This is actually Zack Snyder's favorite film, mostly because this was released exactly the way he wanted it. A good majority of his Director's Cuts; Watchmen, Rebel Moon, Batman v Superman, and especially Justice League, all had studio-mandated theatrical recuts, with his original cuts being released on DVD. This is one of his only major works where the theatrical cut IS the Director's Cut. He did admit there were a few scenes left on the cutting room floor, but they barely made any significance on the story, so it didn't compromise the movie in any way.

Early on, during the bar scene, you mentioned that Clark had such self control. Several comics/tv episodes/etc have made the point that one of Clark's big struggles is holding himself back, not from releasing his anger, but from simply using his normal strength. He is an M1 Abrams tank in China Shop with priceless Ming Dynasty vases, and *every single action* has to be held back from his "normal" strength or he risks hurting the ones he loves. Yeah. His self control is amazing.
@tomr557720 күн бұрын
I like the contrast of Zod & Clark's upbringing. Clark is unable to do anything but help - that's what all 4 of his parents gave him, that moral compass you mentioned. Zod? "I exist only to serve krypton". Zod sees his one purpose, The one that he was literally built for, as the only possible way. so yes, he will save Krypton even if it means genocide or anything else. powerful commentary about what shapes a person.
@kryptonianguest190319 күн бұрын
Yup. This movie's main theme is freedom versus societal control. Zod's people decided he was going to be their hero before they started growing him. All four of Clark's parents wanted him to choose for himself. That's why the book Clark was carrying when those kids were bullying him was Plato. Plato wrote Republic, which is about examining different forms of government. It's also why the church has the Garden of Gethsemane stained glass while Clark is having his own Gethsemane moment. Because it's the one time in the Bible that Jesus shows that he has a choice of whether or not to go through with the plan.

@MetaCinemaYT20 күн бұрын
@@keefriff99 if you account for inflation, 873 million in 2016 is 1.1 billion in 2024. Just because it didn't clear a billion in the box office doesn't mean it flopped like some say. @keefriff9920 күн бұрын
@@MetaCinemaYT No of course not, but we’re talking Superman and Batman here. That’s more analogous to Civil War (which did almost $1.2 billion). Marvel took Iron Man alone and made the character iconic by casting RDJ and taking their time developing his character. @@keefriff99 I hope you realize how stupid WB was. The argument that "they weren't happy with the film's performance" is silly considering they're the ones that forced Snyder's hand in cutting extremely important scenes out of his films for the sake of run time. WB screwed themselves. While BvS was still extremely successful in the box office, nobody got the complete film until the Ultimate Edition released after it left theaters. The theatrical cut of the film was missing an entire 30 minutes of important plot that left the story a bit nonsensical at times. All in all, I disagree that Snyder was to blame for anything. Here's the thing you are voluntarily ignoring V. Zod was NOT WRONG. You instantly assumed Zod = evil so no matter what he says, to you he's lying. But he's NOT. Zod's perspective is exactly what happened. The Kryptonian council became self involved, decadent and degenerate. Their own flaws just KEPT getting bred INTO each new generation. That is why Jor El and his wife decided to have a NATURAL birth instead of letting society decide what their child WILL become. He REALLY ONLY wanted to preserve his people. However the failing of his motivations is the FAULT of Kryptonian society. Zod was BRED to be the way he is. He had NO CHOICE but to act the way he did. It was in his intentionally bred instincts and DNA.

