So something about Vivian's ending, where she goes back to her sisters, you think its because the shadow sirens' only purpose was to serve the shadow queen, and unlike Vivian who had a found family to help her find her own purpose his sisters would be totally lost? I know its not in the text itself but i much prefer "im helping them because they deserve a chance at happiness despite what they've done" to "im sticking by them because they're family" it fits her character and themes more
@dustymcwari44687 ай бұрын
Its also possible Vivian became the leader of the group, and its stated Beldam had a change of heart after the defeat of the Shadow Queen, maybe after that happened she lost faith in taking over the world, and seeing how much better Vivian fared while being with the good guys compared to her who stuck with the dark side, she may've reconsidered her life choices

A line in the Japanese script; "それに じつは アタイ・・・ 体は オトコのコだけど ココロは カワイイ オンナのコなの" "The thing is... I... I have a boy's body, but my heart is a cute girl's!" (using feminine first person pronouns)
@Xenomnipotent7 ай бұрын
'B-but Vivian is a crossdresser. He's a man!' Nope. Vivian is degradingly called 'otokonoko' by Beldam. Otokonoko has two meanings depending on the kanji used: 男の子 = boy 男の娘 = male daughter / crossdresser / femboy However, in SPM it is written in katakana (オトコノコ) which could mean either, but the first meaning (boy) is SIGNIFICANTLY more common and it can be reasonably inferred to be saying 'boy'. The second one is a pun and only really used in niche circles. It is also important to note that 'otokonoko' is only used by Beldam, who the story frames as an antagonist and awful person for mistreating Vivian (e.g., Vivian introduces themselves as the 3 shadow sisters. Beldam insults Vivian for using the word sisters, stating that she's a boy, and forcing her to apologize). So even if it were using the second definition, it would be completely meaningless since Beldam is constantly shown by the narrative itself to demean Vivian and not respect her identity. Other characters, as well as Vivian herself, describe her as a woman and use feminine pronouns when mentioning her. TL;DR, Vivian is trans. Cope.
@Xenomnipotent7 ай бұрын
"O-oh yeah? The JP script also has the line 'He may look like a girl, but he's actually a boy.' That CONFIRMS Vivian is a man for sure!" Nope. This quote is used as a 'gotcha!' as if this isn't just a way to convey the message that Vivian is MtF to the audience in 2004. Do you really expect Japan to use and explain the meaning ofトランスジェンダー in 2004 when that wasn't even a word commonly used in America at the time? The simple fact is, Vivian self-identifies as a girl despite being born “male”, and the word for that in our language, which the *author does not have control or authority over* is “transgender woman”. At that point, it really doesn’t matter that the narrator says. TL;DR, Vivian's direct statements on her identity overwrite _ALL_ other statements about her identity. It is really that simple. Cope.
@Xenomnipotent7 ай бұрын
"W-well even if Vivian is a trans woman, it adds NOTHING to the story! It's just woke pandering!" Nope. Vivian being trans IS a huge part of her character and overall story. Her being bullied over her identity is what causes her to leave the Shadow Sirens and join Mario as an ally. Also, her being trans definitely adds subtext to a chapter all about Mario literally having his body taken from him and having friends turning on him, to the point where he couldn't even say his own name so he has to steal it back. TL;DR, Trying to downplay Vivian being trans is downplaying the themes of the story and the entire character itself. Cope.

@@XenomnipotentGoombella initially calls him a girl and then corrects herself to say boy in her original Japanese description of the character, and there are much more common Japanese terms used for trans people, but they used otonoko which is more commonly used for femboys. I was also a bit confused at first but pretty quickly accepted that. Like oh, she used to be a boy but now she's a girl, cool". Her being the victim of Beldam's bullying felt a lot more relevant to her character to me (which is kind of why I'm a bit sad that they removed Beldam's transphobic lines in the remake, weird as that sounds - it was a great way to tie those two aspects of her character together). For context, I played the Italian version, which is probably the most explicit about Vivian being trans.

Yeah, it flared up again alright lol. THANK you for this video. I think around 2006-ish I originally went digging trying to find the skinny on exactly what Vivian's deal was, and it was an endless rabbit hole of arguments in both directions. I just kind of gave up with an at-best vague and conflicted understanding. Now that the conversation has erupted again in [current year], of _course_ trying to find an answer regarding the original Japanese script is the same spiteful back-and-forth again except even worse. This video is honestly the most convincing presentation out of anything I've managed to dig up. So much of what I've seen is bickering over technicalities of exact language which may have been left deliberately ambiguous in the first place. I don't think I've ever heard anyone explain the thematic implications before, and of anything the revelation that Vivian is so adamant about helping Mario recover his _identity_ is what finally gave me that lightbulb moment. It'd be neat to have a video more granularly dissecting the original script from this perspective, but this finally got the point across. From the sound of it the new English translation may have done away with some of the ambiguity of the original, but still tackles it pretty tastefully and is surely the first time something like this has managed to actually make it into an NOA release which is kind of insane. Something _challenging_ finally slipping through the ironclad filter of that company's squeaky-clean, sanitized, family-friendly image.

I'm pretty irritated that the English localization censors her identity; having played the game as a kid, I've been wondering lately how much sooner I might have figured myself out had they been more explicit with her trans identity, had I just been *allowed* to know that trans people exist and that it's okay to seek equilibrium with your identity and presentation. This is why representation is so important for us queer folk and minorities in general. Along with the ridiculous Grodus reveal, what also didn't sit right with me about the epilogue was Beldam suddenly becoming a good person just because the Shadow Queen was destroyed when resurrecting the Shadow Queen was Beldam's master plan from the very beginning. Unless they were implying that she was being influenced or mind-controlled in some fashion, they should've done a better job at explaining it. Otherwise, it just comes across as bizarre at best and mind-fumblingly dumb at worst because you have to remember that Beldam had still verbally abused and tormented Vivian, that you seriously trust she'll never do anything to Vivian again? If you ask me, having a family abuse victim join back with their abusers... doesn't feel like a good lesson to teach to children, especially children who are victims of abuse (maybe even by their own family members) like Vivian. Like Beldam, Marilyn, and Doopliss, pretty much get away with no consequences for their actions. So, instead, what I would like to do is have Goombella tell Mario that Vivian has been trying to socialize with more people now (her being a transgender female could also work well, too) and also have Vivian helping out others who feel like they're unwanted. As for Beldam and Marilyn, why not have a post-game side quest where you choose to help them seek redemption when they (mostly Beldam) feel like there's nothing left for them in the world now that they're plan has failed? Maybe it could even involve the Palace of Shadow again where they even talk about their own lives as well and you could help them see that there's more to a world than just following orders and/or taking it over. Actually, they should be punished for their crimes somehow. I know they probably don't deserve to be redeemed, and it's pretty cheesy, too, but, honestly, anything could've worked better than that part of the epilogue we got in the base game. If anything, it's a dangerous message to say that it's okay for abuse victims to join back with their former abusers. It's like the game is saying that abuse can be completely disregarded as long as they're family. And this wasn't even Nintendo's first time pushing an awful message in their games, just look Pokemon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon and Pokemon Scarlet & Violet. It's also very contradictory to Vivian's character arc in Chapter 4, as she states herself that she is not planning on going back to her family.

No, she says she's a girl. You are just outright lying, what is wrong with you?

It's not really the original. That would be the Japanese version in which she is trans. The English version CHANGED the original story to remove any mention of her being trans. If you refuse to believe that the Japanese version states that, you are lying to yourself.
