Napoleon was 5'6 in FRENCH feet. Then ENGLISH feet were slightly smaller. This explains why he's depicted by the English as smaller than he actually was. Well, at least that's what I read on the internet, so make of it what you want! :D`

Reminds me of the reason Russian railways have always had a different (wider) gauge than the Western standard, even though Westerners provided the materials. When the Russians installed them, they laid the rails so as to measure X" distance BETWEEN the rails, whereas the West measured X" between the OUTSIDE EDGE of each opposing rail. The lack of commonality was annoying and time-wasting in normal international transit -- since carriages had to be lifted onto and off of trucks having the Russian gauge -- but valuable in wartime, since enemy railcars could not make a continuous transit onto Russian territory, and captured Russian rolling-stock could not be taken outside the country for use elsewhere.
@blindazabat95273 жыл бұрын
@@roberthaworth8991 Don't tell my that was the cause of Napoleon's debacle in Russia! :D And I'd love to see your take on why Spain has a NARROWER gauge?
@roberthaworth89913 жыл бұрын
@@blindazabat9527 Railroads weren't around when Napoleon invaded Russia. And I can't speak to Spain, but the origin of the Russian gauge is well-known.

I live outside the UK. I used to get my brother to record HIGNFY on VHS cassettes which I picked up on visits home or which he brought when he came here. Sometimes he'd include other stuff he thought I might like, such as Shooting Stars and the early QI series. Aah...nostalgia...
