My husband had surgery 48 hours ago with a skilled parathyroid surgeon. My husband had severe mental health issues including crying, anxiety, terror; he always said "I don't feel right in my core", had SO MANY kidney stones, severe reflux, gait problems [read a study of a woman who had gait problems, too], terrible fatigue on top of his chronic fatigue already diagnosed, etc etc, he was on the decline. Luckily our primary care M.D. was a good one. Noticed the Vitamin D and calcium numbers and referred us to an endocrinologist. Quickly post surgery, he could tell the difference. It's wonderful to see the increased energy and not hear moaning all night, or panic, he can process information, he is happy. btw, he needed no pain meds or anything else. He could even swallow everything (they tell you to do a liquid diet but he didn't). In fact, the outcome was so amazing that the next morning we went out to eat as normal people with normal lives. Each day his mental health gets better, don't know about the reflux. His long 3 hr naps are less and he feels refreshed finally.

Thank you. I've been hospitalized twice since 2019, misdiagnosed. I knew something was wrong but couldn't explain it. I finally insisted on bloodtest and was diagnosed this week. I have been diagnosed with hyperparathyroidism. I’m due for a consultation in a couple of weeks. My calcium however has never been above 10.0. Since I’ve read more about it I’m thinking that I finally have the answer to my daddy’s problems. At 67 he had an aortic valve replacement. The surgery took shockingly longer than expected by the surgeon because of the amount of calcium deposits in and around the valve. After that he continued to decline. Within a month he lost 25 pounds and was having delusional thoughts and hallucinations. He forgot how to do things. He was peeing constantly and his bladder was bloody and raw according to his urologist. The urologist even said it wasn’t contracting therefore causing urine to constantly be in his bladder. After another month he was placed in a mental hospital and given medication because of the severity of his delusions. He went into a catatonic state and the scans showed some atrophy but not enough to cause his catatonic state. He came home after a couple of weeks but we lost our daddy mentally in the course of two months and he never returned. It was like no one knew what was wrong with him. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and then had a shunt placed for NPH. I spent many years trying to figure out what had happened to him. I truly think he had this as well and it saddens me to know he could’ve gotten better. He suffered many years and the last few years were so bad. He eventually passed away from kidney failure. He had had kidney stones throughout his lifetime as well. Please share any feedback on this. I would appreciate if.

Thank you for sharing. Your video is very helpful. My endocrinologist tested me a few months ago and I was diagnosed with hyperparathyroidism. I had a nuclear scan and CT scan completed. I will have surgery in one week. I have all of the symptoms in your graph. I'm staying hopeful that after my surgery my life will be back to normal.

I had some blood tests with my GP and advised my calcium was low and prescribed calcium for 14 days. In the mean time noticed a lump in my neck, went for an ultrasound and now referred to head and neck team as it’s my parathyroid gland with some swollen lymph nodes. My domestic partner had two of the parathyroid glands removed October 29th 2024. She has suffered from symptoms of chronic fatigue, brain fog, confusion, forgetfullness, anger, anxiety for year and years and despite me having her view many post op videos she thought she was going to be healed of all symptoms the next day. She was actually hysterical and wanted to be taken to an emergency clinic because she still had all the symptoms. I managed to get her to calm down and convinced her that she has to take it day by day -- years and years of symptoms don't neccessarily disappear overnight. Now a week later she is noticing improvement and is hopefull instead of depressed and fatalistic.

Hi. I have a 3cm parathyroid adenoma and despite taking medication, my blood calcium is 3.05 (European numbers) I am having surgery next week, but they think it’s cancer because the tumor is palpable and visible, plus high PTH and blood calcium started at 3.74 (EU) and was admitted to emergency due to a kidney stone. Got a stent, stayed 1 week in hospital to bring calcium down. Kidney stent taken out 1 month later. But stone broke, but didn't pass yet. Had laser blast, but didn't help much. I am tired, so tired, have muscle bone pain for more than 2-3 years and yes, got that I am old now, all of a sudden. I am 62, not diabetic, otherwise healthy, but my legs, feet, ankles are in pain. Sometimes, it hurts to walk. I do my 10,000 or more daily steps cuz I don't want to atrophy… Can’t wait to get this out!

