About 2 weeks ago, I thought my glasses were dirty. The day before my vision was clear, and I had just a few floaters in my right eye which tended to get in my line of sight just when swimming (dating from about 5 years ago). Now my right eye is fully of floaters and tiny black dots (blood?). My optometrist diagnosed a vitreous detachment and I cried in her office. I was complete;y unprepared for this experience. A photo of the eye shows clearly the ring shaped floater you describe. I meet an ophthalmologist next week to discuss possible treatment options.So far, my left eye is unaffected. I am otherwise good health and in my mid 60’s.

I am 55, and I had exactly same, sudden flashes in right eye and boom hazy vision consulted my eye doctor and he diagnosed it's PVD. My vision is still better than 20/20 but on bright day quality is poor. I have been doing a lot of research since they only option is surgery. But surgery is very high risk so I have gladly accepted the fact I have to learn to live with it.

Thank you. My left eye developed floaters last year and today, whilst stuck in traffic, the right eye has it now. Exactly like cobwebs and flashing lights. Had eye exam a few months back, was told the left eye showed no damage but to let them know if any changes occur.

This is an excellent video and very clearly shows what it is like. I've just had PVD a few weeks ago and have this massive floater described in the last scenario. What I'm also experiencing is like a tugging feeling in the eye as the last bits detach (according to my optician). I wasn't sure if the feeling was real as it's not painful.

Thanks for this detailed video! It is the most comprehensive I have seen on floaters so far. I have had (mild) floaters for 30+ years. Good news for any younger readers is that they never got worse. In my mid 60s now and they actually seem to have improved! Can barely even find the ones in my right eye! I think there are 3 possible reasons for this 1) my "near " eyesight has got worse and I can no longer see them as easily, 2) recent supplementation with Vit D3 (at 1000 IU/50lb of body weight), or 3) recent supplementation with P5P (a bio-available form of Vit B6, at 50mg/day). I started the P5P because I learned that people with Morton's foot cannot process B6. I also started Copper supplementation at the same time as P5P (approx. 2mg/day). Vit D3 seems to be highly recommended for eye health. I would really like to know if there is any data on B6 deficiency and eye floaters? It is alarming that 20-30% of people have Morton's foot, so would be B6 deficient, and there appears to be no awareness of this in the medical community.

Sunglasses help a lot, thats true (i used it for years no matters if it is cloudy or sunny, i used it all the time, now i am in the 5th month without them) if people wear glasses all the time, they will form a habit and increase anxiety when they are not used, do you think it is better not to use them to learn about the presence of floaters?

I have a floater which is dark, but I also get like a clear film that seems to come across my eye when I blink and my eye feels slightly sticky which the optometrist said is probably due to hay fever,that was a month ago and the sensation hasn’t eased. He checked the back of my eye and it only showed the one floater, so I assume it is ok. Loved the way you explained the different types of floaters, best video yet and I have watched a few. I had an arc of flash light around the outer edge and developed floaters tgat were like having a dirty snow storm in my entire field of vision. These eventually grouoed together more and lightened in color. They obscure my field of vision a nd are constantly moving all over. About a year 1/2 later, it happened in my other eye. I have aleays had the occasional black dot with squiggly line that moves around, but this new developement is different and much more frustrating. . I have a virtrectomy scheduled this month for one eye. I also have a slight cataract in same eye and dry eye in both. I am 67 years old. Wish me well.

A day or so after my cataract surgery I suddenly got a fairly significant floater. It appears to be attached towards the top (of my vision). It swings across my vision in the opposite direction of my eye movement - when I look to the left, it swings to the right, when I look to the right it swings to the left. It 'swings' because it appears to be attached at the top, so it swings like a pendulum. It is not free floating, does not rotate, and does not float around. Its position is stable. This floater appears clear to me...thick and clear, not thin and dark. Kind of looks like leaves. When I called my surgeon about it, she minimized it, said I would just have to live with it. It has been 5-7 years or so and is still there, although I notice it less. During my regular eye exam today, the doctor didn't seem to know anything about it (this is someone different, not the person who did the surgery). Can you point me toward more information as to what this might be? What is this called? Where in my eye would this be?

