I'm spending two days at the biggest theme park in Japan. Located in Nagasaki's Sasebo area, this place just blows my mind.

As a dutch person... This is so weird yet very cool! The village part is really well done, it does feel and look like a actual dutch village. When I visit Japan again I'd like to visit this place and go to the restaurant "Ja, 3 bier en een patatje oorlog graag" Maybe bike around yell at some unsuspecting Japanese visitors "Kijk uit verrekte mongol! Je loopt op het fietspad" Just to give those Japanese folks the genuine Dutch experience

hmm… the dutch expression you use there is not actually very nice at all. probably why, after hundreds of years of trade with your country, the japanese people decided to re-create your world, minus the rude people. i’m pretty sure i will only be visiting this nicer version of dutch culture.🌷

The put a lot of effort into this park. As a Dutch person I really appreciate that. Some area remind me of the city Leiden, with is the nearest city to me. The old city center are similar. I also loved seeing all the tulips. I live in a area surrounded by tulip fields, so that made the park feel like home.

In Nagasaki Prefecture, where this theme park is located, there used to be a special place set aside for trading with foreign countries. In particular, trade with the Netherlands was very active, which is why a theme park called Holland Village was built about 40 years ago. The theme park was so well received that they decided to build a bigger one near it. And this Huis Ten Bosch was built. The facilities and even the city's coat of arms were built with the cooperation and advice of the Dutch government, faithfully reproducing buildings that actually exist in the Netherlands, and the stone statues attached to the buildings were also made by Dutch cultural property restorers. The Palace Huis Ten Bosch is a replica of the Dutch royal palace, faithfully reproduced with permission.

It looks like this strange mixture of Gouda, Leiden, and Utrecht. doesn't look like amsterdam at all to me. That "church" in front of hotel amsterdam is a replica of the Gouda Stadhuis, very well done, good replication of the Gouda market square.

I'm dutch and it does look very genuine to Amsterdam, i used to study there for a while. I wonder if many of those buildings are just standing empty, in Amsterdam you would be able to look inside the windows a lot and there would be many cats in the windows, haha. In the square with the japanese food the small buildings looked like the ones in the Wales park in Japan. I guess they thought it would be close enough. A lot of work went into that park and I think it's funny how dutch things are seen as so exotic and interesting in Japan.

@@geerd1 Yeah they did well, no foam walls like Disney version of things, haha. This looks like it was build to last and frankly that hotel was way fancier than I'd expect in Amsterdam. Even the little harbor looks like it does locally, I wonder who the boats belong to now the park no longer owns it. Maybe those rich people that bought a house there.

As a Dutch person (from the home city of Miffy/Nijntje) this would give me a giant mindfuck. Being Dutch, in japan, in a dutch village, which is Japanese. I think it's quite flattering to Dutch Culture too, it's pretty damn big and impressive! I wonder if some Japanese have an idealistic view of the Netherlands the same way some Dutch people view Japanese culture as amazing.

What's funny is that most of it is so close to reality that the bits they got wrong (or took some creative license with) stand out extra badly. Things like the Irish music, countless French-inspired names, "Castelo de Cheese" (which is Portuguese - French - English mushed together), a sake bar and karaoke club side by side, etc. And of course that there are no cyclists! But hiring a troupe of employees to cycle around and yell at visitors all day is probably a bit much :)

しにちさんこんにちは、オランダ人です。The canals are a mix of canals you'll see in the city of Amsterdam (canals directly next to the streets) and those in the city of Utrecht (with walkways below street level and just above water level). The building at 15:54 is not a church, but the city hall of the city of Gouda. The tower which is visible in many shots, but can be seen well at 15:57 is the Domtoren (Dom tower) of Utrecht.

@@Shinichisworld At 16:27 you asked what "Bikken Bikken" means. "Bikken" means as much as "munching", so it's a slang-word for eating. (We [Dutch people] just say "bikken', so why exactly it is used double in this case, I don't know.) There are many other Dutch slang-words for eating (yeah, we like eating... 😂), such as nassen, kanen, schransen, to name a few. 😋

