Vitreous eye floaters are not just an age-related phenomenon, many young people appear to be developing eye floaters. So why are young people getting vitreous eye floaters and is this a new phenomenon or just the way it's always been? I've got some thoughts on this to share.

My eye floaters playlist: • Floaters In The Eye
About this video:
Hi, I'm optometrist Martin Oguzie and this is Martin's Eye Tips. In this video, I will be sharing my theory on why so many young people are getting eye floaters, even though it is supposed to be an older person's eye condition. Many people in their 20's have contacted me with their concerns. Many Facebook eye floater groups that discuss eye floaters treatment possibilities, including bromelain pineapple supplements, are filled with young people. As an optometrist, this reality is counter to the training and theory that we learn. The discussion covers hyaluronic acid and the role of vitreous cells such as hyalocytes of Balazs. I highlight some possible considerations for vision science researchers to pursue in that could lead to eye floaters no more, for many people in time (hopefully).

It really is the strangest thing. I'm 23 and I have around 20 floaters in each eye, it's incredibly distracting. I have had an office job for 2 years since graduating so maybe the blue light from computers? Working from home on my laptop since March. (I had my first floater in May). I find a new floater every week + experience flashes every day. The ophthalmologist just said try to ignore all the symptoms, but it's impossible. I just hope there's a solution in my lifetime. Because I feel like it's made a huge impact on my life and for the future

Thanks for sharing this Liam. That is a lot of floaters. Like you say it’s easier said than done to ignore that many floaters. I think it would make a very interesting and important research for a PHD candidate to look into. It is a different research area from work that may be done to try and treat existing floaters. We need to stop young people getting floaters in the first place. Stay positive as much as possible 🙏🏽

I'm currently in my mid 20s and have had floaters for as long as I can remember. I'm extremely near sighted with severe astigmatism, with my left eye being the worse of the two. I'd roughly estimate about 15-20 in my left eye and about 10 in my right eye of varying sizes. Its very annoying. Its made worse by doctors usually being dismissive of my condition. Its easy to say learn to ignore it when you don't have to live with it. 😑

I am only 13 (well turning 14 this year) and I have eye floaters. I am also suffering with health anxiety, and this past weeks I am more focused on my eyes. They say it might be retinal detachment and I am scared to go blind, googling is a bad thing to do especially for me whos experiencing anxiety. Idk what to do actually, i tried to ignore them but sometimes I see myself going back to the cycle. It is really tough & scary
@meyetips
@meyetips 3 жыл бұрын
Firstly, if you’ve had your eyes checked thoroughly and they didn’t feel that it needed referral or treatment then that is a good sign that it is not likely to be a detaching retina. They may have advised you to look out for signs of a retinal detachment (such as lots of new floaters suddenly at once or shadows in your vision), however, that is standard advice and doesn’t necessarily mean that you will ever have a problem. Secondly, it’s always more worrying to get floaters when you are young, but I do few that young eyes are tough and despite having floaters early in life you are not at any greater risk of losing your sight. Stay positive!

Everywhere I research on the internet, doctors always say it's age related but I am highly skeptical of that because there seems to be a very large consensus everywhere that nearly everybody of all age groups have floaters. I'm 35 and I've had floaters since I was a little kid. It's normally nothing debilitating. Maybe a few strands or "worms" here and there but most of the time, my brain ignores them and I forget that they're even there.

Later I accepted it and started living my life normally as it never caused other issues. It was very difficult to educate the doctors about this condition earlier. You're right on .....larger blue light computer screens are the worst, but young ppl staring half the day at any type of screen cannot be good for eyehealth.
@siberianbluehusky8734
@siberianbluehusky8734 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's connected to blue light. In my case it's been connected with lack of sleep / overexert of the eyes. If you stare at the phone/laptop for prolonged period of time, you hold your eyes fixed for a lot of time and your vitreous moves less and less and it basically becomes submissive to atrophy, which floaters are the symptom of. The key is to get rid of all electronic devices, go to nature and consistently move your eyes and look around, do eye exercises each day + drink a lot of pineapple. The results will not come overnight because neither floaters appeared just out of nowhere. The process might take years depending on individual's state of the eye and genetics, but If you're not ready to do all of those things above, then be ready to make peace with your floaters. Just a note, there are cases where people report having floaters since they were basically little kids. In that case I believe their cause is purely genetics and exercises will not achieve much

I feel people maybe getting floaters due to the lockdown. Think about it, we've been forced to stay in our houses. The impact of this has forced us to work from home; using laptops. People have been using a lot more socia media apps e.g. FB, KZbin, Instagram, zoom etc. The dreaded blue light on our devices are having a major impact on our eyes. I've also realised, many of us are probably bored at home with no distractions like friends to socialise with. This may trigger our brains to focus on the floaters more than usual. I find that when I'm doing things and socialising. I don't notice them as much.