The reason Mos fights look so realistic is because they follow 2 main principles. Inertia and 3rd law of motion. I *am* a fan of Superman; have been my whole life. Whether it's the Christopher Reeve movies or the cartoons or the live-action TV shows, I think he's a fantastic character, and this movie is my absolute favorite of them all. I'll never understand people who say that Superman isn't "angsty". Of course he is. In the Christopher Reeve movies, he struggles with his role on the Earth. In the DC animated universe, he gives his epic "world of cardboard" speech and is right on the edge of being a villain at times. Anyone who thinks that Henry Cavill's version is somehow "not like how Superman is" clearly don't know enough about Superman. I'm so glad you decided to watch this movie, and I hope you do continue to watch the rest of his adventures. Well, yes and no. Yeah, logically, Clark has a lot of baggage related to being the (almost) last representative of his species, a home and family he'll never really know, and living on a world where he has such incredible power he has to be extremely careful every single moment. But it's that he conquers all that to still believe in doing what he can to help out, to be a kind, gentle, uplifting beacon of hope that makes him really exceptional. This movie had a good balance of that, taking a realistic look at his internal struggles, but showing him choosing to embrace what Superman can represent. BvS really dialed up the angst, and since you can see the seeds of it planted here, makes this film feel bleaker by comparison. In short, yeah, Superman has angst, but generally chooses to rise above it.

AGREED.I saw this film at the cinema and was blown away how the show runners up date Superman for a modern audience. The original Superman film from 1978 is an out dated relic with corny and chessy dialog.Superman Returns is very bland and boring,I feel asleep at the movie theatre while watching it,I was snoring so loud some one woke me up and had to apologize for snoring. I was very embarassed. LOL.

You should definitely give Smallville a try. The origin story of Clark Kent(before Superman). Definitely my favorite comic book iteration. Truly gives us some of the best versions of characters in the whole history of the characters. Ten seasons over 200 episodes. Really absolutely worth the watch. It will make you laugh, cry, say “damn that was awesome”. The creators of the show just got widely recognized for creating the Wednesday show as well as writing the screenplay for the new beetlejuice movie. Always hold on to Smallville

In the tornado scene of this film Henry Cavill looked and acted exactly like Tom Welling did in Smallville! I'm pretty sure it was done like that on purpose, paying homage to Smallville
@Tigerdriver9918 күн бұрын
@ ha that scene always bothered me from this film. It’s like they didn’t understand how to write Johnathan Kent. Clark would have saved him & worry about his identity later. Like even the bus scene Clark was even like “what am I supposed to let them die..” Johnathan Kent is the reason why he is known as SUPERman.
@RaiderNic9921 күн бұрын
My biggest issue with this movie is how they killed Johnathan Kent. I get the angle that Snyder was going for I just think it's a weak way to do it. The more classic version of his death is much better in my opinion. In most iterations of Superman, his dad dies from a heart attack. Something that Clark, one of the strongest beings in the universe most of the time, is powerless to stop. I just feel like it teaches a more important lesson for Clark and has a heavier impact than letting his Dad die needlessly because they were trying to hide Clark's powers.
@keefriff9921 күн бұрын
It was done in a very ham-fisted way. There’s no way Clark would just stand there and watch his father die when he had the ability to save him, revealing his power or not.

@@keefriff99 I was about to say that. I hated that moment in this movie. It just took me right out of it. I can't imagine a person willing to watch their father die when they have the power to stop it, let alone with minimal risk to themselves, let alone while watching it happen in essentially slow motion (due to super speed) who would do that? And it didn't serve the plot...what did it show? That Clark is willing to sacrifice his father to save himself? That he trusts his father unquestioningly for no good reason? It's silly. From Johnathan's perspective it shows that Clark is his real son, because a real father would sacrifice himself for his son, sure...but that develops Johnathan's humanity at the expense of Clark's humanity. It was such a terrible scene it comes close to ruining the entire movie.

I remember going back to SUPERMAN RETURNS - At the time we were sad for not only the loss of Christopher Reeve but also somewhat lamenting the fact that we never got more movies or any kind of effort from the studios to puersue the franchise at the time. So when Brandon Routh took the part his was an uncanny alignment and brilliant in its own right. Henry Cavill however took the mantle on in a way which managed to break from the original nostalgia and take the character in on its own merit. His performance is brilliant and whilst I know it's always possible to replace actors in parts I also happen to believe that Henry was a definitive step and his portrayal will be missed. The two following movies with Henry do come recommended but make sure you catch the director's cuts of them both.

