To further clarify a few points, because I think there's some misconceptions in the comments: 1. The contrast comparison (and in fact all the footage) was recorded and displayed by me, and not provided by any company. The contrast example I made to show how it felt to me subjectively in dark scenes. In hindsight, I should have showed more examples in bright scenes for more variety of image comparisons, instead of just dark scenes. To show that the Index looks spectacular most of the time. But I stand by what I said in the video: Dark scenes have a visible difference between OLED and LCD displays. 2. I did neglect to include the frame rate upgrade that the Index provides. In my original Index review I wasn't able to achieve good enough performance on my PC to experience the higher frame rates → kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJ-yfXyOlpmXeKM, so I don't have any personal experience seeing a difference there. 3. In the end I think the Index is obviously the overall winner. At 11:36 the Index won 4 categories compared to the Pro winning 2 categories. Just because the Pro has 2 good points doesn't make it the overall winner. Thanks for watching!!

overall a pretty good comparison but I've got a couple of issues with it. 1. you didn't mention the benefits of the LCD screen, having much less screen door effect at the cost of slightly worse contrast, meaning you get a sharper image, which is a good trade-off imo. 2. you also didn't mention the much, much higher refresh rate of the index, being able to go up to 120hz or an experimental 144hz mode. 3. the index has a few small hardware things to it, such as an insert for smaller heads, and that front trunk thing with a USB port which opens up a lot of modding possibilities from third parties or valve themselves, such as wireless adapters. overall pretty good comparison, just wanted to point these things out for anyone who's still deciding. really the only reason to go with the vive pro is if you can't live without the colors from an OLED screen, or if you really want that wireless adapter, although you're paying at least 100 dollars more for just the HMD and wireless adapter, paying 400 more if you want the headset with old Vive controllers and base stations, and paying 600 more if you want the 2.0 base stations and new controllers. it really isnt worth it imo, the pro is very obviously aimed at businesses which seems to be HTCs main market right now, while the index is meant for consumer VR.

I just bought a Vive Pro but what I really wanted was the Index - I had no choice as Valve does not sell the Index in the Asia region (or outside USA at the moment). But it was not the Index's FOV, 144HZ refresh rate or audio which attracted me, it was the fact that it is made by the same people who owns and runs Steam (SteamVR) + their superior controllers. But I found out that the Index controllers are fully compatible with the Vive Pro so that's a consolation. I bought the Vive Pro mainly because of its AMOLED displays. I also realized that a 120/144hz refresh rate doesn't mean a thing if your computer can't run games at that framerate, so I would prefer to max out the details and boost the framerate rather than the other way round. I would still say that the Index is the superior controller irregardless.

I think the 2.0 lighthouses have other benefits like sub milimeter tracking, better at dealing with occlusion, and better at tracking well when you're in "blind sports" where you're 45 degrees to one station. When you say "display," what about pixel response time, subpixel arrangement, frame rate, and so on? I love my Vive's contrast and might bring it our for small horror game, but I've heard that a lot of Vive Pro users are upgrading to the Index and consider the display's benefits to outweigh the darkness contrast. Have you tried the Quest, it has a similar resolution to the Pro in an OLED panel.
@neurokinetik64ES5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the 2.0 tracking is not to be underestimated. It's not just the support for larger spaces. It also gives the ability to use more than two base stations, which can make the tracking flawless in my experience. I'm currently having to use 1.0 base stations and Vive wands because one of my Index controllers broke, and it's a noticeable downgrade. Just holding your controller out and panning around in a circle you can see little glitches when only one base station is visible to the controller. With 2.0 (and three base stations for me), it's perfect.

I added two 1.0 base stations to a 20x20 foot area to try and boost the two 2.0(which were having negligible hmd tracking issues in the middle of the room with hands raised blocking the hmd line of sight, a very specific position discovered while troubleshooting/testing.) The overall system performance decreases with the addition of 1.0 bases. The 2.0 bases work almost 8m away more than double their rated distance. If you get a thinner face pad for the Vive Pro, you can get the lenses very close to your eyes to the point where your eye lashes almost touch the lenses. From what I've heard this makes the Field of View comparable to the Index and you get a bigger sweet spot. I also tried the Index Controllers. They are great, but seem to be designed for below average sized hands and were not as comfortable as I hoped them to be. In the end I did return them, also because they had this widespread problem with the thumbstick. And last but not least: The Vive wands are adequate and work fine. So in the end the real benefit of the Index is the higher refresh rate (for as far as that really makes a difference to people) , the tiny bit larger FoV, the lower price and better audio. Drawbacks are: LCD instead of OLED and no wireless option. To me that sounds like the VIve Pro holds up pretty well!

