The beautiful barracks of Ruthven near Kingussie in the Highlands of Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
Little known and often missed by visitors to this area, Ruthven Barracks was the site of the final Jacobite battle of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s 1745/1746 ill-fated campaign.
Just days after being defeated at Culloden on the 16th April 1746 thousands of Jacobites descended up on British garrison outpost at Ruthven near Kingussie much time the horror of the handful of British redcoat soldiers based here!

Och goodness, that’s where I grew up 😊 There’s a churchyard tucked beside the river in Kingussie which has some really old graves in it. John Macpherson, Ruthven barrack master is buried there, along with his children. The stones have incredible lettering on them.

Used to pass this place regulariy on the way to my German Stalker pals at the Invreshie House Hotel at nearby Kincraig, back in the eighties, stunning area. Lighting at night is positively haunting and dramatic. Always meant to have a look round the Barracks but sadly never got around to it. Really enjoyed your video. Used to do battlefield renactments with an 18th Century replica three pounder, RFA Period Uniform the lot. The coat and tricorn hat was surprisingly effective in inclement Highland Weather. The 45 is a particular old hobby. One of the first things you learn about the 45 is that many of The Redcoats were in fact Scottish. The Argyll Militia,The Royal Scots(Pontuis Pilutes Bodyguard) The North British Fusiliers(Ayrshire),Gardiners Dragoons,The Glasgow Militia,The Cameronians, The Black Watch. Add to that Dutch,German, and French Hueganots and The 45 is not so clear cut as it would at first seem. There were English County and Household Regiments there they were by no means alone however. There is a recorded incident at Ruthven of a Sergeant Molloy and a limited number of men defending The Barracks against a Superior Jacobite force when this was I do not know. The Jacobite's later burned the place. Dragoons inccidentaly could function as cavalry or infantry being 'armed to the teeth,' with sword and pistol,as well as musket and bayonet as opposed to cavalry carbine.

I’ve been right by Ruthven Barracks, but it was not a stop on our tour ☹️. My husband has gotten to explore there, though, when he was in the Kingussie area for a Clan MacPherson gathering. Even though I did not get to explore Ruthven, I did stay overnight in Newtonmore, just a wee bit down the A86. And, though it was after regular hours, I had arranged for a private tour of the Clan MacPherson Museum in Newtonmore. That area has a very special meaning for our family.

Sir, have you done or could you do a video on Fernihurst Castle??? I have done part of my family history. On that part I traced the family back to Scotland, to Fernihurst Castle. The last I knew the Castle still stood and was still in the Carr family, owned by a Carr who was living in England. My Grandmother Tongue (Carr), before she wed my Grandfather. This is on my Mom's side. The name originally was Kerr or Ker. They were brothers, and built in 2 different places. My family comes from the Kerr brother, which the spelling was changed to Carr when they went to England. Thank you for your work.

I realize that places like this are designated as monuments and not restored, but it must be difficult to resist the urge to do so. This place isn't ancient at all by the standards of your country, so I'd think there would be a desire to restore a place like this which really isn't in all that bad condition. At some point all the water getting into the site will degrade the mortar and it will start to fall down, which would be a shame. It is interesting to see the bones of a place to see how it was built, though. On a personal note, I now know that for you horseback riding on a 90 degree day would be pure hell for you. Stay strong out there in the country when you visit! :)

I think if this place was restored it would ruin the history. It’s the way it is because for the Jacobites this was their last show of resistance against British rule. Even ruined it’s beautiful and they do maintain it to stop it getting any worse condition so it will never fall doen

What an achievement by the stonemasons and builders to erect those stone structures most of which have stood the test of time.

Now I know why All Scotsmen call their home country Bonnie Scotland. it is beautiful land there, the fort was built on a nice piece of land, wasn't it? is commands a beautiful view, I can only imagine what it would have looked like with the Fort in new condition and no modern roads or building in sight. Horses would have been everywhere of course, but it would have been a sight to behold. Also, I had no idea that you are six foot four inches tall! Holy crap man! I do not get that impression from your metal detectorist videos, you have a tendency to film yourself from relatively high level so it kind of hides the fact that you are that tall! Thanks for sharing the information about the rulers of the time and the history of the fort. it's nice to hear about a time when the Scots got the better part of the British, since they were usually so aggressive with their own laws, And I can see how the 12-15 British would have become immediately unpopular for showing up and thinking to enforce their own idea of justice on the locals, that would have gone over like a lead balloon, and the Jacobites explained it to the British I guess too! LOL I was thinking that the British building their own roads and connected their forts together, but what one side builds, the other side could use as well, and with only a very limited number of men in each fort, I can't imagine how they thought that the idea would have worked? just because they won the battle of Culloden doesn't mean they had won the war against the Jacobites! I mean, we ARE talking about religion here, not a topic without a great deal of passion involved and because of the loss at Culloden, the Jacobites would have been itching for a bit of retribution.