I had a sudden increase in eye floaters in my eyes after me recent change in prescription. The optometrist had a look and said she couldn’t find any signs of floaters however confirmed there were no signs of inflammation therefore I did not meet the criteria to be referred on to an ophthalmologist. It’s so frustrating having to live seeing these floaters all the time. Is it worth getting a second opinion or can an ophthalmologist do anything different to what an optometrist can do regarding floaters?

Hello! I love your videos, very educational. I recently had a big increase in floaters these past 4-5 weeks. It started out with a lot of pressure behind my eyes, like sinus pressure. I noticed that when I look at the sky, whether it’s cloudy or clear sky’s, I see what feels like hundreds of small Squigley lines moving like little tadpoles. Those lasted a a couple weeks then I started seeing flashes of light like fireworks. Especially at night when I’m in bed looking at the ceiling, they look like twinkly stars. And throughout the day I see little bursts of light like stars. I went the the eye doctor and he dilated my eyes and said everything looks good and he could see the floaters but my eye looked healthy. He said due to my history of migraines, he believes that played a part in the sudden increase of floaters. Are these floaters normal and will they ever go away or at least decrease? Can taking certain vitamins or supplements help with floaters? Thank you!

Oh wow, this is interesting. Thanks for sharing! Are migraines linked with floaters? I've struggled with chronic migraine, and only in the last few years, new/different floaters that are quite distracting, but ALSO a very prevalent numbing sensation in only one of my eyes. You mentioned sinus pressure behind eye... I wonder if we are describing the same thing. I have seen some specialists and some testing, but no apparent answers/causes.... I would love any more insight into any of this!

@MartinTheOptometrist

Some people do unfortunately have a lot of floaters, but that is more on the extreme side. Floaters may be visible indoors in dim conditions too if you look at a white wall for example. Any light contrasting background can make them more visible, although it’s so much better indoors than in a bright room or outside. Sunglasses can help a lot outdoors.

I have the first type more in the right eye than the left, it came due to diabetes, I went to an optometrist and she said it’s not serious and that the retina is intact and healthy, and that I have to live with it or find a specialist to go through the laser procedure if it’s really annoying, is there any risks from the laser procedure? I mean my floaters are only annoying when I look to very bright objects like sky or computer screen
@MartinTheOptometrist
@MartinTheOptometrist 4 жыл бұрын
Laser for floaters can make things worse sometimes by creating lots of smaller fragments that are also annoying. It is suitable for certain types of floaters depending on size and the depth that it is located in the vitreous. It doesn’t sound like it is necessarily a good idea in your case. I’ve lived with floaters that sound similar to yours for many years myself and I wouldn’t consider an operation unless it was a noticeable obstruction to my vision that could affect driving safely or other tasks. For the right circumstances laser is a worthwhile consideration.

Hi Eerzo. It sounds like you are describing a ring-like floater? I would have a lot more questions that I would need to ask as well as looking at it to be able to say more. However, the safest bet is to get an eye exam to make sure it is not a less common floater that may be due to changes at the back of the eye. It’s unlikely at your age, but it’s important to get it checked.

Very good explanation: I have suffered a posterior vitreous detachment and I see a small ring on the right side, as well as floaters and diffuse areas. I also see some flashes on the right side when I shake my head. The ophthalmologist also found that I had intraocular pressure almost at the limit of what was acceptable for my age. Could it be related to the detachment? Is it not advisable to squeeze your eyes or shake your head abruptly? Working long hours at the computer or with close-up glasses can affect it? The bromelain that pineapple contains can be beneficial?

