Worse how ? For tracking issues that can be fixed with firmware updates ? The Cosmos remains the best specced VR wether you want to believe it or not
@UnknownSquid5 жыл бұрын
@@ashcosmo3854 Best Spec'd VR? Index, Paimax, and the HP-Reverb would all disagree. The Cosmos threw in a token 60 pixels more than the Index vertically to try and pretend it's got the better display, but the panels are lower quality and it lacks the FoV improvements to get any actual value out of them. In practice games will be running at the exact same pixel density, just with a tiny bit more on the top and bottom that you can't even see clearly. Even with firmware updates the tracking will still be camera based, which is a major downside vs any lighthouse system, and the additional adaptor+lighthouses+controllers required to make the Cosmos a lighthouse headset puts the total cost of the system in the area of $1300 to $1400. The Cosmos is far from the best spec'd VR. It's a weird middle ground option that was sadly late to the party vs both the Rift-S and the Index. It tried to compete with both at the same time, rushed it's release in a bid for the Christmas sales, and has ultimately failed to win over either side of the market. It was a bold and interesting attempt, but Vive should probably have gone for one or the other more specifically. Either a $500 Rift-S competitor, or a $600 successor to the OG Vive, still featuring lighthouse as it's primary tracking method. Chasing after both ends of the market at once was reckless.

The tracking is simply appalling, as compared to the Rift S, to the point that Beat Saber was virtually unplayable unless I lit my room with flood lights and held my arms in front of me at all times,which was made difficult by those heavy, clunky controllers. Sure, the image quality was better, as long as I could keep the "sweet spot," but I could never keep it for long. On top of all that, Viveport Origin is simply undercooked as a hub environment. The Cosmos is now on its way back for a refund, and I have a new appreciation for the Rift S as a reliable, easy-to-use headset.

I can't beleive high tech hardware like this is using AA batteries in 2019. I like the Cosmos hardware choices, especially being a big fan of the PSVR style HMD and the over the ear headphone style. But the software sounds like it has a loooong way to go. Is this HTC first bout of inside out tracking? Great video, thanks for the info.
@godpinch5 жыл бұрын
I actually prefer the choice for AA batteries in this the s and the quest as with the Eneloops you can have good rechargeable batteries without having to worry about a non replaceable one that will eventually fail. Tbf I wouldn't be that in to having to stick a load of double a's into my phone but to miss the replaceable batteries.
@heehee635 жыл бұрын
The removable batteries are actually a plus. You can just get rechargeable and extra pairs of them so that when one runs out, you just swap them right away. No need to wait for recharging before playing again.
@rlam9055 жыл бұрын
Built-in batteries tend to degrade over time so having the option to put rechargeable AA batteries in is better in my opinion.
@Dante02d125 жыл бұрын
This is one of those *many* cases where there is no "better" solution. "Better" is not a scientific term, I'd like people to stop using this BS when talking about tech. AA batteries have the BIG advantage of being quickly replaceable, plus it has a way bigger autonomy, and for the same autonomy it is lighter than the usual batteries. But they have the BIG issue of being more expensive in the end and must be stocked if you don't want to run out of it (it happened to me... a lot... xD). Personally, I choose AA batteries whenever I can. Rechargeable batteries simply don't have a good enough autonomy (that's actually the BIGGEST issue in electronics).

i got a lenovo explorer for about $440NZD shipped off amazon. at the time the only alternative was dell visor for $970nzd in nz. so i got the wmr from amazon for like $240usd or so.. i have been very very happy with it. half the reason i bought it was because at the time there was so little vr hmd's available in nz, and at such a premium that i could easily not only sell it without a loss, but even profit. so it was win win. i very quickly decided to keep it though. amazing stuff. tracking isnt perfect but otherwise its amazing. i play dirt rally and project cars 2 every weekend at least a bit. also onward every weekend or two. i love it. other games not so much.. i still dont get the hype around beat saber.. i find it kinda boring and cheesy. but each to their own.

It is not a failure. It is insane that Oasis made it sound like that. He did a hit piece on HTC. He was even unable to play any games to test the battery life wtf? I have played 17 games as of now that worked directly. I did very little tracking issues, similar to the Quest.
@SUNSET695 жыл бұрын
@@jalbrekt706 I guess we'll just have to wait and see if hand/finger tracking becomes mainstream or not, and from what we saw oculus show off this past week it still looks like valve's the best option unless oculus greatly improve what they already shown off. I'll admit though at this point the only 2 serious HMD's in the running at the Index and the Quest. Quest tethering alone has probably killed HTC for good if it wasn't already dead after the Rift S and Index made the Vive Pro obsolete.

OK but what are our options here in Australia? Index is unavailable with no release date in sight, and given it's US$999 price tag I suspect will be near the A$2K mark once shipping and import taxes are factored in (Cosmos is retailing for A$1299 here). No local distribution at all for the Rift S means it has to be bought direct from the US which doesn't sit well with me as I suspect sorting out warranty issues would be a costly nightmare. Not to mention the fact the S appears to be a technically inferior product to the Vive (but not by much). As someone who has been holding off getting into PC VR since CV1, the Cosmos seems to be the only realistic option on the Australian market at the moment. Am I wrong ?

I've read and watch a lot of reviews before deciding the buy the Cosmos. I can tell you the tracking works great for me as long as I turn the lights on in my room. I have 4 LED down lights for my study room which is 4m by 4m. I've owned the original Vive, the Vive Pro and now the Cosmos and I can tell you the Cosmos is hands down the best VR experience I ever had. I played beat saber and the tracking is just so fast and faultless. I don't know why some people complain about tracking issues which I've had none whatsoever. I also love the fact that I don't have to turn on the lighthouse sensors as the cosmos requires none. My Vive Pro sensors used to make buzzing noises and it's annoying as hell. HTC has nailed it this time, the Cosmos is a clear winner with higher resolution than the Valve Index VR.
