Excellent review of this lovely piece of vintage gear, backed up by fine images demonstrating the qualities/attributes of which you speak. So far, I've used mine only with color negative film, but your images have inspired me to get busy with some fine grain B/W as well as slide films. Thank you, from a new subscriber!

Thank you! Yes the 28f1.9 is very impressive. I’ve compared it to the Vivitar 28 f2.5 which I also like and the f1.9 is brighter at f2.5 and sharper. It’s a cool little lens that I’m happy to own.

Awesome review. I’m looking to expand my vintage set and I currently have a canon 50mm 1.4 FD chrome ... would this be a good addition/ match aesthetic-wise? TIA
@studiotrejo3047
@studiotrejo3047 3 жыл бұрын
Hello thank you for watching! I would say that it would pair well in the sense that the field of view (90mm) would give you a tighter look and great bokeh. Unfortunately I don't own a chrome nose so as far as color rendition my opinion would be limited. But both will give you a filmic feel and they will pair nicely in that sense.

Thank you for watching! This lens in particular is a Nikon F mount but they come in different mounts. Even though I have personally not seen an M42 I don't see why it would not exist. @@studiotrejo3047 That's the issue there, trying to keep costs at a minimum and the adapter goes for $200 or so, even more expensive than the lens, thought I've seen some 3rd party F to Z adapters I could use.

I was just looking at the official Vivitar Series 1 90mm f/2.5 Macro lens parts manual (1976 by Ponder & Best) and it lists the lens as coming in Mount-types for: Minolta, Canon, Nikon, Olympus, but also "Universal". What is "Universal"?
@studiotrejo3047
@studiotrejo3047 Жыл бұрын
Good question, the universal mount is also known as the M42 mount. It screws on to the camera instead of a bayonet where a tab is used to release the lens. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

I used the later 105mm version of this lens for some years until it was stolen. I used it only for close-ups and semi-macros, often hand-held. A superb lens, both build and optically. The advantage of the 105mm is that it does not need the separate adapter to reach the 1:2 - 1;1 focus range.

The Vivitar 105 was designed and manufactured by Kiron, quite different approach compared to the Tokina. Corner sharpness and bokeh a tad inferior, but mechanically top notch and a joy to handle.

Unfortunately the other Series 1 primes do not do macro. But they can focus relatively close. the VS1 28mm .3 mt 1 ft, 135mm .9 mt 3ft, 200mm 1.2 mt 4ft. For the time this was pretty close focusing especially for the 135mm and the 200 mm. But yes if you wanted a sharp macro lens with vintage vibes this is the one to get.

Hello thank you for watching! Hopefully I can answer your question, this is based on the Nikon F mount version. Basically you put both the lens and the adapter on f/5.6. then attach the adapter to the lens like you normally would. Once it locks then you can move the aperture ring without it separating. Hi there. I just picked up one of these lenses. I am still waiting on an adapter to come in the mail so I cant use the lens yet. one thing I noticed is that the aperature blades do not appear when I am adjusting the aperature ring. Not sure if this is because the aperature blades are stuck or if its the "automatic diaphragm control". maybe it'll work once I put it on the camera idk, but the lever on the mount doesn't make the aperature blades stop down either... can't find much online so if anybody has something that helps I'd appreciate it.

Hello thank you for reaching out. It sounds like the aperture blades may be stuck, usually because of oil on the blades. My first question would be what mount is your lens for?

@friendlyalpaca5727 4 ай бұрын
I also dont know if it will even work either way because it has the automatic diaphragm control mechanism and i dont know if it will work with just a N/F-sony E mount. Like i said ive been looking all over google and reddit and other forums but i havent found much info. I will likely end up disassembling the camera either way because there is some minor fungus and haze on the elements. But a little nervous to do so without any disassembling or reassembling instructions I can find.
@studiotrejo3047
@studiotrejo3047 4 ай бұрын
@@friendlyalpaca5727 so it sounds like the blades are stuck. Your Sony e adapter would give it the proper distance for your lens to reach infinity focus but it wouldn’t control aperture since this is a fully manual lens. I also have the F mount version. I would start with the front element removal and see if you can reach the aperture chamber then use alcohol or lighter fluid which works faster and use a q tip to spread it. Make sure it’s at f/22 when you’re doing it. Keep at it and eventually the blades will pop out revealing the oil. Now you clean the blades/open the aperture and close the aperture. The blades will most likely get stuck again depending on the amount of oil. Repeat the above until it no longer stays stuck. Remove the rear elements and do the same on the other side of the blades. This will save you from completely disassembling the lens. I didn’t find a repair manual but this may help. learncamerarepair.com/product.php?product=508

@@studiotrejo3047 ok thank you! To confirm since you have the same lens. Are the aperature blades supposed to move when you adjust the aperature ring or does it stay wide open as described by the “automatic diaphragm control”? If it does stay wide open is there a way to trigger it with just a standard adapter or do i need a specialty adapter? Sorry if you already answered this. Still just a little confused. Thank you though. The parts manual will help a lot!