@@OverbiteGames The Vive Pro after 2 years is still an excellent headset with a field of view almost the same as the Index. So yeah, it still holds up pretty well. Haven't found a good reason to replace the thing, even after 2 years. I'm amazed because I expected new headsets would make this thing obsolete rather quickly. I would say the Index will have probably slightly better visual than the rift s, and close to the same black levels. since they both are using the same type of screens, that being said I only have the rift s right now, but the black levels on the screens in that are really good. I think your mockup of the black levels between the two headsets is a little too exaggerated. But from everything I've seen, the Index wins hands down, and that is why I've put myself on the waiting list for one, rather than order a vive pro. [ok so the index controllers were a huuuge factor in that as well. I like their design so much more than the vive's, mind you I like the oculus touch controllers more than the vive as well.]

If you get a 6mm foam from VRCover, the Vive Pro FOV should very nearly match the Index FOV, and the same applies to the OG Vive. The default Vive foam is excessively thick and is the only reason it loses on FOV. I replaced mine back in 2016 when VRCover came out with the thin ones.

Now the index is nice, and this is a big problem, but I'm not sure how common it is, but I know someone who had their valve index's audio just completely die, no explanation just no audio, a hardware issue supposedly, which was really the thing that makes me personally prefer the vive pro... Ok so about the vibe being able to go wireless, the reason it would be worse for the valve index is because it runs at a higher hertz and refresh rate so it being wireless would slow it down, with the vibe it’s not as advanced in that regard so wireless is fine, the industry has got to find the balance of quality and wireless
@pizzyfpv5 жыл бұрын
You didn't mention the optics, you can also use thinner foam to get vive pro closer to eyes, I modded my vive lens and would do that if I get a pro, you also didn't mention the higher hz of the Index. I would tell people get the Index for less dark games and get pro for dark games.

The Vive Pro wins for me because of wireless. I was excited about the Index but no wireless support kills it for me so I didn't get one. Good video, the Index seems like a winner all-around. The Vive's wireless accessory is overrated as it lasts for 3 hours and then dies with no warning, and Gabe Newell has expressed interest in bringing a similar wireless system to the Index. Not to mention you're adding about $300 to a $1,400 purchase as is, making it nearly $2,000 - double the price of the Index with the same old-fashioned controllers that are pretty shitty for most VR games. The Index controllers are the meta and nobody can tell me otherwise; I refuse to go back to track pads after having two joysticks in VR, it's a no-brainer. The true blacks are definitely a factor but like you said, I don't notice the difference anymore. Surprised Vive would let you give an unbiased opinion, to be honest. If I were them I'd be pissed if I gave someone a $1400 item for free and they said "yeah but it's not as good as their competitor." I think that really speaks to your honesty, most reviewers would be tempted to sell out and say "These guys are paying me, so I agree with whatever they say!"

After all these years, used Vive Pro still can be a good choise, because you can swap it frenel lenses to aspheric pretty easily, and it boosts visual quality drastically. Big sweetspot, no more blur and godrays are gone. Just big clean picture all over the lenses. It looks more clean then even something like the Pico 4 pancake lenses did. And aside that, you still got that bright picture without any type of compression, when all these wifi type of streaming always eat some part of your final image. Sadly, Vive mic is ass, so you need something else to replace it, lol

So I watched this just now as an Index owner that now needs a new HMD out of warranty plus plenty of other RMA's and other out of warranty expenses. When comparing specs and design and performance intentions plus the apparent value of the entire kit the Index wins over the Vive Pro and the Vive Pro 2 still today.; But those specs mean nothing when your headset and components are two flawed to last long enough to qualify as an investment. I don't want to buy a Vive Pro 2 in 2022 either. I an considering either the Vive Pro or the Cosmos Elite HMD because I can get either for $300 used. I already own the lenses and adapters to do the Gear VR mod on either choice. So as long as the headset functions I'm going to have like new undamaged lenses either way. More importantly both seem to have better track records for quality and durability than Index kits. The only reason I considered the Cosmos was the possibility of using it for VR DJing depending on how VRChat responds when the headset is flipped up and whether or not the hand tracking can show in VRChat the Cosmos had some potential to be the right tool for that use case. With all things considered though, I need my daily driver to be the best daily driver it can be and cosmos flip feature introduces compromises to the comfort, sweet spot, etc that take too much away from my VR experience verses what I have been used to with the Index and the CV1 before that. Front heavy and I do not get along at all. I'm confident that the Vive Pro can serve me well until I desire to upgrade to something else. The Index proved it would not and Valve proved they don't care. at all about lasting value. I learned a lesson that will apply to all their hardware like the Steam Deck and whatever they name their "next gen" VR headset..

Both devices are great. But lcd vs oled is huge difference. Yea sde decreases with lcd but I still believe it is a huge trade off. In that category the best is PSVR. Yea it has lower res, but best of the best panel compared to any consumer VR hmd on the market. I just hope PC VR comes to that point with 3rgb pixel layout but oled screens, and high res with around 130 140 fov. Can't wait for 2nd gen but looks like we need at least 2 years for that.. Let's hope someone does something fast. Thanks for your review Ben.
