I was there....you really need two FULL days to see everything. The place is HUGE !! The splendor and beauty are unimaginable ! I actually prefer Summer Palace to Forbidden City bc of the gorgeous landscaping. Stay and watch one of the most beautiful sunsets you'll ever see (stand near near the long corridors to get the best view). Such beauty is simply breathtaking !

This is a very nice video, professionally filmed, and includes quite a few areas tourists cannot access. It is showing you a magical place in the best possible weather and the video uses soothing music to give you a sense of tranquility. But the reality check will hit you as soon as you arrive to this tourist spot. Hundreds of buses, thousands of people lined up for tickets, stench (mostly BO of the locals), long lines everywhere you go (once you've entered), huge police presence, ridiculous prices (whether it's snacks, beverages, or souvenirs), and quite a few 'attractions' are actually permanently closed. You will be able to 'enjoy' heavy pollution, lots of hawking and spitting, and loud munching of stinky noodles (the smell of spicy noodles is pervasive throughout the palace compound, especially in the summer), as well as thousands upon thousands of mosquitoes. It is portrayed as heaven, but in fact is a cesspool.
