Fun Fact: the character Max was originally intended to be a fat Russian man, but Tom Cruise told the Director Brian De Palma it would be cool if they hired for Vanessa Redgrave… And she was happy to do it because she wasn’t offered many action movie roles. She one of the best things about the movie.

It's always fun in these kinds of movies where you get that character that just doesn't fit in but somehow makes it more realistic.

That was an absolutely phenomenal choice to cast her in this role. She was so calm and collected throughout the movie, except when it was time to actually start the transfer...that was the only time she really started showing any sort of anxiety. And I love how they connected her to the newer movies with Vanessa Kirby.

@@istvankeri6688it was beloved at the time, but was HIGHLY flawed. Many forget that despite its high quality, many classic MI fans hated MI1 because it made Phelps the villain. 3 sort of built off 1 but reset the tone, and 4 cemented the formula of it being an increasingly expanding team action/suspense IP with real stunts and solid writing. But what 2 established is that Hunt is a virtuoso action/ninja/spy with unflappable nerves, unshakable ethics, and who hardly ever kills but always risks it all to save the innocent and give second chances... essentially what if Captain America was James Bond. I love John Woo, but MI2 and faceoff are stains on his reputation.

Hey, Vicky! This franchise is based on the 1960s TV SERIES and its 1980s revival both starring Peter Graves. Both runs of the series were more about long cons by a small team of operatives such as the opening set piece and relied on the gimmick of wearing disguises and utilizing cool spy gadgets. The movies retain those elements but are more about white-knuckle stunts performed by Cruise himself! The LALO SCHIFRIN score is one of TV's most iconic themes and never fails to set the electrifying pace! What many people don't realize is that JON VOIGHT is playing JIM PHELPS, the team leader of the TV series played by PETER GRAVES in the '60s original and '80s reboot! That means the hero of the series turns into the villain of the movie! Graves was actually approached for a cameo but he didn't like the twist about his signature character and declined to participate. Phelps kills his young wife because his ego couldn't tolerate her being attracted to his young protege. He wanted absolute loyalty and commitment from her which she betrayed by coming to Ethan's defense. Having her work in close proximity to a guy like Ethan, Phelps' September-May relationship was doomed from the get-go! Lol. The hot youngsters' mutual attraction was evident in the first scene! The series is mostly consistently excellent and is one of the best action franchises ever made! The first three films are products of their directors bearing their undeniable signatures. This was every inch a BRIAN DEPALMA film with POV shots, flashback sequences and low-angle vantage points. DePalma was most definitely inspired by JULES DASSIN's heist films for the famous Langley caper scene. In both 1955's "RIFIFI" and 1964's "TOPKAPI", the intricate thefts are plotted out for the audience, executed in SCORELESS SILENCE, initiated from a ceiling ingress and nearly foiled with a slip. The second film is every inch a JOHN WOO movie and the third film is every inch a J.J. ABRAMS movie.

The famous theme song was done by Lalo Schifrin, who also did the Rush Hour films. Another example of his iconic music was for Bruce Lee’s greatest film, *Enter The Dragon* which turns 50 this month, and remains the standard for martial arts films and fight choreography. Speaking of Rush Hour, a young Jackie Chan also appears as a stuntman in it!

The "First" Mission: Impossible was a TV series from 1966 to 1973. And later revived in 1988-1990. It was an ensemble cast where a team of specialists led by Jim Phelps ( Paul Graves ) would take on missions. Each member had a specialty like explosives, disguise, electronics, weapons, etc. and it was about the team not some over-paid ham actor. It was kinda like Columbo where you are trying to figure out what they are doing during the program. More cerebral, less quick quips and explosions.

While the series does ultimately get better further down the line, I do have a real soft spot for this first film. It's the kind of film that gets better the more you watch it, all the plot twists and double crosses make it quite bewildering and confusing when you first watch it, but once you know what's going on the whole thing becomes so much more entertaining and enjoyable. I also appreciate how different this feels from the rest of the series, it's more like a grounded suspense thriller than the big explosive stunt-driven extravaganzas that the later films ended up being. Honestly, getting an absolute icon of cinema like Brian De Palma to direct this was an inspired move, it's such a fantastically well-directed film, coupled with an absolutely killer script; no disrespect to the later films, but none of them has had a line that goes as hard as "Kittridge, you've never seen me 'very upset'." The next one is quite a big step down in quality, but after the third film it just keeps getting better and better with each new film. Really looking forward to seeing you react to the rest of the series, this is legitimately one of the best action series, and maybe even one of the best film series in general.
@Do0msday

I completely agree. The first movie feels the most realistic of the franchise. The plot does involve twists and turns, but it's very linear compared to future plots. Of course the other movies involve action and heists and what not, but this movie really lays down one damn solid foundation to build the franchise on. I still think it's the best overall movie in the franchise, but they do improve. I'm rather partial to Rogue Nation, Fallout, and even Dead Reckoning (Part 1) although I do love anything from 3 and beyond. Agreed about MI:2 being a bit meh. It's not bad and it has a lot of action, but for me it's a bit corny and over the top and definitely stands out from the entire franchise and not in a good way.

