Happy to announce the MIDI file is now available here: domrt.gumroad....
========================
The process of creating this took 74 hours in total. I transcribed the song by ear and inputting midi notes for each phrase. After the base-transcription was complete, I went back through the piano roll and assigned each note a different channel (e.g 4 notes in a chord would have 4 different channels). I then imported the midi track into MAM and recorded that, as well as the output from midiChordAnalyser to form the visual display. From there, it was a simple task of editing it together!

Every time I listen to something by Jacob, I go through four steps; I realize I honestly don’t want to listen because it hurts my ego. Then I get mesmerized by the beauty and prowess. Then I get overwhelmed with a sense of greatness by what I’m experiencing and then finally somehow I am inspired to keep making music even though I’ll never be even close to this greatness. It’s a rollercoaster. I have to say, we are in the presence of true art and genius.

aside from this chord, the chord generator couldn't detect some normal chords as well though, such as D F# B C# E at 6:05 is actually a Dmaj13 or Dmaj7 6/9.

@@Kingstonlomusic I think it's trying to go off of implied chords, not from a theory standpoint, like those notes make it seem like it's a D major chord when it actually sounds and functions as F#m with a 6 and an 11 because of where it's leading

Jaco collier is the most important musician of our generation, hes not a pop star, although i could see him having some hits at some point on mainstream radio... hes just so adept at bridging thr gap between his feelings and the notes, and he has more musical knowledge than anybody out there, and hes humble about sharing it. Cant believe how cool this new concept is, its absolutely amazing. Great job!!!! Love from Puerto Rico

Thank you for your huge hard work (I know that is an understatement, just the transcribing alone is top, but then the video editing? wow); it's work like this that make me want to get back onto the wagon. I was a bit skeptical of Mr Collier when I first learned about him, but he has obliterated my uninformed misjudgments.

@brendansanning1001 6 жыл бұрын
Out of curiosity, what were some of your past "misjudgments" as you put? I'm interested to hear, as I don't believe I personally ever had any skeptical thoughts on his works, and I'd like to hear another's perspective!
@barrowmeoct04
@barrowmeoct04 6 жыл бұрын
All that skepticism was a long time ago. I think what might have done it was the immediate reaction to one of his acapella videos, perhaps the visuals, they kind of looked like a mockery, and maybe the music seemed... immature? childish??? (it might have been one of his Jolly/happy pieces which might have irked me a little, the Flintstones perhaps? ), that was my first gut impression, and unfortunately I allowed that hasty judgment to stop me from actually listening to the music. BUT, I think the biggest factor is this; what happened is that first exposure to his music was a total sensory overload for me, it was too much. It was almost disturbingly overwhelming, and I think I felt uncomfortable, maybe a tad shocked too; Jacob can tsunami you with unexpected harmonic and rhythmic changes, and really full blown orchestral waves, leaving you asking WTF? I can see how some people might experience some uneasiness at first listen if they are used to a more gentle approach into music. I've seen a couple of comments here and there expressing a similar sentiment (very few comments though). Anyway some time, somewhere later I actually listened carefully and was 'very' impressed especially with the harmonies; they reminded me of Take-6. But what really got me was when I first watched Jacob duet with Jamie Cullum; Crazy she calls me, the Maida Vale session. His piano playing floored me, COMPLETELY. From the word GO he was dropping in those 'wrong notes' that just made me smile and my ears pricked up with excitement. And, that solo shattered any doubt that he is something 'very' unique, or at least deeply knowledgeable about what he was doing in his music, all doubts were killed then and there. This was on par with some of my favourite jazz pianists, surprises all over the place and such unique jagged harmonies, I had no idea where he would go from one moment to the next and I was loving it. Maybe when I first watched him I underestimated him, he looks so young, so green, again, almost childlike and I may have just dismissed him purely on that basis. Stupid I know! I guess many of us make prejudicial rash judgments from time to time.

I really love this, and I can't help but chime in with the stupor over how good Jacob is. However I also sometimes feel like he wants to do too much. In his "Harmony explained" video with Herbie Hancock Jacob asks him how in the face of infinite musical possibilities Herbie has the courage to choose. They talk about how musical greatness sometimes lies in what notes are *not* played. It occurs to me that Jacob still at an early stage in life and musical development struggles to kill his babies and leave out some of the (allbeit briliant) complications for the sake of direction and coherence. It's like he rushes to get through all the ideas flowing through his mind at once. I don't know if anyone agrees with me on this. I'll keep following this guy and listening intently to one of the greatest musical talents of a generation.

@SyahmyAlim
@SyahmyAlim 5 жыл бұрын
i could totally see your point but at the same time most of his harmonic choices feels very accurate to what (i assume) he wants to elicit in someone that is listening to it. honestly there are harmonic choices of his that are simply too complicated but i feel that if those are the specific way he wants to express them, i'm totally cool with that! he is capable of writing simpler harmony like in sky above and make me cry when he feels like that is the best way to convey his intention but again, if he thinks that his message would be better conveyed using these really complex harmonies, i'm all for it. perhaps he will mature into playing more direct, simpler harmonies that can connect to others more. but honestly, i love his music due to this playful, almost adventurous approach of his in music writing which i think serves a great deal towards making him one of the best of the decade

@@SyahmyAlim Sometimes I personally feel like he is more about adding complexity for complexity sake, less is often more. We can think of Bach's counterpoint, the best pieces (it's my opinion here, by I feel like it's shared) are very well balanced with complexity and simplicity.