Hi. It took 3 weeks for pathology to figure it out. It was my parathyroid which was INSIDE my thyroid (from birth apparently) and no adenoma, no cyst or tumor, but the actual parathyroid which just grew out of proportion and causing the hyperparathyroidism probably for a few years. Go figure.

@@carollemieux7474 hi. I got the operation and it took 3 weeks for the biopsy. It was not cancer but the actual parathyroid that had grown inside my thyroid. Very unique and rare occurrence, thus the time for the biopsy. I had a little over a third of the thyroid removed with it, but all my numbers went to normal after the operation. I will have to take calcium and other minerals and vitamins to try to make up for the years of draining calcium from my bones, hopefully reversing my osteoporosis and osteopenia. I feel so much better, no more pain in my bones and muscles. Thanks for your words of support.

Very helpful thank you. I am 39, and I’ve always had fibromyalgia, but the fatigue and pain has been much more severe the last 6-8 months. My parathyroid just tested as 72 ng/L. However, my calcium and vitamin d levels are normal. We are doing more tests and possibly a referral to an endocrinologist. If the parathyroid is truly the issue and could be cured with surgery I will be THRILLED. This fatigue is all-consuming. I have pretty much every other symptom on the list as well. Except for the calcium/d levels.

I think you may have just cured me! I have frequent urination and constipation but I couldnt understand why me lacking calcium would lead to more urine output. It seemed counter productive but lacking the muscle ability to empty the bladder makes total sense! Also explains why ive been constipated and feeling weak in the gym! Think i still have to optimize magnesium and vitamin D since its all correlated but at least I know the issue! Thank you!!!!

Yes this happened to me. 1.5 yrs ago overnite. Super inflammation all over that just seemed to spread from joint to joint, area to area. Kind of unreal. Some of the things I have found help me most with inflammation (I'm very sensitive to most all pharmaceuticals so will leave those as a last resort) are bovine bone and marrow, calcium citrate and glycine. All give me magnificent relief in addition to improving my sleep and health. I've recently added diatomaceous earth which is silica (supposed to be a mineral which helps us) and it also gets rid of parasites and heavy metals. I have only felt better from the silica as well. Also taking a lot of D3 and magnesium. I recently started bovine brain, hoping that helps with my memory and neurological protection. I haven't been noticeably irritable so much, more like super lethargic and depressed. No zest for life. My energy is improving gradually with the above supplements. 😊

My last calcium was 10.4, PTH 103, DEXA shows osteoporosis and I am currently passing a 2mm left side kidney stone. This is my 2nd time goung through this nightmare of a disease. I had a 4cm parathyroid adenoma and a right hemithyriodectomy removed in 2011. I also ended up with left lyrengeal nerve damage and admitted in ICU. A second ooeratuon has me feeling very uneasy. However, going through all the signs and symptoms and other issues isn't very heartwarming either. Thus is my 1st kidney stone. Oh my goodness...I just wanted to die😂. I will be 63 next month.

I would love to hear from you. I too suffer from hyperparathyroid (at least that's what I think it is) symptoms but have not had it checked out yet; just basing it on (in my case) very high Ca++ and very high vit D levels, and don't take either of these exogenously. What to do, when the doctors will not help or refer to the specialist? My son now is at 102 of PTH his calcium has dropped to the top range of normal after being high last month. We are both taking VitD and K2 zinc and selenium by ourselves as the doctor does the blood tests but asks no questions and says all is well. We both have all of the mentioned symptoms. @bartrebe the medication is called Cinacalcet, but then your son would need to take it for the rest of his life. Ideal treatment is surgery. So if possible see a parathyroid surgeon. Yes, I have those symptoms. My PTH was 105.9 and renal EGFR 47, creatinine elevated. My provider says my calcium level is normal and not to worry about it. Have not had any other studies.