I'm 20 & and i have my first floaters a years ago. After i passed from my high school in oct 2019, I took admission in college, where you don't have to go to college , you only need to give semester exams. Since I had lots of time, I started learning web developing and graphic designing. After some time lockdown happened, I started using laptops and smartphones very frequently even in Bathroom and Shower. I addicted to smartphone, also the free time goes to learning stuff that is again staring at screen.Due to lockdown my fomo becomes worse, my depression and anxiety was also high.So what I want to tell you from my experience is blue light is massive culprit to Eye Floaters , I had anxiety and depression before since I lost my dad due to disease, so I don't think stress is major issue but the amalgation of both can be serious. So my advice is stay away from blue light as much as you can, if you are reading this you are most probably an introvert who spends a lot of time with screen and has sedentary lifestyle. Change you lifestyle see beauty of nature instead of blank lifeless screen.This is happening to young people recently because before we never had people who stares at screen atleast 8 hours a day.Try to protect yourself from screen as much as possible and improve your lifestyle. As of now i rarely see any floaters , I wake up at five and go to ground for running , I changed my career ,now i don't have to stare the screen 8-9 hours a day. I didn't except it to become so long , Thanks for reading. Namaste 🙏

I already hat many floaters in both eyes at the age of twelve and when I was twelve, there were no computer screens around. Now, many many years later I am just experiencing a really big floater in my left eye due to the detachment of the the vitreous body. Now I am hoping that time (gravity), getting used to it and maybe bromelain will reduce its size and/or opacity.

Thank you for this, Martin, very well researched! I was wondering whether sleep is playing a role here in modulating hyalocyte function. Blue light from phones may not be a direct cause. However, blue light may be causing sleep problems in individuals. Sleep problems are being reported more over the past several years, particularly during the pandemic. Also, it is well known how much sleep problems compromise immune system function. I speculate that there maybe a relationship here worth exploring between hyalocyte turnover and issues to do with sleep (perhaps also mental health issues such as anxiety, depression and stress).
@meyetips
@meyetips 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Daryl, it’s appreciated. Yeah, good call on sleep and blue light, I didn’t think too much about that possible connection. I imagine that the cumulative impact of ongoing poor sleep will impact a lot of things, including the build up of free-radicals that could play an important part in damaging cells such as hyalocytes. Definitely worth a deeper dive into the theory.

I have just developed one floater in my right eye, I have astigmatism. I'm only 33 and a bus driver. I literally woke up Wednesday morning with a slight blur. I assumed for many hours that my glasses needed a clean. Then as the day got darker I could see the blob. Went to hospital to have it diagnosed. Since then it has been getting worse. I'm awaiting opthalmology to check it shortly. My worry is, my driving license/pcv license. As my vision is affected. I am actually struggling to see and getting headaches. I've resulted in wearing an eye patch. I'm terrified that this means I have no job 😫

doctor, I am 20 years old this year and I recently developed 3 big floaters in my left eye in addition to about 4 smaller ones. I have never had floaters before and I am thinking that they were a direct result of my Latisse usage. I used Latisse on and off for about a month after a really bad break up with my boyfriend of 3 years. I cried a little while after I applied my Latisse, which caused some redness and swelling of the lid, which eventually healed. Two weeks later, I noticed my first floater. Do you think it was caused by the Latisse? I do not know if crying caused the Latisse to get into my eye or if it would affect the vitreous at all, do you have any idea?
@meyetips

I don’t believe that the Latisse eyelash growing product that you are using is the problem. It is a type of product used as an eye drop for glaucoma treatment anyway and is approved be FDA in the US I believe. So getting it in you eye the odd time shouldn’t be an issue.

Hey, have you tried %0.01 atropine sulfate eye drops? You see no eye floaters for 1-2 days since it dilates your pupil. Any thoughts? But !! get a gonioscopic evaluation of your angles before you use it to make sure you’re not a glaucoma suspect.
@meyetips

I haven’t tried atropine. A larger pupil can make floaters less visible, and is part of why floaters are less visible when indoors or wearing sunglasses, but more obvious outdoors or in bright light when pupils go small. Atropine is a prescription drug though and should only be issued by the appropriate professional (in the UK at least).

Thanks for the video, Martin - great information. In your opinion, would isotretinoin (Roaccutane) use in young adults lead to vitreous floaters?
@meyetips
@meyetips 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Barry. The mechanism by which Roaccutane may cause eye related side effects is not fully clear, but it has been reported to cause such problem as dry eyes. There’s even mention of cataract and it can do that, then floaters may be a possibility. It’s not an official reported side effect though. It’s an interesting line of thought, but I suspect we are seeing far more cases of floaters in young people than can be attributed to medications like roaccutane alone though.

The technology to thoroughly examine the vitreous in a living eye is not fully there. Ultrasound scans are currently used in research environments. I used to own fancy 3D eye scanning tech in my previous practice called an OCT, but even that couldn’t give a complete scan of the vitreous. Good question though, and I know some research workers are looking at adapting and innervating new ways to better assess the health of the vitreous for research purposes.

Later I found that when I cured my chronic HCV, I already had another condition - hyperparathiroidism - I had high calcium, and it was even higher on these drugs. So I think it is somehow connected with calcium, and younger poeple doesnt exercise very much, so their calcium is higher.