Superman returns is direct sequel to superman 2 donner's cut. Although Man Of Steel supposed to be soft remake of superman 2, it's stick to earth one comic where the tone of the earth one is sci-fi dark tone. Sadly most of people didn't know about earth one and they want WB to redo superman 2 lester's cut which is more closer to earth 2 fantasy genre with lighthearted tone. Sadly James gunn refused to do earth 2 and he already said he want to create his own universe similar to justice league unlimited cartoons. I blame studios execs, they never asked comic book writer about DC interpretation of this character but instead want to make it marvel 2.0 for DC and James gunn was hired for that purpose.

Zod didn't want Earth because its yellow sun would make Kryptonians strong. Can you imagine how difficult it would be to keep order (and Zod is a fascist, so he's _extremely_ concerned with keeping order) on a planet where everybody can fly, punch through walls and dodge weapons fire? Nah, Zod was going to take Earth because it just so happened to be a habitable planet and he needed one of those. Then Clark kept getting in his way and taking Earth became more about "punishing" Clark for that.

I hate the tornado death for Clark's father. The og heart attack death made more sense in showing that his powers can't control everything. The tornado death was a choice, he allowed his father to die.
@wal637720 күн бұрын
While I agree, I liked that it was Jonathan's choice, and it aligned with what he told Clark years ago regarding the school bus. While making Clark powerless to help his earth father's heart attack, I think it builds a different morality for Clark, that defines the mental discipline for him. That Jonathan had a belief and sacraficed himself for that belief.
@eatsmylifeYT20 күн бұрын
@@wal6377 It was useless sacrifice. He didn't have to die. He could have just joined Martha and Clark and the rest of the people and not tried to save the dog. I don't understand why everyone believes the heartattack death of Jonathan is better. It was done once. For the Reeve's universe. Every universe tries something new and people always try to find a way to bring it back to the original. Criticizing every little change of the movie that's different from the original that i could care less about now. In time, maybe a while in the future the Snyderverse, Ayerverse, and Bayverse will be inevitably sold to Universal. Profits are already showing and WBD is on the verge of selling. DCU may bring profits up for a while, but then head back to an extreme all time record low. The reboot was basically pointless.

Johnathan Kent's death in this film is a joke. The whole point of his death, which is usually a heart attack, is to have Clark realize that he cannot save everyone. "All those things I can do. All those powers. And I couldn't even save him" - Clark, "Superman: The Movie", 1978.

@LittleGalaxyBoy21 күн бұрын
@@PopsiCOLE He’s got a point. Personally, I prefer when they don’t kill off the Kents. Though the Kents do play a huge role in shaping what kind of Superman Clark Kent grows up to be. If both Kents die, Clark is more likely to become a moodier Superman. If he grows up in a world without other superheroes and one of the Kent's die protecting his secret, he’ll probably spend more time pushing away his powers and only become Superman later in life, shaped by his experiences with humanity, both good and bad. But if both Kents live, Clark is more likely to become a hopeful Superman, maybe even starting as Superboy in his teens before stepping into the role of Superman. I feel like this will be the key difference between Man of Steel (2013) and Superman (2025). This Superman saved Pa Kent from the Tornado thanks to existing in a world already filled with heroes so there was no reason for the Kents to push Clark to hide his powers. Would be a fun way to explain the reboot.
@christophermcbride252221 күн бұрын
@PopsiCOLE it's part of Superman's origin. Superman can save someone from a fall, a burning building, a car accident, etc. He cannot save someone from natural internal causes. All he can do is be there for them.
@PopsiCOLE21 күн бұрын
@LittleGalaxyBoy Yes, but it also makes sense in man of Steel. This is a realistic world with realistic consequences. Clark was already a good person. And father Kent in Man of Steel needed to show him how his actions have consequences throughout the world. And that the world was not ready to see that kind of power yet. And it definitely wasn't.