A high PTH requires a work up, you may have normocalcemic hyperparathyroidism or secondary hyperparathyroidism

I somehow became lactose intolerant a couple years ago, so recently I looked at my diet and realized there is no way I'm getting enough calcium in my diet causing my parathyroid to over compensate. The suddenly feeling old title and all of the symptoms are spot on, even in the order he listed them in. Hopefully calcium supplement will help and going to doctor for deficiency blood panel.

Doc! I don't know how to feel right now. I'm going to start with the year I didn't know I had kidney stones EXCRUCIATING! I'm going to number each event! 1. Kidney Stones (17 YEARS AGO THIS STARTED) 2. Hair loss 3. constant malaise 4. constant fatigue 5. severe abdominal pain 6. Aggression, more aggression and more (lead to divorce) 7. Delusions- I've been told 8. Hallucination- I've been told 9. angry at the drop of a dime for no reason at times, when it comes on-RUN 10. 3 Cervical spine surgeries in ten years from bad car accident---because now I realize the bone wouldn't fuse because of rare tumors (WHET!) 11. Most of the front of my hair (screams) 12. partial hysterectomy because who knew it was kidney stones 13. depression, crying, RAGE, anxiety, PTSD 14. consistent low vitamin D levels over the years had to take 50,000 IU's 15.Heart rate over 175 with barely any movement 16. Irritability on 1000 (hard to be around me at times I ADMIT) 17. Ulcer on pancreas from this rare tumor-2 Endoscopies 18. Heartburn soooo bad (UGH) 19. Uterine ablation because of pain ( was kidney stones GRRRRRRRRRR) 20. frequent urination 21. sinus issues---bitter taste in mouth from post nasal (I swear I could taste something from this tumor or something!!!) 22. Insomnia 23. MUSCLE CRAMPS IN THE LEG UGHHHHHHHHHH 24. Twitching, eyes and various other places 25. MEMORY LOSS, CAN'T FINISH SENTENCES, FORGET MY THOUGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF A CONVERSATION-EMBARASSING 26. Thirst and this is crazy because well, I was just thirsty!!!! and the list goes on. When you have co-occurring issues like arthritis, car accident, it's soooooooooo hard to detect!!! My tumors were inside the thyroid and made it impossible to detect-thank GOD for the one that surfaced on the outside of the Thyroid. TEN INCONCLUSIVE BIOPSIES AND I WAS OVERRRRR IT! Just elected to remove left lobe last Tuesday. I was experiencing bone pain so bad, I just said to my partner well wtf, how does one feel when they get old!!!!! He said I had to exercise, like I wanted to throw something!! WTF can exercise with this level of pain. Man if only people knew how bad this condition is. But yes, we caught it and I was tripping when I could walk up the bus steps with ease, Everything was a uhhhh, like my next stage of pain was in my hip!!! just got a cortisone shot-hey I'm thinking this is life SMH. Its improved so much, hell many of my pains have improved from a week ago. I just absolutely cannot believe I suffered- No---been tortured by this for almost 2 decades. I experienced a personality disorder, like you just cannot make this up! I wish everyone the best of luck!!!! stay persistent if you believe something is wrong. My issue was rare, little known about the tumors. Thank God they are benign. If you do not get this disease in order, you will die like Gary Shandling the comedian, he didn't take it serious because he never heard of the parathyroid gland. No Dr. could explain any of this, my Dr. will probably be embarrassed because every symptom is in my chart. The date I found out results from my pathology report is an added birthday. Is it common for symptoms to come and go? I think mine might be due to vitamin D deficiency, but need to talk to the doctor, i just had x rays and my bones are indicating this, but my blood calcium was normal. No constipation, in fact just the opposite, a little too easy to go. But yes, i feel like my mom who is in her 80's and I am 49. I am having bone pain, muscle pain, fatigue, insomnia, hypersomnia, headaces, brain fog, constant tingling in the legs, my face and tounge went numb yesterday for an hour. In fact i went to the ER thinking i was having chest pain, and my heart is fine. Even had an ultrasound done to rule out blood clots. But, i had crying fits the whole day, the nurse was concerned that "something else" was going on because i cried at everything. I was actually thinking i was bipolar because of the massive mood swings and inability to sleep. My last doctor, now retired, kept sending me to physical therapy and recommending antidepressants and Tylenol.

