My doctors have been giving me Vitamin D2 for YEARS. I have high calcium and high PTH and I have no idea how long. I decided to switch from their D2 50,000 IU a week to a D3/K2 supplement. My D levels got to 102, which I hear is not bad since we know how much it helps us fight off Covid. My endocrinologist tried to tell me I have secondary hyperparathyroidism. I think he has out of date information, because he also thinks high urine calcium must be present, which we know now that it doesn't have to be. He also thinks sestamibi scans are accurate and we know that they will often only locate one gland, or even none of the glands, when in fact, there are tumors. The GOLD standard remains high PTH and high calcium levels. I think I've suffered from this issue for years! My calcium levels are all over the place, from high nines to high 10's. It should be malpractice to be treated as I have in 2023. I'm so sick. I have nausea, vomiting, something like IBS. I have bone pain, brain fog, I can't sleep and I'm turning into an irritable unhappy woman. I also developed diastolic heart failure within the last two years and have to take diuretics, which are failing in efficiency. My GFR has been steadily decreasing. I need HELP! This endocrinologist I'm seeing is not helping me at all and tried to drag out tests for four more months!

You have to look for a knowledgeable physician and endocrinologist. Finding a needle in a haystack is 1000 times easier than finding an MD with strong knowledge, ability to diagnose correctly and treat the patient with the correct medications. THey are glorified pill prescriptionist and most of these pills only increase our vulnerability to more diseases!

@@nancylindsay4255 So true and yes I'm doing well, Thanks. Surgery was a success and I'm feeling so much better! My vocal cords were stretched during removal of the large tumor, so my voice is taking longer to normalize, but it's improving over time. BTW, I found out through my research (and several doctors confirmed my findings), that my tumor was more than likely caused by radiation treatment that I was given 30 years ago! This was after I had surgery to remove a keloid scar on my neck (caused by a prior surgery)! Right side (same side the tumor was found on). Radiation is a known factor in Parathyroid adenomas (not particularly Thyroid, but Parathyroid). I found several medical articles that explains it and the key takeaway is... there's a 30 year latency period, between radiation exposure to the head or neck and the.."DISCOVERY" of Parathyroid tumors! Crazy! Several plastic surgeons said that radiation should never be used in the treatment of cosmetic scars! Wish I'd known that 30 years ago. Fortunately there's no indication of cancer, so I'll count my blessings 🙏🏾

Hi there, I'm a 48 year old male. Recent test results were: PTH Intact 54pg, Calcium 10.4mg. The week prior to that my calcium was 10.6mg and Vitamin D 42ng. 1 year ago my Vitamin D was 47ng. I have been taking a 3000 UI of Vitamin D3 for the past 2 years, and bumped up to 4000 UI plus Vitamin K2 100 mcg about 2 months ago. My Vitamin D was under 26ng prior to that as far back as 2019 (21ng). The lowest Vitamin D was 13ng in 2021, along with my Calcium at 10.5 on that same blood draw. Have an appointment to see an endocrinologist in July. Should I insist on an ultrasound/xray for parathyroid tumors? Oh, and I have had some symptoms, hypertension stage 1, chest pains with an ER visit; heart looked good in an xray, fatigue for as long as I can remember, acid reflux while sleeping. If you think you have a parathyroid tumor don't give blood it confuses doctors, and you can't explain it to them. You have approximately 10 pints of blood and if you take one out it drops vitamins in the blood by about 10%. It will reduce the calcium in the blood along with Vitamin D. With a lower amount of vitamin D your calcium will have a slow start to climbing back up, but it will. You can't explain the process to doctors either. also, if you give blood your kidneys won't have much calcium to filter out into the urine and that confuses them as well. *Keith will tell you that without vitamin D you can't absorb calcium. High calcium hinders Iron absorption. Just some food for thought.