Thanks for your video! I have something in my eye, not sure if it's a floater - i have a small spot in my right eye that goes blind whenever I blink while staring at something really bright (white). It goes away in a second and then reappears when I blink again. I can barely spot it in the dim light though. I got my eyes checked with this problem and doctor said I'm absolutely healthy, but it doesn't go away..really annoying.. Is that a floater?
@MartinTheOptometrist
@MartinTheOptometrist 4 жыл бұрын
Try looking at a bright white background and after looking straight for a few seconds try looking up for a second, then back straight for a few seconds. If it is a floater you may see it then move as you shake the vitreous gel with the looking up and straight movement. You can repeat it looking left, right and down too as one position may make it particularly more noticeable.

I recently had a pvd and my optician can see a Weiss ring. I can see this as a large floater in my left eye but at the same time I now have millions of small black and grey floaters obscuring my vision making reading pc screens difficult. It’s like black pepper grains swimming around in my vision. This is all the more worrying as my right eye was lazy from birth and is next to useless. Any thoughts on these dots? Hello Martin, thanks for putting together this video. I have been treating a choroidal neovascularization in my left eye for nearly a year, and now suddenly started getting eye floaters in the same eye. Do you think these eye floaters could be related to choroidal neovascularization?
@MartinTheOptometrist
@MartinTheOptometrist 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Fabio, thank you. Your floaters could well be related to the choroidal neovascularisation. But it will depend on different things that relate to how bad it got and whether the vitreous gets involved through any treatment, such as photocoagulation laser surgery or anti-VEGF injections or whether you develop a neovascular membrane. So in theory it could be related, but not necessarily. I hope that makes some sense to you.

Hi Martin, my name is Jackie, I have found your explanation regarding eye floaters the very best. So informative and easy to understand, thank you. Since 2017 I have suffered with stringy eye floaters and was told I would have to live with them. However, as the years have passed they have become really debilitating, I’m 69 yrs old. 2021 had cataracts removed in both eyes. My vision has improved, but the floaters are worse than ever, patches of out of focus blurry clouds obstructing everything I do. Driving is a struggle, as is reading etc. I have been told by hospital doctor “not to look for them because then you won’t see them”. That’s impossible to do because they are always in my line of vision. Should I have to wait 6 months before I go back to hospital as I was told?

Strictly speaking and for your peace of mind, yes you should get all new cases of wye floaters checked out by your optometrist, even if everything else is good. In my experience the vast majority of floaters are not associated with anything more serious like retinal years or detachments though. So get checked just to be cautious.

That's interesting... It could be that your vitreous is now more liquid and you may be seeing the wave of the moving fluid as you move your eyes. This may also explain why there is no physical floater to see. I think I know what you are experiencing because I get it myself along with normal floaters. I notice this wave like a current that reflects light coming down from above - typically in a large retail store with high ceilings. The effect of this ripple-like current makes my eyes water. I concluded that it was my vitreous causing this wave and I suspect it may be a similar thing in your case. If you've been checked out, that's the most important thing - I don't think you need to be worried.

Thanks for this. I've had multiple eye issues (retinopathy with detachment, graves eye disease with grey curtain blindness, pre and post operative cataracts, different grades/types of strabismus, 'occasional' color blindness, and an orbital decompression, and currently glaucoma) but the cloud like donut that was floating around in my field of vision today was weird and new. And scary. The thing is it dissipated within an hour. Is that common for a Weiss Ring? The eye i had it in isn't the one i had the retinal detachment in btw. My vision, though increasingly blurry and poor over the past weeks, has returned to my baseline. (Which is pretty bad admittedly but at least i can see to get around) (I have contacted my optometrist who's followed me through all this and depending on what transpires will either wait to see him or go to the er.) Just curious about the ring settling so quivkly after investigating via google.

If you have Type 2 diabetes, it’s important to get your diet right and adopt a healthy lifestyle because there is a good chance that you can reverse your diabetes. This will stop future diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic floaters due to blood in the vitreous should become less noticeable with time depending how bad they were in the beginning, but may not completely vanish though.