If my PTH intact result is 82, but my latest DEXA actually showed improvement, what is going on? When I was initially diagnosed, all my levels were normal except for PTH. My symptoms could be persistent weight loss, muscle fatigue and the fact that despite my being a dedicated vegan for 17 years and a lifter for 35 years, I have deflated into a sharpei puppy. I lost 35 pounds since menopause and can’t get it back. My face is aging much faster than it should. Despite drinking 2 liters of water daily (not including the litany of fresh produce snarfed down every day), I look dehydrated. Is this part of the fun of the disease?!

I have all of those symptoms right now. 4 years ago, I did a surgery removing 2 of the parathyroid glands. I was put on a high dose of calcium but unfortunately there was very little monitoring or evaluation. After a while my calcium went up to 13.5, so my nephrologist stopped the calcium all together. So now, I'm having sleep obstruction, headache, lack of sleep, irritability, memory loss, confusion, severe neck tension etc. I literally just packed my bag to go to the hospital but definitely not hoping for the best. Most of the help I've gotten is from watching doctors on KZbin. Doctors in the Caribbean act as if our health is a secret from us. My BP spiked, just add more tablets. So what should I do now to get relief from my symptoms?

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. Without looking at your calcium/PTH & vitamin D levels done at the same time, it is hard to judge it. If you have a nephrologist and some degree of kidney compromise then the situation is more complex. So it could be 1. Taking too much supplements which with it fluids can be diluted and resolved easily. 2. Recurrent hyperparathyroidism or 3. Kidney malfunction

@@LarianMD Thank you so much for your response. My apologies for not mentioning I'm a dialysis for the last 10 years. I've been begging to get these blood works done, but have had a positive response so far. Last night, I increased my Alfacalcidol from 4 to six. It's the best I've slept in weeks. I'm supposed to see the nephrologist sometime this and I'm also trying to get an appointment at THE hospital's ENT. I will keep you posted. I really appreciate the response.

Dear Doctor Larian, I saw my nephrologist today. He decreased the alfacalcidol from 6 to 1 daily. I told him I was taking 6 and it helped me to get some rest. My calcium is at 11.4, down from 13.5. He said with the calcium still high, I have to reduce the alfacalcidol. Here I am typing to you because I didn't get much sleep last night. He ordered some blood tests so I await the results for them. In the meantime, my head hurts, my BP is very high (he increased the dosage of the hydralizine from 25mg once daily to 50my twice daily, and I also take irbesartan 300mg once daily and 2 nifedipine twice daily. What are your thoughts? I don't have a recent reading for the phosphorus and they've never tested my vitamin D level in my 10 years on diálysis. I asked my nephrologist about it and he said he doesn't believe it's offered at the hospitals.

Watched twice. It took nearly 5 years to be diagnosed with Hyperparathyroidism. Bone pain was often dismissed although I did get my arm xrayed to rule out break or fracture. Fatigue I thought was because I was working hard whilst coping with bone pain. Confusion I put down to general weariness, not sleeping well. One year before my diagnosis I had a blood test that showed high blood calcium, I was given a letter by my doctor to have one week off work and to rest. There were obvious signs and complaints and still the diagnosis took so long

So I don’t have to have my thyroid and parathyroid removed? My endocrinologist and primary care provider are very vague when explaining things and both said I need surgery instead of giving me the option of hormone therapy and iodine tabs. I just turned 30 on April 18th and I’m worried that if I don’t have my thyroid and parathyroid when I’m older I’ll have issues. I don’t want to be stuck on meds for the rest of my life after having the surgery, there’s gotta be another way.

