Super cool! I'd argue 'Greg's Drinking Song' is more of a parody of Irish folk music though.

To be fair, they both are parodies of Irish folk music! But any attention the Lightning Thief Musical gets is a win in my book.

I think these videos are great but the one thing they're missing is when they musically reference an entire genre or style of music - like "Greg's Drinking Song" is definitely an homage to classic Irish tavern chants or "Who's the New Guy" since it's a traditional MT expository song
@DelGuy03
@DelGuy03 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, "Who's the New Guy" is hard to handle in a comparison like this, because it's really a wink at the audience breaking through the fourth wall (acknowledging that this is a TV series), and not an homage to a particular genre of song.
@minoutruong9207
@minoutruong9207 2 жыл бұрын
I would argue "Who's the New Guy" is a reference to Legally Blonde's "Is He Gay or European" - the melody also has some references there

"Tell Me I'm OK, Patrick" is a gorgeous song, even though it's also hilarious

And the attribution to "Alfie" is 100% accurate. Lyrically, rhythmically, harmonically, it's clearly a direct stencil -- and both hilarious and touching, like so many of the songs.

Ngl, the talking part goes harder than it's allowed to do "Seriously, Patrick. Was I sick the day in school where they taught you to be a normal person? It just feels like there's something fundamental I'm missing out on. Like, is there an instruction manual? You get what I'm saying, Patrick? It just, it just feels like everyone is in this cabal of normal people, and they're all laughing at me like I'm the jester in my own Truman Show. Patrick, tell me what the secret is. Is there a manual? Do you have a manual? I know you have a manual, Patrick! I know it's in your trunk, Patrick! "

I have to make an argument that “You Go First” is definitely referencing “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now” by Celine Dion as well. It’s clearly pulling from “Total Eclipse of the Heart” later, with the dancer and everything, but musically it even sounds a lot like “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now.”
@Biboline1
@Biboline1 4 жыл бұрын
It's a Jim Steinman reference

@TheWifeRottenRomance
@TheWifeRottenRomance 4 жыл бұрын
Siskin I mean, okay, but musically it‘s specifically like It’s All Coming Back to Me Now, and the beginning of the video is clearly following that video. Then segues into Total Eclipse of the Heart. Which while both Steinman, it certainly doesn’t sound/look like Air Supply or Barry Manilow. It’s 80s power ballads, much like Lost in the Woods from Frozen II, or You Snuck Your Way Right Into My Heart by Love Händel.
@TheWifeRottenRomance
@TheWifeRottenRomance 4 жыл бұрын
Jillyanne Ann It’s 80s power ballads in general, but the most Heart-like thing is really the hair. But it’s not like Bonnie Tyler’s hair wasn’t a mile high. 😛

I may be crazy, but I feel like Maybe This Dream is melodically similar to Maybe from Next to Normal. Like, visually it’s fully Sleeping Beauty, but “Maybe this dream won’t be like the last” and “Maybe my last lucid moment has passed” are too similar for me not to think it’s a reference, haha.