Not sure if my floaters are due to diet. My diet is fair but I tend to skip meals because I’m busy. I started noticing my floaters about a month ago and during this time I was super busy and and stressed. I really neglected myself nutrition wise. One day I noticed a lot of small black dots in my vision. I went to an ophthalmologist and they did a dilated exam and saw everything looked good and suggest vitreous degeneration. I started drinking more water and I haven’t noticed them like that since. I also went for a follow up appointment 5 weeks later, they dilated me again and assured my retina looked good (different dr this time too). I was also getting migraines. Now I mainly see them when I look for them. Of course praying they don’t get any worse or led to a threatening condition. Plus I’m also considering the SMILE eye procedure. Don’t know how I feel about it quite yet. I’m pretty sensitive about my eyes right now. But we’ll see.

Hi Ari, thanks for sharing your experience. Floaters are, honestly still a mystery in many ways, particularly in young people. Started to see them after a stressful 31 Dec 2019, since my mother died last year and i was feeling sad after the fact. So either they got triggered by stress, or my brain reseted and stopped filtering. They did not find anything at all in my eyes, pretty crazy stuff. I have been going to a retina specialist for the past two months, I began perceiving floaters and became annoyed and I went in to the retina specialist as it was so bothersome. Come to find out I have lattice degeneration and about a dozen holes in my peripheral retina on both eyes. He recommended we laser around the holes to basically weld down the retina to prevent detachment. I have gone for three laser treatments so far and have about 3 to go , just had one done this past Monday actually . The day of and day after there is some aching sensation and then some days later it begins itching. I am only 30 years old and my floaters have had me debating getting a vitrectomy just for floaters. My floaters are a combination of vitreous syneresis and fibers from the many holes in my retina, luckily my macula is fine and I don’t have any vision changes aside from bothersome floaters.

Could there be a correlation between the covid vaccine and increase of eye floaters and other visual disturbances? I am 63 years old and with me it started immediately after at my first jab (VA). Within days I started having flashes of light and sudden increase in eye floaters that could not be explained away through CT scans or MRI or numerous eye exams with dilation.

I developed eye floaters and liquefaction of vitreous mostly after a tick bite and borreliosis infection, and maybe some coinfections. I think infections and immune system response may affect eye vitreous and rest of the body. Some nasty viruses and bacterial infections like herpes virus or lyme disease for example. Also intoxication caused by alcohol, smoking, drugs, bad diet and dehydration affecting our body and ofc the eyes. Lack of oxygen and poor blood flow, if person doesn't move much for example - can force aging process in whole body. Young people out there, Listen! Drug abuse, alcohol, any kind of smoking is POISON to our body! Do sports, eat healthy, stay hydrated, do study, find love of your life and be happy!

I noticed my 1st eye floater at 18. Im now 31 and from then until now I have developed a few more...Because I am OCD it bothered me alot like flies. Im at a point where I am even able to see all the clear liquid aswell and its structures in certain lighting because I also have very good eyesight (eagle eye). What I have noticed after noticing the first one I noticed a few transparent one and over time those ones have become darker or more saturated. So if u ask me i think there are like floater precursers and as time goes they develop into darker shadows and become bothersome. I hope that a cure is discovered so I can enjoy being in a room with white walls or go to the beach and enjoy the views. Feel free to ask me more in my experience. I have seen many opthamologists and I have healthy eyes albeit with floaters
@meyetips
@meyetips 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing Reece. I follow your logic. It may be that the initial floaters you see then collect more collagen filaments and become darker as you suggest. If your floaters never got any worse, would you be comfortable living with them as they are? Or do you feel anxious about them continuing to get worse.

@@meyetips I think its a mind over matter situation and not a one size fits all kind of a thing. What I have noticed is when I think about them I notice them more but if I am occupied with other life distractions I tend not to pay attention to them even though they are still there. However, there are 3 major ones in my right eye and 1 major in left. There is 1 in my right eye more in my lower peripheral vision that is over the years trying to creep into my main vision which I hope dont happen because he looks big shaped like a tomahawk steak.

I meant that it is not a side effect that you would find in text books but, yes people have reported floaters though. If there are any complications such as when creating the corneal flap, heavy-handed use of suction or even an error with the laser then extra floaters or new floaters could form.

I'm 69 and got my first floater about 18 years ago, they are not too bad right now but sometimes more noticeable therefor irritating than other times. I used to vigorously rub my eyes, I wonder if that may have had anything to do with it?
@meyetips
@meyetips 3 жыл бұрын
I’d like to think that our eyes are more robust than that, but depending on factors like whether your are highly short-sighted, then I Imagine that it could be a possibility that very vigorous eye rubbing regularly over a stretch of time could pose a risk of creating floaters. I can’t say that it’s what caused yours, as it may still be more likely chance.

@meyetips
@meyetips 3 жыл бұрын
Hi. Sorry to hear that your having these problems. The halos, glare and starbursts can be due to a lot of things, however in your case it may well be due to the changes in the vitreous that has caused the floaters. PVD is a common cause, but even without a PVD you may be getting some of this from the moving vitreous current. If things get worse or in doubt get another dilated eye examination.