Also if this is of any help I met with the endocrinologist for the first time today and was told I have a nodule on the left that 3.8 cm in length and 3.9 on the right and surgery is required if they’re at 4cm or over, since I have multiple and 2 are almost at 4cm they want to do complete removal of thyroid and parathyroid.

Thyroid is good? Did you run tests for T4/T3 and other thyroid hormones? If they are ok you don't need a remove of thyroid and for parathyroidectomy we have (the majority of population) 4 gland's you don't need to remove all if you do that you get hypoparathyroidism that is very dangerous.

I sent you an email. I am being bounced around from Specialist to specialist with no answers I have every symptom hair loss nausea, heartburn, headaches, but my calcium keeps fluctuating. I am ready to give up! I can get out of bed due to the fatigue and heart palpitations. Over the last month Calcium 10.4 PTH 40, 2 weeks later 9.9 calcium PTH 50 vitamin D 17. 4 days ago Calcium 10.1 PTH 70 Vitamin D 40 (due to injection doctor said that was my issue.) Chloride is 112. I go back to the cardiologist on Monday to review my heart monitor results and a referral for a skeleton doctor for more tests. Thank you for the amazing videos.

Thank you for this video! I was just diagnosed with hyperparathyroidism and had a CT scan, ultrasound, and a Nuclear Medicine scan however none of them show anything wrong with the parathyroids! I was suggested exploratory surgery which worries me. Do you suggest any other tests?

You’re talking about me, Doctor! I am dealing with an 8mm kidney stone that has moved from my left kidney and is stuck in my ureter. I’m on 600mg of gabapentin at bedtime because I have such terrible burning in my thighs, torso, lower back. No one can figure out why! 😢 Joint pain, muscle aches, legs don’t work right and feel like lead. Extreme fatigue. Intact PTH has been as high as 134. Vitamin D has been as low as 11. Calcium is “normal”, so I’m considered secondary hyperparathyroidism. Calcium is in the 9’s. Has never gone over 10. A suspicious parathyroid growth or tumor has been detected on 2 scans but is being ignored by doctors. One scan was the sestamibi scan, one a thyroid ultrasound. I also have a tirads 5 thyroid nodule that I was told was cancerous when I had the FNA done (2 needles got clogged due to calcification, but the surgeon submitted clear fluid to pathology. Benign!). I want a second opinion. Now they found my endometrial lining is very thick and may be malignant. I have to go to the OR for the biopsy. It’s never ending! 😢 Could all of these hormonal diseases be related?? Help!! 😢 I just turned 64.

I’m sorry to hear what you’re going through. It sounds like you have normocalcemic hyperparathyroidism. I would need to do more labs to confirm. If you have kidney stones then you should have parathyroid surgery. And during parathyroid surgery the thyroid nodules can be biopsied (and sent to the pathologist during surgery to get an immediate answer) and if cancerous it can be addressed at the same time. Btw please have the urologist remove the kidney stones immediately

However, I do have an appointment with an endourologist on December 18th. I’m praying she wants to remove this large kidney stone immediately! I’ve also been told by a friend (she’s a dentist and your patient) that she thinks I have normocalcemic hyperparathyroidism. I don’t recognize myself in pictures. My memory is shot. I can’t sleep. Hey doc. My mom told me she has this high Pth levels and somewhat normal calcium level which were high last time around abut seemed to be in the normal range now. However her pth is still high as per her doctor. She also mentioned doctor pitting some nodules on her thyroid but they also had to look at her parathyroid glands since pth is high. She does seem tired and and says little when I talk to her. She does seem to suffer from some of the symptoms you listed. How serious is this illness? Is it life treating? I am worried about her

Thank you. I have hyperparathyroidism with normal calcium levels, and no adenoma visible after two ultrasounds and twoj nuclear scans over past four years. I have many of the symptoms listed, for four or more years now. All my other Bloodwork was fairly normal except for slightly low thyroid. I feel exhausted and somewhat weak, occasionally dizzy. I also have degenerative disk disease and some neuromuscular damage from spinal nerve root compression. I am frustrated with no apparent solution yet.