It is very unusual to have a vit D of 60 without supplements, even though that is in the normal range. It may be that your high Vit D and PTH are needed to maintain normal calcium. This is seen in folks with kidney issues and very frequently in patients who have either GI issues or have had gastric bypass surgery. Finally, there are people with a parathyroid adenoma but normal calciums - I’ve seen this countless times. I would highly suggest you see a high volume parathyroid surgeon. Wow. Invaluable information. Learned more in this video than from a year seeing an Endocrinologist (which is only two visits, due to the wait between appointments). Just had another CMP. Calcium was lower than it has been in two years, for some reason, at 10.2. PTH was 64 (was 88 in 11/2022). Per LabCorp, it's a "normal" result and so was not flagged. Problem is, I have been on taking Vitamin D, Calcium, Magnesium, and MK-7 supplements, as I have had Secondary Osteoporosis since 32 years old. Now I am in the severe category of Osteoporosis, having fractured my sacrum in 2020, while sitting on a hardwood floor for an extended period of time. The assumption that has always been made (and which I had ignorantly accepted) was that the Secondary Osteoporosis is the result of having had Anorexia and Bulimia (which does seem like a logical assumption). Looking back at past bloodwork, though, it appears I've had a hyperparathyroid condition since 2006. When I questioned the results, reiterating the vitamins, minerals, and doses I am supplementing with, and which are already on my medication list, my doctor advised that stopping supplements prior to lab work is "not advisable", as it would not be accurately portraying the levels typically present in my blood and urine. Furthermore, she advised that the test results (Ca 10.2, PTH 64, at 53 years old) is "within the normal range", and so is refusing a retest. She explained that because the results are "within acceptable guidelines", my insurance may very well deny it (their office does NOT want to get involved with any insurance issues), and furthermore, since it's now "acceptable", it is unnecessary. I cannot even express how upset I am about all of this. I'm at the end of my rope, and am going to look elsewhere for a specialist. The state of our healthcare system in America is frightening. The more a person uses it, the easier it is to see just how broken it is. Thank you for refueling my determination to advocate for myself.

@entallergydoc1 2 жыл бұрын
Vit D deficiency results in low serum calcium or normal serum calcium. Typically, PTH will rise to get the calcium into the normal range. PTH causes calcium release from the bones and increased resorption from the kidneys - so urine calcium would not be high if the kidneys are working normally!

My PTH is elevated at 76 pg/mL (15-65) My Calcium is 9.2 mg/dL (8.7-10.2) My Ionized Calcium is 4.8 mg/dL (4.5-5.6) My Vitamin D, 25-Hydroxy is 8.2 ng/mL (30-100) Does my case seem like it would be caused by a parathyroid adenoma? Or does it seem more like secondary hyperparathyroidism? This is the first time my PTH has come back out of range high, it had been lingering near the very top of normal until my most recent blood draw. I'd really appreciate your opinion.

@entallergydoc1

No. Primary HPTH would have high calcium, not normal or low normal calcium. The high PTH is maintaining normal calcium to make up for the loss of calcium into the urine. In this case, Vit D supplements are the first step.

It was only after that request that an utra sound was recommended. Did your doctor prescribe that amount of vitamin D for you? You should talk to your doctor about your intake of vitamin D and how you are feeling. And yes, high PTH, high calcium, and normal vitamin D is likely hyperparathyroidism. You should see an endocrinologist who is VERY familiar with parathyroid issues. (Many are not.)

@Keith Forwith PhD, MD Well, please explain this to me, doc. My Vitamin D level is 20 and My PTH is 9pg/ml. My blood Calcium is 11mg/dl. I am listed as having hypoparathyroidism which I have read is really rare. My lower back, pelvis, and hips have been killing me for months. They ran more labs I'm waiting to hear back from. These will be phosphorus levels and urine calcium, as well as Vitamin D level again and blood calcium again. It's weird because I am a 32 year old 6'3 200 pound fairly healthy guy. Was always an athlete. I do work in Healthcare as a CT tech and I have worked nightshift for the past 5 years. I'm sure that's why my Vitamin d is so low. I'm just confused because stuff I'm looking up says poss malignancy for these weird lab values, but all my blood labs for wbc and lymphocytes are normal. I also had an Abdomen and pelvis scan 3 weeks ago to see if I had kidney stones because I had kidney pain. The Radiologist read everything being normal. No cancerous lesion no bone masses or osteoporosis. My neck has no swelling or trouble swallowing. It's very odd. Forgot to mention all my Thyroid labs were normal.

With a PTH level of 236 is extremely high, what is your calcium level? Usually the calcium level will also be elevated. Which points to hyperparathyroidism. I have done many research and found that cruciferous vegetables helps lower the parathyroid gland. Until you can be seen by an endocrinologist and a surgeon to have one or more of them removed.
