I grew up (circa 1967 -1980) in the Binghamton N.Y. All these carousels bring back wonderful memories for me . The Endicott Johnson swimming pool was another experience I cherish . Life appeared to be more simple during this time for a multitude of reasons (youth / naïveté / zeitgeist) . I’m grateful to have grown to adulthood during this period in our country’s history . Our empire is in it’s ‘twilight zone’ and I’m sad beyond measure .

I grew up in Binghamton and remember the one in Recreation Park especially. These days I live in Geelong Australia, and we have an original Herschel carousel here on the waterfront!

That’s cool. We now look when we see a carousel in a park if it a Herschel. It’s surprising how many we have found. Thanks for the comment.

When I was in high school I worked at Highland Park, sometimes at the carousel. In the fall I would clean it and get it covered up for winter, then in spring uncover it and make it ready for the summer. It was a dangerous piece of equipment to work on. 8-)

The carousel at Ross Park uses the turnaround plate for the trolleys that used to run through Binghamton.

@@ZephyrTravels No Problem just thought it an interesting fun fact. I know growing up the carousels had a card you could ask for that said which carousel you rode and when you completed the circuit you could bring your proof to Ross Park and they would have a prize for you. In the early 90s it was a jewel and some kind of certificate. Not sure if they still do it, I do know you had to ask the operator of the carousel for the proof and they usually had a stack of cards in the drawer.
@ZephyrTravels2 жыл бұрын
@@Dogeathotdog1 They still do that. We road all the carousels and got a pin as a reward.

I was very surprised when I saw this video that there was no mention about the carousel at Recreation Park having paintings of scenes from The Twilight Zone as this carousel and the park was inspiration for one of the most notable episodes entitled, “Walking Distance”. The park was one that Rod Serling, the show creator frequently went to as a child growing up in Binghamton.

I did not know the of the Twilight Zone connection to the carousel in Recreation Park. Thanks for sharing this with us.
@spindriftbeach6082 Жыл бұрын
I used to ride that carousel when I was a kid. There was a wooden pillar where Rod Serling had carved his initials as a boy. There was also an ex USAF fighter jet us kids could climb into the cockpit and imagine flying in combat.

If you haven’t been, you’ll have to check out the carousel at Olcott Beach. That is a refurbished 1920’s Herschel Carousel. (I was reading that on their website 🙂) My uncle would volunteer at the rides at Olcott Park. He mostly was at the carousel.

When I was a kid, my family would spend our summers in Summerset, just down the road from Olcott Beach. I can remember going there and riding the rides and planing the games.