What up V. Late comment. M:I is among many to hit television series of the 1960s Spy craze. My introduction to M:I was the second series from the late 1980s that featured characters of the original series with newer characters. Tom Cruise in the mid-1990s officially became a producer by forming a company with Paula Wagner. Both were given the greenlight for the rights to make M:I as an movie. This was 1 of 2 films for Cruise in 1996 (the other was Jerry Maguire). This first film matches the tv series at almost perfect beat. Thanks to this franchise, Cruise becomes a even bigger movie star and the consummate stunt performer we know today. The legendary theme by Lalo Scrifrin is so timeless with Intrigue and excitement. Adam Clayton & Larry Mullen from the group, U2 did the new version for the 1st movie. As reruns of the tv series resurged during the movie's success, Cruise definitely had a franchise. Also there was tie-in media, the video game by Ocean and the M:I comic book series aka The Ethan Hunt Chronicles from Marvel. I couldn't wait for more missions as an fan, coming soon and I chose to accept them all.

For the vault scene, Tom used English Pound Coins in his shoes to shift his weight, because every genuine pound coin weighed exactly the same amount in grams. In the series, Jim Phelps was the protagonist, not Ethan Hunt. Tom also hated film franchises, & vowed never to be in any, before he agreed to film M:I 2, he did some stunts in the 1st film, but he loved the thrill of it too much, & decided he'd do as many as possible from then on in his career.

I guess a interesting fact would be that most people these days only know the Mission Impossible films and not that it's based off an old TV show (I used to watch it as a kid on Nickelodeon) and that Peter Graves, the original actor that played the main character and hero, Jim Phelps from the show was asked to reprise his character for the movie. He, however, declined because he didn't approve of his character's villainous turn in the movie. He played Jim Phelps for so long and knew the character well enough to insist he would never turn his back on the agency. So they hired Jon Voight to take his place.

arguably not. Tom Cruise's movies of the 1980's were better known including among others, Risky Business, All the Right Moves, Top Gun, Color of Money, Born on the Fourth of July, Days of Thunder, A Few Good Men and The FIrm. Emilio Estevez notable appearances in the same era were The Breakfast Club, Young Guns, St Elmo's FIre and Maximum Overdrive, Mighty Ducks franchise and the first Loaded Weapon. Between Ghost Protocol and Rogue Nation, Tom Cruise did Edge of Tomorrow, Oblivion, the first Jack Reacher film, then spends three years making Top Gun 2 following the Mummy, Mission Impossible; Fallout, and the second Jack Reacher film. Emilio has done more producing/directing than acting through the 1990's/2000's including mainstream popular crime/police procedural shows among others.

When Greg Morris (who played electronics expert Barney in the original 'Mission: Impossible' TV series) saw this movie at the theater and discovered that the Jim Phelps character was a villain, he angrily got up and left. This movie was quite polarizing, alienating a good number of the original series' fans. It's one thing to pass the torch from Jim Phelps to Ethan Hunt, but did they have to make Phelps a traitor? In my personal canon, the real Jim Phelps (prior to the beginning of this movie) was captured and replaced with an enemy agent. Aside from that, this was a decent movie.

If you go for the whole franchise you'll hear a lot of crap talked about the second movie, but it holds a special place in my heart out of the first 3, with the first being (to me) just a well-directed thriller with a bit better action than normal and the third being a snooze in general other than a pretty good villain (I'm being literal, I had to watch it twice after falling asleep the first try). The second one goes over the top hard. It's a John Woo movie more than a Mission Impossible movie, and I'm cool with that - hope you dig it, too.

0:14 what?! Thats makes me feel old 😭 2:14 it’s definitely not dumb - 26:30 see 😂 16:04 awkward… You’re gonna love this series… MI2 is the worst one in the series, and it’s not even bad, but with that said, once you get past MI2, they just keep getting better and better and better… after MI3 they don’t get numbers in the title, just a name, so 4 - Ghost Protocol, 5 - Rogue Nation, 6 - Fallout. The newest one that’s out in theatres right now (Dead Reckoning part 1), is for me tied top of the series with Fallout. Dead Reckoning part 2 is in the later stages of filming and due to release next year… which is frustrating as I, and I’m sure many others, don’t want to wait that long. If/when you get around to Schindler’s List, you’d best have a box of tissues at the ready. It hits hard.

Fun fact: no optical nor CGI was used for the magician tricks. That was all Tom Cruise's.

Personal opinion. This is the best in the series. Subtle but well executed. Made by one of my favourite directors Brian de Palma. He’s got some great movies you should watch 😊

You explained to us how you’d respond to someone sitting so close to you…However, you’re not a geeky, not-particularly-attractive bureaucrat suddenly surprised to find a beautiful woman sitting next to him. Put yourself in his shoes. He’s thinking, ‘I can’t believe this! Does this mean she’s into me? And when she touches his shoulder, he certainly does feel it, but he’s wondering if she’s being flirtatious. If it weren’t for the emetic she put into his drink, he’d be on cloud nine all afternoon, wondering if he’ll see her again the next day. There’s a reason she plays that particular role in the heist.

Can't wait for you to see the others! MI2 is a little campy, but 3 to 6 are freaking gold!
