"Don't be a Redditor; be a person who uses Reddit." This reminded me of the fact that Redditors argue over the validity of other Reddit users' opinions _unironically_ based on their karma/upvote score. Like they unironically point out how much karma they have as a hail-mary attempt to win an argument. (Except they don't see it as a hail-mary attempt, but an actual legitimate way to delegitimize somebody's opinion LMAO.) It's the equivalent of the pathetic/weird non-argument of going into somebody's Facebook profile and posting their profile pic in the comment thread. During the very short time I used reddit (I wanted to see what all the hype was about), I noticed that there's a huge problem with dogpiling in comment sections. It seems that everyone immediately dogpiles onto someone who has a different opinion or argument and mass downvote them without even bothering to think and listen, so it ends up discouraging people who want to share a different point of view from saying anything because of the mob mentality, so comment sections end up being echo chambers and that can easily become very toxic and dangerous.
@AT-vp8qw2 жыл бұрын
Yes, HUGE emphasis on the echochamber part. I understand maybe debating someone with different opinions than you, but it's pointless if you're not open minded or receptive to changing your mind. People will dogpile on to someone just to reinforce their own beliefs and get that extra dopamine hit of having their opinions validated. This even goes outside of reddit or social media. It seems like people in general refuse to use their brains capacity to think outside themselves and everything they believe to be true. It does nothing but keeps us and humanity stagnant.

When I regularly used reddit I was depressed as fuck. Constantly being dogpiled on for saying something while watching someone else word my exact point in a slightly different way get praise on praise. People immediately attacking me instead of asking for clarification. Often then refusing to apologize for their misunderstanding even when the issue was solely their fault. Mods, as said in the video, deciding they don't like one thing you said and banning you while letting their toxic buddies run absolutely rampant. Incels that talk about how other human beings should be forced to give them intimacy either socially or by government mandate. Talking about murdering, raping, ect out in the open without any real consequences. The bullying, the harassment... people following your every post just to downvote it and silence you because you said one thing they didn't like three months ago. I came across a KZbin channel some time ago where incels were openly discussing how best to grape women and children and get away with it, how to physically abuse women etc. The channel owner, who has meanwhile been arrested and is to my knowledge in prison (I hope so!!! I only heard about it because he is quite well known), was heavily promoting that. I only came across that channel because a then friend, who I didn't yet know was an incel and a serial killer, had sent me a link and I had no idea what it was about. Anyway, I was so shocked I was physically sick. Then this channel was being discussed on another channel. People were all saying how great and wonderful the channel owner of the above mentioned channel was. I was the only person who pointed out that he actually promoted extreme violence including grape and murder. I was being inundated and I do mean inundated with threats, death threats, bullying, personal insults etc for months afterwards... I'm going through similar now again though not related to that channel but simply because I pointed something out that I have personal experience of, on a thread where everybody was saying what they WANT to believe, though none have the personal experience. Same thing again... weeks and weeks of getting inundated with personal insults, death threats, curses, wishes for the worst... All on KZbin, never been on Reddit.

Not a big Reddit page, but I got banned from a page that discusses a YA book series (it's A Court of Thorns and Roses) because basically I disagreed with the mob one too many times. I was trying to point out some flaws in the series and how I would change them (I'm also a writer and find critiquing other works is a good way to keep my own skills sharp). I got the usual "if you hate the series, why are you here" and I said "don't hate the series, it's one of my favorites, but that doesn't make it perfect". Got banned for harassment. All because the mob ganged up on me and I fought back. It's a microcosm of the larger issue on Reddit, and social media in general, that mob mentality is as prevalent today as it was in the days of witch burning. People ask "how could so many have let that atrocity happen?" and the simple answer is, no one wants to go against the crowd because its a common, inherently human, trait to want to be liked and in our minds, you must think alike to be accepted. And the other reason is that people are afraid to stick out and go against the crowd, are afraid of the mob overtaking them and shutting them down again. I still think Twitter is worse than Reddit about the mob mentality though, imo. I've seen so many threads where people make inflammatory statements and then say "I'm turning off notifications, so don't even try to argue with me" and they also alter the ability of who can respond to the post *cough* Amber Heard *cough* because they're afraid of having to explain their view point, because they know they can't.

I got permanently banned from r/offmychest because of an innocuous comment I made that wasn't pandering. - Girl is venting because her bf rudely dismisses her claim of being unknowingly "needle spiked" causing her to black out while she was out drinking at the club while he was at work - She made it home alone that night despite being "blacked out" and didn't even call her bf to let him know until a day later - She says she's been r4yped a couple times before over the past 3 years when clubbing while her bf was at work I just called her out on her bs, stating that her boyfriend was probably tired of her going to the club alone while he's at work especially after she's claimed to be assaulted which could've had an equally sus story and that the relationship isn't going to last. I was downvoted into oblivion saying that I'm victim blaming and that her boyfriend is the one who's a POS for brushing it off and that she should leave him. Then my comment was deleted and I was banned by the moderator who undoubtedly had either a fedora, pink hair, or both. Reddit is an echo chamber of parotting each other's opinions looking to seek approval and virtual pats on the back from the herd. They are practically NPCs who need other people to tell them what to think and are too scared to form their own opinions. It's not a loss as I've only ever posted a handful of times there because I can't stand the community, especially after growing up on 4chan.