Are you sure you have hyperparathyroidism or hyperthyroidism? The treatment of hyperparathyroidism is surgery ONLY, some times the adenoma in one or more hyperparathyroid glands are not seen on ct scan or US. Check online on Norman Parathyroid Center in Tampa, Florida, US; they are the specialists.They have videos in KZbin also.

Hi. Having had hyper parathyroid and an operation to remove it, the kidney stones were the trigger for the doc at the hospital to detect it. All the calcium in the blood is like sand, thus going through the kidneys and accumulating and creating the stones. Simple as that. Kidney stones can of course be due to bad diet… and diabetes etc. I have osteoporosis and osteopenia due to the super PTH levels and parathyroid issues that were probably present at least 3-4 years prior to detection. I had 3 and 1/2 of my parathyroid’s removed. Felt much better. Now2 yrs later in having the same symptoms. My PTH is very high again ( it was normal after the surgery) there going to do a sonogram to check but the dr I’m seeing now said he wouldn’t recommend removing the last part of that gland even if there is another adenoma. He thinks it would be worse to do that. Yett a friend had it done and she’s so much happier. I’m tired of just being treated with Vit D . There seems to be an old school thinking and a new school . I’m curious what your thoughts are. Especially since I’m having so many what ideas call side affects from it. All the things you mentioned in this video

Hi Michelle, since you had 3.5 glands removed you must have parathyroid hyperplasia, which means all 4 glands were abnormal to begin with. It’s possible that the last half a gland left has grown now and is overproducing PTH and causing problems or you may be one of 20% of people who have 5 parathyroid glands. Ultrasound and 4D parathyroid CT scans can help figure that out. Your 2 options are surgery with an expert parathyroid surgeon or taking the medication Cinacalcet. Best wishes Babak

Unfortunately in the setting kidney failure and hemodialysis it is impossible to avoid tertiary HPT. If you live with the kidney failure long enough and not get a kidney transplant in time it will happen.

PTH is produced by parathyroid glands, while PTHrp is naturally produced by the body during pregnancy. PTHrp is also produced by some tumors that can mimic hyperparathyroidism

Thank you for your reply so grateful. By nhs range it should be less than 1.7 my endo has put this as my pth result so that’s not good and defo not pregnant I am 57 . Having very hard time and my tpo is >1300 and tg very very high to . but my pth fluctuates normal range and calcium fluctuates always boarder range or high . Thank you really for your help it’s hard to get help and am very unwell but seems can’t get them to listen and the fact they have misdiagnosed pthrp for pth results is not good . 🤗

May vitamin D supplementation without calcium supplementation cause more harm than good by absorption of calcium from bone? Though it is learnt that indiscriminate use of OTC medication containing both calcium and Vitamin D is the third most common cause of hypercalcemia.

I have the very same question. Prior to having a C4-C7 my primary care doctor ordered a large panel of blood work, and my calcium was extremely high. I had just had a bone density test that showed I already have osteopenia. There was enough concern that the surgery was almost cancelled. Not only did they fuse C4-C7, but they had to correct reverse curvature of the cervical spine. The neurosurgeon said that he could have done more, but wanted to leave me with some mobility. I now have a herniated disc at C3-C2. I haven’t had any blood work done in a while. What should I have them look for when I have access to insurance? I also have Occipital Neuralgia, and Dystonia of the scapular area. A herniated thoracic disc, and facet joint problems in my lower back. Could any of this be related to hypothyroidism, or an underlying case of hypoparathyroidism? I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism at 30, 24 years ago. Life is pretty miserable. I was diagnosed with carpal tunnel at 16 in 1986, that was unheard of at the time. I truly feel as if something has been missed for most of my life, any thoughts??

If you repeat your labs calcium/pth/vitamin D several times fasting and at 8AM, and your calcium is always is normal and PTH is elevated, you may have normocalcemic hyperparathyroidism; but also must rule out other causes of high PTH. You’ll need a physician that understands these issues to comprehensively investigate.
