, also with the last name Seto. My grandparents on my maternal side immigrated to Canada in the late 60s, I've always wondered how the village looked like. I doubt things look the same now but still awesome to be able to get a glimpse of what it was 10 years ago.

From what I understand, In Hoiping (Kaiping), students study Mandarin in school. Most young people can speak fluent Mandarin. Some young students told me they start studying English in grade two. By and large English is not very prevalent in everyday speech. Standard Cantonese not so much from what I heard. Thanks for checking out my video on Visit To Grandparents' Village.

Hi Dan, Well after my last note to you, I'd been doing a little research and am going to Taishan and Hoiping next week! Apparently my paternal grandfather's (Cheung) village has now been located in Taishan and my uncle is accompanying me there. As I was making that journey, I thought I'd dig around a little more and locate my grandfather's (Seeto) village and my wife's grandfather (also a Seeto). It so happens my Seeto grandfather is from Sai Tau Tsui (West Head Point). So I'm going to look for it when I get there. Any suggestions as to how I can get to the village?
@DanSetoChineseCanadianRootsTV
@DanSetoChineseCanadianRootsTV 10 жыл бұрын
Great to hear you are going to find your roots. If you could write the Chinese characters, I can check through some Seto villages for you. Most of the villages are close to Chiak Hom Village. In Mandarin known as Chikan. Some names of villages change over time, so some people and drivers may not know the old names, but generally local people would know anyway. Does your uncle speak the local dialect?

If he's a younger person, probably not. If his name Seto has the "z" as in Szeto, he probably has roots from Hong Kong. Prior to that, we would have to trace back to his ancestor's village or town in China. I know prior generations from both my mom's and dad's villages went to different areas in California.