Reddit users have been awfully vindictive and malicious. I've got nothing but the past two elections to thank, as to how rampant the toxicity levels have gotten on that platform. Just in this entire year alone rather, past couple months, I've had the following happen to me: I would get brigaded for expressing honest, non-instigating opinions. Downvote parades would happen, I'd get confrontational users who'd swipe at me with a snarky remark then blocking me after. I've gotten accounts banned because the hate from them was so great, that even when my account wasn't violating any rules, there must've been alts or a small band of people that hated me so badly to orchestrate a ban on my account. They've even gotten my throwaway account banned too and it only has one post to it, where I post for mental health reasons. I keep coming back, just to show them that I will not be intimidated by their childish antics to stop using a platform. A platform that they feel that they own because what, they farm for karma? That they feel like their tenure staggers mine and other users in my position and that their say is law? No, to me, they're just names on a freaking platform. Nothing more. My advice for people who use reddit - avoid opinion-based subreddits at all costs. Nothing good can come from them, a lot of them are harbored by tense and edgy individuals who'll spin everything and anything out of context to make themselves seem righteous in the end. Avoid politically-based subreddits too if you can help it. Avoid even venting subreddits too which is hard to do because some days you want to vent. But even that is filtered because everyone practically judges your vent on whether or not it's valid, when it doesn't matter because all you want to do is vent. Reddit is just full of self-righteous, self-patting, no-life, arm-chair keyboard warriors with too much damn time on their hands to do what they do.

Reddit is like all the deadly sins in a single website: Pride: Redditors see themselves as superior to everyone else and display all of their "accomplishments" as a way to virtue signal how superior they are. Greed: Redditors always want more, no matter what you give them, they will always ask for more and more, they are never satisfied. Wrath: Redditors are constantly angry and spewing hate upon everyone that they disagree with, it's not uncommon for them to wish harm and even death to their "enemies". Envy: This is by far the easiest to notice, Redditors are the most envious and jealous beings in this universe, they absolutely despise anyone that "has it better" than them and they use that as an excuse to be rude to those people and wish that bad things happen to them. This would also explain Reddit's love for communism, an ideology that is fully built with envy from the ground up. Lust: Redditors famously think that online prostitution and online pornography are good and that there is nothing wrong with being addicted to those things and participating on them. Gluttony: There is a reason why the most famous stereotype of a "Redditor" is being morbidly obese. Sloth: Again, easy to notice. Redditors are extremely lazy and don't put effort into anything, in fact they even see laziness as a virtue and something that should be encouraged. And again, this also explains why they love communism so much since they hate having to work to achieve anything and instead want everything to be handed out to them in a silver platter by the government.

reddit has destroyed my mental health. Hanging around meme subreddits has gotten me harassed for being lgbtq. Hanging around lgbtq subreddits has gotten me insulted for not believing in communism, being called a fascist enabler because i'd consider myself a libertarian (freedom of speech, bodily autonomy and stuff) with some social values (regulations, helping the poor, universal healthcare with the option of going private etc.). Hell even going onto a subreddit as seemingly innocent as r/cats you will see people calling the owner an abuser for not having spayed their cat yet. I recently joined Reddit. I soon learned that there is this thing called "karma" and if people don't like what you say, they give you a thumbs down. If you have negative Karma, you can't comment on a thread until your karma improves. I was a assigned a ridiculous screen name and not realizing I only had a short time to change it, I left it as it was. When I tried to cancel my account, there was a message that came up over and over: "something went wrong. Please try again later". When I tried to write Reddit about cancelling at /r help my message was cancelled by the bot. They literally will not let me cancel my account. Why do you get TWO screen names? Why is the site so confusing and worst of all, why do the bots monitor and censor anything Reddit doesn't agree with? This site, if I had to guess, is run by the Chinese government or at least it acts as though it does. Reddit is the WORST site I have ever had the displeasure of using and I will find a way to cancel my account if it's the last thing I do.

The silencing of different opinions is a big concern of mine, not even just on reddit. The thing is that it seems like popular opinions in the real world are made to look less popular online. The herd mentality also can make things feel more isolating. The irony is that the people who mostly talk about how inclusivity is a good thing, also seem to be the same ones who criticise those that deviate.

i admit this all sounds a bit dogwhistle-y to me. i can’t judge your views at all since i don’t know what they are, but i’ve honestly grown a little wary of people who mention things like a ‘silent majority’ or ‘silencing of opposing opinions’ because of all my experience with extremists. such language has, unfortunately, been adopted by people who think that blatant discrimination is simply a ‘different opinion,’ so you can imagine how hard it is to trust anyone online :/ i’ve gotten bombarded with replies to my youtube comments before (unrelated to gender, mind you) saying that i’ll ‘never be a woman’ and that i’ll ‘always be a man no matter what i do’ because they think i’m a trans woman 💀
@frishter Жыл бұрын
@@666_cthulhu I think something to take note of is that people who are pushed away are less likely to be compassionate towards those that do the pushing. With the way things are going I'm less interested in forming a middle ground with those who probably aren't willing to even attempt to move there with me. When it came to reddit in particular, they especially didn't like me siding with JK Rowling because I've seen the abuse she and other gender critical people receive.