Beautiful tour. Only recently, I found out about this place from a you tube video of a Japanese family, parents of the very cute baby girl Yuika who has been on you tube several times. I am Dutch but an immigrant to USA so this is my view. It looks as if you are in a new Dutch town centuries ago because this place is super clean. The grunge that settles on the road and buildings is not here in Huis ten Bosch. It probably will be in 400 years. It is also the lack of seeing modern high rises that makes it look like it is centuries ago. I read business has slowed because of the pandemic so my suggestion to the theme park is : to be totally authentic, you must sell drop (salty licorice) and you will attract Dutch people who are living in other countries to come to Japan. Now for the gentleman who made the video: I can't believe you finally pronounced " Nijntje" correctly. That vowel "ij" is the most difficult for non-Dutch to learn. BTW Nijntje is a nickname for the Dutch word for "rabbit" ( konijn) with the "tje" meaning " little" or what a dictionary may define as "diminuative"

"I actually feel like I'm traveling in a foreign country where everyone is japanese" That's funny, because when I moved to Amsterdam I felt like I moved to a different country where people just happen to speak dutch, since Amsterdam is so different from the rest of the country. I love it here though. It's funny to see dutch culture is so populair they build a theme park in dutch style on the other side of the globe. It kinda looks like a caricature of the Netherlands though, it wouldn't fool me, it doesn't look very authentic, but it's still pretty dope.

6:13 "Ridderbrug" translates to "knights bridge". This bridge is based up on a real bridge design that uses leverage to open and close. This one in this park unfortunately does not have this feature. 7:00 That mill is small compared to many in the Netherlands. Do note there are also smaller mills. I do see clearly that this one was scaled down. 7:30 Look at the mill closest to you, this clearly is meant to serve to drain water from a specific area. That gap in the side (under that spoked wheel) that is where the screw should be. It will pump water from this side to the other side. I however doubt these are functional like the real ones as there is no direct reasons for these to function like that. 9:44 Waag = Weigh house. The weigh house is a building where goods were weighed, to prevent cheating during trade. So it is actually a Dutch word that is at least from the 1600's, probably even earlier. 12:56 The sign on the stall says "proost", this is Dutch for "cheers" (Kanpai) 14:19 That would be the original Dutch name, yes this character is created in the Netherlands by a man called Dick Bruna. The Brits calling it Miffy, which unfortunately transferred to other countries as well. Nijntje, speak as nine-tje. You pronounced it right a little later, very good :) 15:04 Klompen in Dutch, wooden clogs in English. Mostly farmers and fishermen used them. Farmers because it made it easier to walk on their land as they were pretty wide and kept your feet from becoming wet and nothing could really push trough. Another big plus is that you don't need to undo your laces or anything else to get them off. They are more comfortable then you think, yes you need to get used to them obviously. Also knowing how to use them is a good idea to learn. Good tip would be to curl up your toes, this makes it easier to walk without losing the clogs. 16:27 "Bikken" is Dutch slang for eating, it's not used in the way used in the park though. "Bikken" is good, "bikken bikken" is wrong. I would recommend getting Grolsch instead of Heineken, it tastes a lot better. Heineken tastes like pond water. 22:42 That blue os Cobalt Blue, which is the blue on the Dutch flag.

Thank you. We loved it. We are living in Holland. In Friesland. We have are on language ‘frysk’. I still walk in klompen. It’s more normal here. We have a real klompenmaker here. By the way have you ever had Some stroopwafels? Real dutch and so Nice!

@Pieter Voogt Very dangerous to call the Netherlands "Holland", especially when you live in good old Fryslân!! 😜 Though these days things have mellowed down a bit, there's a long, nasty, sorted history between the Hollanders and the Friesians. There are still certain places in our beautiful province, where you could get into heaps of trouble when you say that out loud! 🤜💥✨🤕😂

@@bishplis7226 Yup it all is coming back to me. Me and my friend were really drunk and had no internet on our phones. We got lost exploring the city and when we made our way back to the ferris wheel we remembered where our place was. Good times

It doesn’t look like Amsterdam at all. It looks like a Dutch caricature. Which makes it complicated, because the center of Amsterdam is a Dutch caricature. Around that center you have a more normal Dutch city. 15:52 Looks like a late Middle Ages Dutch city hall. Not like a church at all. Bikken means eating a lot of simple but quite nutritious food.

Odd though that not anywhere is silence. Loud music everywhere. Even in the hotel there's the hum of bass notes. Luckily inside the room it's quiet. 👀

The fact that someone turned your country/culture into themepark is so weird. But it's great haha. I think it's largely because of the special tradeposition the Dutch held with Japan for so long. Until we messed it up and started bringing priests.

I visited Sasebo in 2019. Huis Ten Bosch was very expensive for me, so I can't pay the ticket. Is Spanish the flowers are "tulipanes" and the tipic shoes are "zuecos".

The Netherlands and Japan have had a long trading and cultural relationship which dates back to the Early 1600s.
